View Full Version : Terence's 2004 Honda S2000 Project Thread

Prelude:
Welcome to my S2000 build/project thread! As an automotive enthusiast and beyond.ca member for the last few years, I thought it would be worthwhile to share my experience with you all. Included in the post(s) are pictures and commentary to supplement every stage of the build. I will try my best to keep things engaging and colourful and portray my passion for automotive enthusiasm with...enthusiasm! Another reason I am posting this thread, is because I believe that sharing your passion with the automotive enthusiast community is how the scene stays strong and grows. I hope you enjoy!

How It Started:

http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/8859/stock.jpg
I actually wanted a white s2000. Yellow was my second choice.

This is where the story began. I purchased this 2004 Rio Yellow Honda S2000 from an owner in Edmonton (I live in Calgary). The transaction went very well in spite of the fact that I had never actually met the owner face-to-face and did not actually see the vehicle until purchased. Long story told short: the car was well priced (originally a US car), had no problems (was fully inspected) and was in minty condition (completely stock) as the above picture might indicate. It was essentially, delivered right to my door a good week or two before our first snowfall in late 2008. Not a bad start, other than the fact that it would be a garage queen right away. I did manage to get a few days of driving in before storing it for the winter, though.

The reason I chose an AP2 over an AP1 (wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S2000) to differences) is due to a number of factors. The AP2 is a newer car, and that naturally attracted me to getting an AP2. Also, it wasn’t too difficult finding a 2004/2005 AP2 within my budget. Upon doing (a lot of) research, I concluded that the AP2 is the more street-able of the two cars and is more updated aesthetically and functionally. A lot of s2000 enthusiasts claim that the AP1 is more raw of a car than the AP2. At the end of the day, both are essentially the same vehicle with a couple major and few minor differences that will have its supporters for each. I clearly am an AP2 supporter when given the choice (which I was), but certainly wouldn’t have minded a 9000 rpm redline. Oh well, can’t have it all! Before I get carried away and start to write a car review, I will stop here – I’m not trying to convince anyone that they should get an s2000. (It’s no RARRI but it’s an amazing car, by the way).

Past to Present:
There was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to modify certain elements of the car to my liking. Before I even got the car, I concocted a philosophy that would be the layout for my build. I’ve gone through a few Hondas since the time I started driving. Car enthusiasm was always something that was a part of me, but maturity...maybe not present at all times. All my cars went through a cycle which reflected my tuner-intelligence and budget at the time. Suffice to say that there a few things I did to my previous cars that I regret doing, but I do my best to treat it as a learning and growing experience.

http://www.matt-d.com/ghetto/spoiler.jpeg
Ok, not that bad...but it was getting there.

I would expect this s2000 project to provide me with the same type of experience when I look back at what I have accomplished/failed in a few years and move on to a new project. This is my philosophy – to always keep learning, and to express the depth of my experiences through my project. Like the car, my philosophy may be modified over time as a result of the aforementioned on-going experiences and whatever journey that I may take.

Form and Function:
A focal point of my philosophy is balance. The balance of the basic elements of a car – form and function – is what I am striving to achieve. So much so that it is essentially status quo, in stock relativity. I desired quality over quantity. I desired OEM characteristics over aftermarket characteristics. All of this was to be achieved (no “ifs”, “ands” or “buts”) within a reasonable, and often stingy budget.
Embedded below is a video which depicts my feelings and philosophies in the direction I am taking my project. It’s a very long, but good video. I wanted to share it, as I’m sure many of you will enjoy it.

Thanks to civicsi for the link (http://blip.tv/file/464022).

