So I'm going on a long highway trip this weekend, so I decide to finally pick up a Escort 8500. I have a Whistler back home, which is a pretty cheap unit so I don't even bother using it anymore. Now I sold these units for years working in Mobile Electronic sales, friends had them back home and they raved about them.

Ok so I pick one up, a 8500 X50 that is, for 400 bones today. Now pretty much EVERYDAY by my house a cop in a white ghost car sets himself up at 4 locations throughout the day. So I hit up the first one, not there, i head to his 2nd hideout and luckily enough i catch him just stopping to setup his sniper location. I drive off and come back 5 minutes later after he has setup. I can see him poking out the side of a sign down the road. Maybe 100 metres away, getting closer, there's a couple cars that were up ahead of me a good distance, then my turn, i know he's shooting right at my car, BUT the 8500 fails to read ANYTHING the whole time. The K band still goes off near automatic doors and stuff. Maybe the laser detection is busted, i'm not sure. The only thing it doesn't pick up is KU band, but that's oldschool and I don't think they use that here.

How do you know he isn't just aiming at your car and then doing an instant on? No detector can detect an instant on laser...

Alright I'm gonna say it, maybe stop speeding? You could have saved yourself $400 to use towards something else.

Yes I'm a beyond angel, LOL. I can almost always say that I do follow the speed limit... for the most part. Yes there will be the odd speeding here and there but I know the risks so if I get caught, to bad for me if that happens. But it will almost never happen.

But going back to the thread. Stop speeding and return the 8500 to get your money back. These things are garbage unless you buy the really high end stuff which is still a shit load of money anyways.

Your escort is obviously not working properly. I'll take it off your hands. Seriously.

I think you're right in that KU band isn't used over here, so I doubt that's it.

Do you have city/highway mode? City mode on my Beltronics mutes out X band.. I haven't actually seen a cop use Xband but maybe some still do?

What it most likely is, is Laser, which is iffy to detect.

You can improve detection by proper mounting in your car, keep it below the AS-1 line (tinted line on your windshield). Many types of window tinting will actually screw with detectors, sat radios and GPS because of the metallic content in the tint for heat reflection.

Where's it mounted? If it's high on the windshield then it's never gonna pick up laser. Even if it's low, if the cop zaps low then it may not go off.
Either way, getting a radar detector to save yourself from laser is like getting a jock for a gun fight.

It's mounted as low as I can on the windshield, without the wipers getting in the way. Friend's who use a V1 are able to pick up laser all the time. The 8500 is suppose to be very good at picking up laser as well. But then again i'm using it for highway driving, and they tend to use radar a lot more on highways vs laser.

And wow, it's odd to see preachers on speeding especially in Calgary. Although I've never received a speeding ticket once the last 6 years i've been driving.

If the cop was using laser then the 8500 most likely wont pick it up. I have a 8500 and it's basically useless for cops in town because i've never had it pick up laser.

It works fantastic on the highway where the RCMP uses radar but as for in the city goes, i dont even bother using it.

The officer will normally aim at your headlights which, if youre close enough to the officer, wont allow the lidar beam to spread out enough to be detected on your dash-mounted unit - especially if there are cars ahead of you.

Try different mounting locations, ie. middle of the windscreen, off to one side etc.

I've had cheapo units pickup lidar when driving down the highway where the cops are setup 500m down the road. The lidar beam will have spread out at that point enough to be detected.

I have the escort 8500 x50 blue.

For 100% the escort will pick up laser.

I have a laser gun if you would like you could come here and I'll test your escort.

The detector will only go off if hes directing the beam at you and hits you.

Most cops setup are now laser.
