i'm looking to get a turn-by-turn GPS for my car. what do you guys recommend? It would be nice to get something where I didn't have to pay to update the maps, if you know what I mean. :D

HP Ipaq series does not charge for maps

The nicest interface I found, as opposed to the welfare looking Garmins

I also don't see how the HP is better. I find that Garmin is the leader in GPS from functionality to overall design. I posted a poll a while back and Garmin was the clear winner. I have the 265WT which incidentally happens to be $80 off at Future shop.

yea, my boss had a garmin and i was really impressed. any particular models that you guys suggest? also, where is the cheapest place to buy them. they have several refurbished garmin models at tigerdirect.ca

EDIT: oh, i also want something that I can plug into my cig lighter. the cheapest garmin on tigerdirect seems to have only batteries (??)

Make sure its compatible with europes "GPS" System. the U.S' satellites are getting old and are starting to fail/fall. they won't be replaced for a while.

Get a nuvi 250. It's perfect for basic use and it has the text-to-speech function.

garmin all the way, heck if our whole fleet 13 aircraft use them, why not use it in a car.

Another for Garmin. Best mapping out there.

I wish they'd release an iPhone app like tom tom is :( I never remember to charge my nuvi anymore and I think cigarette chargers look ghetto.

Garmin coming out with a phone to compete with Apple...which no one will buy, like the Pre and Storm lol. Then 2 years from now they will give up and make an app...that's my guess.

A guy here at work as an Omnitech he bought at Staples which works great. It lets you run any .exe file you want from a flash drive so he loaded virtual XP, Garmin, TomTom, NavGo, Destinator and iGo to check out all the different mapping applications, he loaded them all on at the same time. He said Garmin was the worst interface out of all of them and he now solely uses iGo because he likes it the most. He said it was on clearance for $90 and with coupons he picked it up for $60 but they're apparently all sold out now so the if you find one it's likely a return.

LOL....for something to get me where I need to go, I choose mapping over pretty UI. Vista? lol

my old roommate had a Garmin, or the one that starts with an "M" ..magellen or something??

anyways, if she typed in "ST" instead of "STREET" or "DR" instead of "DRIVE"
it would actually verbally say "saint" and "doctor", respectively lol

what the hell?! she told me, i didn't believe her and sure enough, it says "turn left on blahblah doctor, merge onto blahblah saint" lol..so dumb!

My old Garmin from 2006 does something similar. It spells things out correctly but it pronounces DR as DOCTOR and TR as TRACK. It gets ST correct though.

GARMIN...I have the 760 for about 1.5 years now and it has been great. It has an SD card slot and an FM transmitter so you can have some good music on a long road trip...

Also, with the Garmin, its directions are so that the place you want to go is 99.9% on the right handside, that way you don't need to do a u-turn. I don't know if any other GPS does this but I found it to be a very useful feature...