Now, if you remember to come back to reading my thread (or haven’t been scared away by the wall of text)...welcome back!
Some of the points emphasized by the tuners in the video were "expression" and "lifestyle". While I am not nearly as hardcore or enthusiastic as most of these guys (I don’t think), I am an advocate of expressing one's personality through their car (and all facets of life). With that being said, I had an image in mind and my project has meticulously followed this image. My inspiration is below.

http://www.autocult.com.au/img/gallery/full/AkinaGhost961.jpg
Mugen, or as civicsi likes to say "Wugen", s2000

Skyline_Addict
06-25-2009, 01:18 AM
Form:
I am not looking to clone the Mugen S2000 right down to the reservoir sock. However, the Mugen S2000 is of great inspiration when it comes to how I want my car to look (and to some sense, function). If you were to take a look at famous tuner cars, such as J’s Racing S2000, Amuse S2000 and even Spoon S2000, these cars look like full-out race cars (which they in all respects, are). What I personally like about the Mugen S2000 is that it looks like and definitely passes as a street car (“My Dad would drive this”, says EK 2.0). My own take on it is that it looks like a car that you could buy straight from the Honda dealership with some added “dealer options” and features. That’s exactly the route I wanted to go.

http://www.bespokeventures.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/js3-copy.jpg
I've always liked the J's car. Imagine driving something like that on the street *cough* Jackie *cough*.

There are barely any Mugen parts on my car as per this post, but I reiterate that my philosophy is not to clone the Mugen S2000 but to follow it’s Form/Function principles. While I do plan to add more Mugen parts (particularly the exterior) no one should be expecting extravagant GT Wings, wide-body kits with super low offset wheels, tow hooks or gutted exteriors. Don’t get me wrong, those cars look incredible and I appreciate all of the aforementioned items for what they are. However they don’t fall into the criteria in keeping my car street-able and OEM-ish inside and out. Below is tidbit of what has been added (work-in-progress) to Mugenize the s2000.

http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/424/3516839824b183488060.jpg
Clearly, a downforce machine.

Skyline_Addict
06-25-2009, 01:29 AM
Function:
Abiding by my current tuning philosophy, functional or “go” modifications followed the same route as Form – quantitatively few and OEM spec (as much as possible). Wider, lighter and stronger wheels replaced the stock 17” wheels and followed the OEM geometry settings. Slightly wider tires accompanied the new wheels, also following OEM geometry settings.

http://www.koene.com/images/Bridgestone%20logo2.jpghttp://daliracing.com/v666-5/catalog/x-images/volk_centercap_ce28n_im.jpg
Hints...

An exceptional street-able coilover system was installed to compliment the new wheels/tires to formulate a daily-driveable-weekend-racer s2000. The suspension settings were also such that ride quality was similar (but slightly harsher) to OEM with ride height lowered by about 2” all around to lower the center of gravity and provide a more aggressive appearance (1 finger gap between fender, front and back). As you can tell I am quite sceptical on compromising OEM characteristics, but I do feel that the front suspension settings will have to be adjusted firmer as I am having my front wheels rub against the fender during hard cornering. Fenders may also need to be rolled, which by doing so early, might make things easier in the future (hint?).

http://www.j-specperf.ch/images/sideboxes/buddy_club.jpg
Another hint...

The only mechanical modification added so far is a full dual exhaust system from one on my favourite tuning companies. I like this exhaust system so much, that I have it on both my cars (the other one is my daily driver/winter car...aka Honda Fit). The reason for getting the dual system was to maintain OEM Form (the rear bumper is designed to house dual exhaust outlets) and because it is an extremely rare modification that I have not seen anyone else do (I’ve checked all the s2000 forums!). While I strongly emphasize streetability in my philosophy, the exhaust is rather obnoxious sounding (in a good way). What I really love about the exhaust system is that it looks very stock – I was very surprised how well the AP2 rear bumper housed the outlets. The system also has documented power gains.

http://www.tntperformance.co.nz/images/-//Spoon/S2KAERO-06.jpg
I have plans to compliment the exhaust system with other parts from same tuning company.

