View Full Version : iphone 3gs release

Work is gonna lick balls tomorrow. I don't get all the hype for this phone AGAIN! There's few added features and larger memory. Woo-hoo.
Seriously the phone is gonna be available next week and the week after etc is it really necessary to line up at 730 in the morning tomorrow?

Anyways for you fido people that plan on waiting in line tomorrow here's a few things you need to know.
If using your fido dollars to purchase the phone you have to add on a 3 year data plan if you don't have one already. If you don't want data you have to purchase the phone at regular price. 599, 699 or 799.
New activations are only available on 3 year data again if you do not want data have to purchase at regular price.
6gb is available for 30 bucks only on a 3 year data plan.
For those of you who don't know there are ecfs on data plans seperate from voice plan ecfs.

The apple store will also be selling the iphone so you can go line up there to. They will activate it on the spot with either Rogers or fido. Those phones are NOT unlocked. So don't get it twisted.

Let's see what happens this year I wonder if Rogers fido and apple have beefed up their systems this time around. Last year the Rogers and fido sales network crashed. Itunes also crashed last year.
It took 30 to 40min to complete an activation which really should only take 8-10 min if the customer already knows in advanced what they want.

Stupid iphone.

I called the Rogers store on Country Hills Blvd, and he told me that iPhone 3G s will NOT be available without a contract. He said that the cost of the unit had been raised to $3100 in his computer (I found it odd he would mention that)

And all mention of a no-contract price seems to have been removed from the Rogers site.

*EDIT* Looks like the no-contract pricing is back.

I'm going to get one but if there's gonna be a line up then I'm gonna wait it out.

I agree though, lining up for this simple shit when you could just as easily get it next week is stupid. Some people just follow Apple like sheep and buy whatever they come out with.

Having said that, I don't think this year's lineup's will be as bad as last year since last year was the first release in Canada.

Is futureshop authorized to sell without a contract? I have called a couple of places today, and none of them are authorized to sell without a contract.

I have the White 16 gig 3G.. The 3.0 is great. No need for me to upgrade to 3G S. I will wait till Apple does a new design of this phone before i buy one.

There are couple phones i might try. The Nokia N97 and the Samsung Omnia HD...

cheers,

Has it been confirmed that you can not buy this phone without a contract from Rogers or the apple store?

Mr. Burns
06-19-2009, 09:53 AM
A friend of mine who works at a Rogers store said that his store has not been authorized to sell without a contract.

I also phone Cellcom Wireless downtown and the woman said they aren't authorized to see non-contract unitl next week.

most retail locations won't sell without a contract because the cost of the iphone is 693 and we have to sell it for 699, and when you factor in shipping and processing its not worth it at all.

rogers plus are corporate stores and are forced to sell it outright, and of course the apple store can sell it outright.

its really not a question of being authorized, its purely they don't want to lose money.

also, buying outright at this point may not be your best option if you're an existing iphone customer with a contract. if you've had it for at least 6 months you're going to get an early upgrade discount of 250 bucks! so just make sure you get yourself the best deal!

Syncing my 3GS right now....love the camera and video improvement, compass is cool, haven't played much yet...

I was at a store that just opened at 9am here in Van, but I was second in line. They only had one 32gb 3gS in black that the lady in front of me took, so I busted it up the street to the rogers video and was first in line.....there were about 30 people in line when I left...took me an hour to sign up with phone lines being congested...

Sweet phone. Need a case now.

yep thats the other renewal, if you got your iphone july - sept of 08 then you're getting it for the 199 or 299. that also means you've had a bill of at least 100 bucks a month

if you got it at least 6 months ago, you are still getting a discount, but only the 250 bucks

if you got one within the past 6 months you're out of luck

Thats lucky, since they should have had to deal with all the same stuff we did. Some random ones were going through without issues though. New activations were pretty painless, just the hardware upgrades were being bad for us.

Most stores did not get that much stock, usually 1-2 32gb and then 4-6 16gb phones. Obviously this isn't the case for all stores, but this seems pretty common based on the info I've read and heard about first hand from a Rogers Plus store.

Agreed, the best bit here is that the 8GB is down to $99 now.. the 3GS isn't really anything special, its a shame they didn't come out with something a bit more innovative.

ZorroAMG
06-22-2009, 12:14 PM
I dunno, the camera with touch focus and video is great, the 32gb is nice and the 3GS is noticeably faster than the 3G.

