Do they go to the salvage auctions or perhaps straight to a pick'n'pull yard? I'm looking for a clean front clip, and would like to get it before it's been pecked at by vultures.

Newer write offs go to auction and more often than not to the full serve wreckers to be taken apart by them and sold as individual parts.

The old write offs go to the self-serve places like Buck's.

All write-offs go to heaven.

Unless they're RHD.

the owner can choose where the cars go if there is no insurance claim. if there is a claim insurance companies will sell the writen off cars (either at auction or to private junkyards) to recoup some the cost to the insurance company. cars that don't sell at auction or that a junkyard doesn't want. may end up at bucks or pick-n-pull. as that buy cars for the weight of salvageable metal, or they just go straight to the car crusher again for the cost of salvageable metal.

So would I be able to have a dealer keep a look out for a certain type of car with a certain type of damage?

Most of the cars end up here, http://www.impactauto.ca/index.jsp?content=home

Before they are auctioned off.