The Result:
Below is the product of all my thoughts, philosophies and work (most of the hard work was done by others, lol) over the last few months. Most of you have probably scrolled down within a few seconds of clicking on this thread and have already seen what is to follow. Some of you may have read every single word and have things you may agree/disagree with. At the end of the day, the whole purpose of this thread is to share with my fellow enthusiasts – each of whom will enjoy/dislike it in their own way. That’s what makes every enthusiast different and that’s what makes every enthusiast’s car different.

riced and EK 2.0 are to thank for these beautiful photographs. We went out on a hot summer evening to get the shots done. These two gentlemen (along with Dj_Stylz and JKL@STRD who tagged along) completely exceeded my expectations as to what I had in mind when I had asked for a photoshoot (which I intended to use pictures from for this thread). Their enthusiasm was off-the-charts, and we visited some unique (and very secret!) locations. Most importantly, as friends and automotive enthusiasts, we had a shit-tonne of fun. Spending the evening with these guys reminded me why I love cars so much. So...............before this gets a bit on the gay side, here are the pictures!

Yes. The fact that particular s2000 was also yellow did add some justification, but the end result would have been the same regardless of color.

in-line with my philosophy for this car, power adders are at the bottom of the priority list..and even then, won't be anything crazy. just going to top it off with intake and header and stop there. similar to the touge s2000s.

Terence's S2000, 2010 version 2.

The 2010 season has finally rolled along after a number of (predictable?) April/May snow storms and the S2000 is now ready to hit both street and track once again. Keeping a certain vision in mind and much planning and research over the winter months, the car has undergone some changes from last year's setup. The philosophy was to continue building a street-able car, but with more aspirations towards track capabilities. The result is essentially drawn from inspiration and specifications of the touge-tuned BMI S2000s, all of which do not cross a defined threshold as far as sacrificing street-ability is concerned. I'd like to say that my build borrows one or two elements from each of my favorite s2000s seen on BMI.

The Buddyclub N+ dampers were swapped for a more formidable HKS Hipermax Sport III coilover which is matted to a new non-staggered wheel/tire setup. This setup has had rave reviews for those who use the aforementioned wheel/tire setup, matched with high performance street tires and a stock (or relatively stock) engine and basic track-aspired aero. The F 13k / R 11k spring rates help tame the car with its new front grip and braking bias, which would otherwise be very twitchy under stock conditions. What I really liked about this suspension is that it comes pre-dialed with the HKS's recommended settings out of the box - this is currently the benchmark setup the car sits on, and any changes will only be made if tangibly warranted. A Spoon front x-brace and rear beam bar contribute to increasing body rigidity. As of 3 track events done this season, softening the settings a little seems necessary when at Race City. Due to the stiffness, I didn't feel that I could push the car hard enough or take proper lines over the uneven surfaces of highly transitional turns (such as the Esses and Chicane). However, the current suspension setup should do relatively better with the current alignment settings for upcoming Auto-X events I am attending. J's Racing roll center adjusters have been recommended by Paul @ Speedtech to address the height drop and deflection.

Braking:
As all OEM rotors required replacing, Powerslot slotted rotors were installed. In addition, Spoon brake lines and 4-pot monoblock calipers were used to upgrade the OEM equipment to compliment a fresh set of Hawk HP+ brake pads. The result is a braking setup which works with OEM-size pads, and provides better braking modulation, a stronger "initial-bite" and less susceptibility to brake fade during longer, hotter days at the track. Braking continues to be a strong point of the car, and instills confidence in its reliability.

Tires + Wheels:
To match with the new suspension geometry and braking setup, I will be trying out a variety of high performance street tires which include the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 and Dunlop Direzza Z-star Specs in a 255/40/17 size on all 4 corners. These tires will be mounted onto Volk Racing RE30s, 17x9 +54 on all 4 corners. The result is smoother inputs, more balanced cornering abilities and higher turn-in speeds compared to the staggered setup I ran last year which was susceptible to a fair bit of understeer. Currently on the car are a brand new set of Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, which provides predictable handling responsiveness under hard driving, and are a perfect match for the suspension and braking capabilities of the s2000.