I was also coming from a 2.5G, so this was a worthwhile upgrade...

Like what? The iPhone is already arguably the most innovative phone out there; you can't expect Apple to change the game every year.

Well the phone is subsidized to you until your contract is up, so I'm sure they could come up with something. I've never actually read my whole contract though. I'm just pretty surprised rogers is doing this, there usually pretty big dbags until you threaten to cancel.

For a casual user though, would that much speed make a difference to upgrade?

Also how is the video quality on the new 3GS?

My wife took my 16gig iphone. I am looking to get something else, so i don't know what to get yet. I was looking at the samsung omni HD and nokia n97. If apple would have changed the design on the iphone i would have prob. got one. Going to wait till next year to see what apple does next with this phone..

What do you mean a casual user?

If you text and call people, these apps will open twice as fast.

Look at speed demo's. Day to day "casual" use will see the speed increase.

Yes, it may only be 200MHZ faster on paper, but the actual processor is said to perform around 1100MHZ.

Look at the PRE. It beats that out in every test, yet the pre's clock speed is 800.

Don't even bother with the omni or n97. Seriously people need to understand that iPhone is seriously way ahead of every other touch screen phone out there and it's not just hype and popularity that makes it good. Especially now with 3GS, just cause it doesn't have a redesign doesn't mean its not worth it. Only alternative to the iphone that I would look into would be the G1 google phone. Anything with Windows Mobile, Nokia interface, Sony whatever is garbage.

I can guarantee anyone switching from iphone to any other touch screen, will be hugely disappointed.

http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTE2OTU

iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and connect to iTunes 8.2 to complete activation.

I picked up a 32g GS, no more waiting on hacks to upgrade firmware.

Was waiting on HK (which also sells 'em unlocked starting late July), but found out Australia and Italy has 'em already.

If it's on order through rogers just go to the apple store tell them to give you one, they will call into rogers confirm that you're on the waiting list, then they will cancel your order with rogers and hand you one. You can either pay for the phone on the spot or wait for it to show up on your rogers bill.

Yeah, you can do this for Fido also, you can even use your Fido Dollars in the store, they have a system there called Fido Sales Central, they just enter the system, and enter ur Fido Dollars and voila, walk out without paying a thing...but on a sidenote, I've never been to a Apple store before and WTF, you have to make an appointment to buy stuff? :nut: :dunno:

I just walked in and talked to the guy there who put me on a list and said wait 20 minutes, ended up waiting about 5 before someone helped me out. Don't think it's absolutely necessary to make an appointment before hand unless the place is crazy busy.

Best thing to do is on the first charge let it drain all the way. You can still do it but won't have the same effect. But yah let the battery drain until its almost dead like 5% then charge it up full.

I found out that charging through usb takes alot longer then plugging the thing into the wall. Took me almost 6 hours to get it from 8%-90%. Plugged it into the wall and took about 25 minutes to do the other 10%. Next day did a charge from 34% to full by wall plug and it took 2 hours.

I've noticed the battery meter is different now. Back then, it would be 1/2 gone before the meter even moved. Now it moves right away. At the end of a full day, I'm down to 70% battery with the gauge showing only 2/3. Before I'd always be showing full everynight (even tho it wasn't really full).

I'm gonna not charge it today and see how it lasts. Based on my usual usage, I can go 2 full days before I really need to charge it.

My problem with yellowsn0w on the 3g (pre 3.0) was that the baseband was one version older, and when using some foreign SIM cards the phone would get stuck in no service mode until I reboot it 20 times. These are known issues with the hacked software unlock that I just couldn't live with. That and I had to wait for a hack before I could upgrade the firmware.

Just not worth the hassle.

Doesn't your usual usage include plugging it into your car to listen to music which charges it? If not, 2 days is pretty good battery life considering how much you use it.

I picked up a 32g GS, no more waiting on hacks to upgrade firmware.

Was waiting on HK (which also sells 'em unlocked starting late July), but found out Australia and Italy has 'em already.

Hey rage, how did u get it? can you get it shipped to Canada through the site?

No, you have to know someone locally in HK or Australia, or get it through ebay.

Picked mine up at the Apple store in Calgary when I went to go get my TV. Way quicker then going through Rogers. Thing is damn fast!
