I have made wine with my parents before, the best place I know of is in the plaza by Dalhousie LRT station, across from bugaboo's (not the side w/ safeway). Its ran by a couple old guys who really know there stuff.

Personally I'm going to be making some mead in about a month and a half.

Wine is good, but beer ain't worth the time and cost. You need some good equipment to get even close to store bought beer.

what about those starter kits that come with everything? those wouldn't be bad for a quick batch would they?

It will take you years to screw around with beer.
Stay with wine.

It's all about the yeast.
Praire brewers had a nice Indian Pale Ale Kit.

And the hops,i still have them growing around my fence if you want some let me know.