Aero + Body:
Aero becomes increasingly important as the focus of my tuning begins to steer more aggressively towards the achievement of faster lap times and satisfactory responses to driver input. The addition of a GT wing by Voltex/J's Racing provides much needed down-force to the rear wheels to a now relatively front-grip-biased setup. The wing is mounted to a Seibon Carbon Fibre Trunk Lid which compliments a J's Racing Type-V CFRP/FRP Front Hood to provide roughly equal weight reduction in the front and back and some engine ventilation. Currently, the OEM AP2 front lip acts as front splitter, with an APR front air dam soon to go on as its intended replacement. To finally complete the aero setup, I am hoping at some point get my hands on an authentic Mugen hardtop. Due to some minor cosmetic damage sustained from a spin-out (caused by hydroplaning out of the chicane on Falken Azenis RT615s), new Seibon wide carbon fenders (which I'm not planning to paint) and a new driver-side door-skin are in order, once racing season comes to an end. The wide carbon fenders are a much welcome item, as I still have some tire rubbing issues with the stock fenders (I did not have this problem with the RT615s but do with the RE-11 and their much fatter sidewall). A fresh paint-job for non-carbon pieces should be in store for the beginning of next season.

Engine + Power Adders:
Things remain practically stock in this regard, with the Spoon N1 Dual exhaust system still being the only bolt-on. The exhaust system has undergone a custom overhaul, and has been re-welded with 80mm piping c/o Paul @ Speedtech, after it sustained some damage from the aforementioned spin out. On side with keeping my tuning philosophy to mimic the touge-tuned cars, there will be no plans to install any significant power adders. J's Racing headers and intake may be added in the future to provide some gains and better throttle response, but the car is and will always remain NA and relatively stock. Many of the tuner cars which I aspire to opt for a torque-ier 2.2L strokered engine (F20c), which I technically already have thanks to my F22c. Some distant thoughts have been given to modifying the final gear to provide better acceleration and K-Pro is not out of the question, but will always be a last consideration. Paul @ Speedtech has also recommended a carbon driveshaft for more responsiveness. The practically stock setup provides a no frills, equally reliable engine on both track and street that has never presented any issues - and above all, I find that very endearing.

Interior:
Still in the car from last year is a Bride Vios Lowmax seat for the driver to provide much needed and better bolstering and a Spoon Recliner seat for the passenger. Both seats sit on Bride FO rails. A T1R Ti shift knob also remains intact, while providing a better and more prompt shifting feel. The rest of the interior remains stock, as there are no intentions whatsoever to gut the interior as a means of weight reduction. Though they are modified with the intention of reaching the finish line faster, a goal of a touge car's tuning setup is to keep the car street-able at all costs with fully intact interiors. A T1R suede shift boot with red stitching has been acquired but I've been too lazy to put it in.

Comments:
It's been quite the journey with this car over the last couple of years, and the community has been especially helpful in encouraging me to build the car that I want. I would not have been in this position without their help, and I feel it is important to thank them. Whether it be providing educated advice, lessons on philosophies or great deals on parts, new or used (especially used, half the parts on my car are used :)), it seemed like there was always someone to offer a hand. I am almost done modifying the car as I have always approached this build with "do-it-right-the-first-time" in mind, and my checklist of parts is nearly complete - a thought I share with some fellow tuners. I felt that by having this approach, I've been very cost effective with the build, operated on a reasonable budget and have never done anything out of impulse. So far I've enjoyed every moment of this build, both good times and not so good times. It certainly has been a great learning experience and I look forward to enjoying the car going forward and hopefully sharing my experiences with newer tuners/s2000 owners.

Special Thanks:
Terry, Paul, Will, Jackie and co. @ STRD
Fellow local s2000 owners (shadowz, shox, snow_daniel, fadi, jamie and co.)
illmotion, who are always supportive and enthusiastic with the car
and everyone who has lent a helping hand along the way, in any shape or form!
