While walking my dogs last night around 9:30pm, I was pretty sure I saw a bat flying around in my area (Tuscany). Are they common in Calgary? I thought it was interesting.

I dont know if they are common, but growing up in Varsity I used to see them through the summer. (lived near the hill overlooking bowness)

I wouldn't say common, but I've seen one before. It was a few years ago when I was at Shaganappi golf course, one flew into the club house during the day. Maybe it was sick or lost because it was in broad day light

Yeah I was also working at Shaganappi last year when some researcher came in asking if they could camp out somewhere on the course to research the bats lol.

I found a bat clinging to the outside wall of the Science Theatres building at the university a couple years back. We contacted the bat specialist in the biology department and he said it was probably injured or sick. He said he was going to investigate, but we never heard back from him.

When I was working at a co-op in high school there were some bats living in the ceiling behind some fascia outside. Caught one with a doughnut tray; named him Batty... Yeah, I'm real creative with names.

I want a bat on a string. I think that'd be neat to take to Chinook Mall and scare the bejeezus out of everyone.

I used to see Fruit Bats all the time when I lived in Strathcona. Pretty common I would think.

you do NOT want a bat on a string!

I was fly fishing down by fernie a couple years ago, getting close to the end of summer, was starting to get pretty dusky.

Cast my line back and a fucking bat took my fly, and literally went fucking beserk.

started flying around in circles to the point where it wrapped my dad and I up in the line and was like flapping around my face and it took fucking forever to get untied.

no bats on strings.. no bats on strings.

Of course we have bats! You just don't see them as much due to the concrete jungle we live in...

Set up a bat house by your place and maybe you'll get lucky and get a couple to live by you. Sure does take care of mosquitos!

They're around. Had one in the house a long time ago when I was a kid. They're actually really good for mosquito control. I was thinking of making some bat houses to see if I could get more bats locating in my area.

Interesting. I was always under the impression that they enjoyed tropical climates more. In all these years this is the first time that I've actually seen one. Though I think we need more of them cause they don't seem to be helping with the mosquitoes... Luckily I think only the male mosquitoes are out so far, cause although they swarm, none have actually tried to attack me yet. I am shuddering at the thought of the bitey mosquitoes later in the summer.... :thumbsdow

Bats are fairly comong around here. They are a different breed than those found in more tripical climates.
The City of Airdrie put up some bat boxes by Nose Crek Park to keep the Mosquitoes under control. From what I remmeber, they did a great job.
I'm trying to find a good place at my new house to hang one. They require fairly specific living conditions.

You too huh?

that happened to me out by cochrane, but I managed to keep myself untangled and was able to just cut my line.

hmm, a bit off topic, but does anyone have a batbox? I'm wondering how effective they are relative to those propane powered mosquito things. Also, is this one of those, "if you build it they will come" things or do you have to do anything extra to get some bats around?

Nothing like having a bat TIED to your body. Nothing could *possibly* go wrong there...

I have 3 bats living in my shed. Its an old shit shed I never use to I let them be. It keep the bugs away great. But make sure you tell your company you got bats before they notice them. Had a lot of loud screams in my yard lol. Usually the bats just do circles around the back yard. Keep out of the way when visiting
