Did anyone catch the discovery channel tonight (June 29th) around 6:00... They were showing this guy who built a supercar completely out of wood. There were the obvious parts that needed to be metal (suspension, engine) but the wheels were wooden (the center parts) and the steering, the complete body, all out of wood.

The engine is a north star V8 with custom intake manifolds with a roots supercharger on each bank. The car is only 2,500lbs.. and I thought I heard something about 800hp? could be wrong but being a twin supercharged North Star, I am guessing in around 500+ atleast...

here are a few links with more info on it

Sweet! I've seen it on TV couple months ago - at this time it wasn't even finished. One thing about this car - it will never rust for sure.

The Splinter. I have known about this for the good part of a year now. I have even conversed with the guy who was building it. LOTS of work went into that car. Lots of design that had to be modified to make things work.

Yeah, this was posted almost a year ago, even that OP said it was old.

Looks like this one is finished though, pretty cool.

what about wood rust? And what if the engine over heats, wouldn't that burn the whole car?

Oh wow! What a major design flaw, you're right I can't believe they overlooked that. You should email them ASAP and tell them that wood rots over time, and making a vehicle out of a material that chemically transforms and weakens over time and exposure to the elements is unsafe and unconscionable.

I think it's pretty cool. Obviously not something that will ever hit the mass market but a neat project for sure.

Pretty cool but Morgan in Britain has been making a wood framed car for years. They even race them at Le mans.
