Your lucky it's not a late model SAAB. Would have been a 4k+ mistake... :P
Be aware that if you buy a key off ebay you will still have to have the key lazer cut by the dealer, and programed. I would not let them charge you more than .5hr to program a key. Also request that they remove all old keys from the theft system, you never know who will find your key!

Bugatti Veyron's key is cut from an actual jewler, costs upwards of 4 thousand so get one cut.
=D
But i guess if you can afford a veyron, your good to get as many as you want cut.

just a quick note. dealers will not cut or program ebay or aftermarket keys.

and since when is a customer allowed to dictate how long it takes to do a job? do you actually know what programming entails or is it just a guesstimate?

i worked for a dealer and yes i did cut aftermarket keys...(gold plated keys.... bling bling!!)

In my time working for Saturn/SAAB i would estimate a key program to take from 15 seconds to 3 minutes, however most dealers will charge a nice flat half hour(or free if your good to your advisor). Unless there is no key code available (insurance rekey) you would be a fool to pay anything more.

VAG products can no longer have their keys programmed by mere mortals. They have to use a machine that communicates with Wolfsburg over a secure connection, and then unlocks the Immo so they can get in. Although, if you still had the Secret Key Code or SKC (it's on a black scratch off tag that came with the car...) you could find someone with a VAG-COM and do it yourself. I think they stopped sending SKC's out with their cars around 2004.

Can someone explain to me what this key is and why it's so expensive? Is it just for the ignition?

It's the chip in the key, most if not all car keys will cost upwards of $100 these days. I lost one to my Nissan a few years back and it cost me almost $200 to replace

Why does a RFID transmitter cost so much? Isn't it just sending an encrypted code? You can buy transmitters and sending/receiver units from any electronics store for 1/10 of that price.

Program the FOB yourself?? Google worked for me:
http://www.techwatch.co.uk/forums/10159-vw-remote-key-fob-programming-guide.html
http://www.volkswagenforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=24223
http://www.programyourkeys.com/Program_Keys_-_VW_Audi_Seat_Skoda.html
So at least that's half the work.

Well maybe because HE DOESN'T HAVE A WORKING KEY

Straight from your links:

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

How to program your key fob.
Put one key into the ignition and turn it on. Don't start car.

VW/AUDI/SEAT/SKODA

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

Plus, this requires that he actually has a cut key for his car to match to it, obviously this process won't cut the key for him.
