I figured it was time I got one of these, so just wondering what's the cheapest I could hope to buy one for (yet still be something that's hopefully half decent)

Why buy the cheapest when you will be plagued by slow load times and shitty firmwares?

Just buy a ps3, it's the best player on the market.

Supposedly Zellers has $100 Sony players but I haven't checked myself. Great price.

I don't think this is the case anymore. There are standalone blu ray players that are as good as the PS3 and cheaper.

can't you update the firmware on the blu ray for the ps3?

yeah, and I mean I don't really have time for gamin anymore so it'd be kinda useless I think to buy a PS3 JUST for the bluray no?

The gaming option is just a bonus.

I know a guy at work who just last month bought a Blu-Ray player and didn't think he could go wrong. All to discover it takes 3 mins to load a movie once you insert the disc because it all runs in Java language. He was not impressed, I've never heard of his blu-ray player since. I've also read that unless you hack it, it can't actually playback full 1080p signal. There's a slim PS3 on the way, wait for it, or go buy a PS3. Or watch DVD's lol.

I wouldn't say it's a waste. It's a nice bonus in case you ever change your mind. Most stand alone players are still 250-300+.

You've got to be kidding me. Your post is probably the worst information I have ever read on the subject.

The newer blu ray players are nothing like this. Your friend bought a shitty one. And LOL at the 1080p BS.

Would you be able to list a couple for me? We've been thinking about switching over to blu-ray...

Just buy an internal BD-ROM for your computer, most people have their computers hooked to their television anyway. They go for about $150 or less and they're DVD burners as well.
