Well to me this is big at least since I've been messing around with landscapes for a long time now (around 7 or 8 years). I've recently sold six copies of this photo in 17"x24" format. I had also sold it to a company in maui that wanted to use it for promotional purposes!!! What's funny is the amount of time and money I've invested into photography and I think more than anything else to me this is just huge!

The photo was taken at 4:25 AM at the very top of Mount Haelekala in Maui, Hawaii. This photo itself has been merged together using 14 different exposures so it is very much so an HDR photo.

When you are taking the photo the volcano part tends to be near dark to the eyes and beause of that the camera like to make it all black. I physically had to take individual shots for different parts of the volcano field. The sky itself is just one shot. Ironically this is the view you get every single morning from the top of this volcano so long as it is relatively clear.

I would say it ranks in my top 3 photos easily. I don't think the money is what mattered me. Just the fact people want to buy this and hang it in their home I felt a great honor in that for some reason. It almost motivates me to want to be a landscape photographer until I realize making serious money is impossible. I mean I sold six copies at roughly $100 each. Not exactly jaw dropping but to me its still gives me the warm and fuzzies. The marketing company that paid me to use the photo on a limited basis paid me $1,000 to use it in their ads. Just can't say how incredible it feels.

As for the wallpaper. I need to find some place to hosit it. I'm not sure if my site can do it since the photo is extremely large. In full resolution it is 37mb in JPEG format. Right now it is my wallpaper on a 23" screen. I'll see if I can find a way to put it up in a size that will be not so crazy on the bandwidth.

A flickr Pro account will let you do that... and it doesn't compress the quality.

Thats amazing! Did you just happen to take it on vacation?

Great Color, what camera did you use to take it?

Well I kind of was on vacation but I already knew roughly a dozen spots in Maui where I'd be camping out for shots. I actually went there and asked my girlfriend to marry me at the same time so a lot of the photos I took have some very special meanings. There are easily 12-15 images that I took on that 1 week vacation that could be sellable. It's just not easy finding the market for it here in Canada.

Part of me wishes I could live in Maui but its near impossible to get a work visa there to start.

anyhoo photo was taken using a Canon 1Ds Mark III, 24-70mm 2.8L Lens with a kenko circular polarizer. Toughest part of the entire thing was trying to get other tourists out of my way. Some times I don't get people that will seriously walk right in front of you when you are taking pictures.

Some of these pictures the exposure was in the 10-20 second range so it got frustrating in a hurry.

Such amazing sky, Quaz! I can't believe it's like that nearly every morning, I guess I better go to Maui soon:D

Well they don't call it the magic island for nothing. I'll need to post up a few more of the maui photos I am going to try to sell :)

I must admit I got some good inspiration from Peter Lik when I had the opportunity to meet him a few years back. He is probably my landscape idol as cheezy as that may sound. And yes it does look that way most days up there. The local islanders tend to stay away since it drops to around 2 degrees to 5 degrees celcius. Need to leave the hotel by 2am int he morning to get to the summit in time. Driving in the dark, up a steep mountain going around 180 degree corners is really an experience :)

This is probably my favorite ever landscape shot. Also the place I happen to ask my fiance that certain question. I'm still finding it extremely hard to market such landscape shots here in Calgary. I think this is why we see so many photographers in this resort towns. They want to sell memories I swear.

Mleh 70-200 is ghetto. I've got the picture of the volcano printed on 28"x42" fuji flex paper sitting in our living room.

The waterfall picture was taken with a 14mm F2.8L.

Oh I know thats why I said it's ghetto lol. It's actually one of my favorite lenses lol. I would just never use a 70-200 for a landscape shot since there isn't really a need to do so.

Yeah It was taken right where the little pool of water is or around 30 feet past the "danger don't go beyond this point - falling rocks" sign.

you mean you don't see why you would want to take panos from slightly further away from the mountains? :dunno: :nut:
