I wanted to start a new thread so we could make this as current as possible, preivous TV purchase threads seem to be from December of last year.

I am looking to buy a 40-46" 1080P LCD TV priced at $1200-1500. I heard Sharp makes great TV's. My roommate currently has a Samsung 5/6 series, and it has great picture quality. The models I would be looking to buy would be a Samsung/Sharp/Sony.

Any beyonders have recent TV purchases that matches up with my criteria?

Feel free to post up some model numbers that I could check out.

Thanks!

I've got a sharp 52" that I got brand new from the Brick for $1250. And a samsung 42" that was $750 at costco that the Brick matched.

They are both awesome tvs except that the samsung doesn't pick up the shaw remote signal very well so thats kindof a pain in the ass. Although it does have a better looking picture quality than the sharp imo. Can't go too wrong these days with most tv's.

Don't know model numbers, sorry, I'm not at home to check it out.

We have a 46" and a 50" sony bravia 1080P etc the one with the glass border. they are pretty good quality in my opinion, blu ray's are unreal..planet earth movies dont even look real half the time.

Everyone will be biased towards what they own so take everything anyone says with a grain of salt. Read up on Consumer Reports and Cnet for reviews and comparisons. I like Sony myself but I won't get into the brand war.

I got a sharp and i'm very happy with it. Only complaint is that when you change channels, there's a bit of lag and not nearly as fast as your traditional CRT tv for some reason. Not sure if it's just my model of TV or LCD's in general.

ahem..... Samsung makes what? 7 lines? Sony makes 7 as well.... You can see vastly different pictures qualities in each line. I would take you budget and look at all the top selling models. I.E. Samsung and Sony.

(I like the V series sony, I dislike 120hz)

If your looking for a decent 40 or 46 tv, samsungs 540 series tv's are pretty good (Fits your budget) 1150 for the 40 and 1500 for the 46. 60000:1 contrast ratio. Also it has a sweet looking bezel so it looks good, even when its off.

they're kind of old but i've been using a 52" sharp... something 92u something...before that i've used a 46" sony, can't remember the model off the top of my head.
both have been pretty good at 1080p, comparable picture in identical environments although i do find the glossy bezel of the sharp is kind of distracting
i also hate the remote control that comes with the sharp, it looks and feels cheap as hell, sony was somewhat better.

Sharp used to be among the best a couple years ago, but they've kinda fallen off the wagon since.

Sony are the best if you're looking for top end stuff, like the XBR8/9. For the low/mid range stuff, Samsung PQ is as good or better and a much better bang for your buck.

Samsung = win. Check out the LN46B610... you can pick it up for around $1600 with some haggling/pricematching when it goes on sale.

Any particular reason why you want LCD and not plasma?

This weekend you should have gone to Visions, they had the Sharp 94U which is the limited edition elite 46" 120hz sharp LCD for $1480 and its amazing. I got one and I am super happy. Usually the Sharps you see around town are the 65U which is an inferior TV and usually they cost even more than this.

Although that being said I think that Samsung makes the best TV's and I spent months doing research and seeing them in person. There is a noticeable difference between Samsung and other brands and the TV's are much thinner too (if you want to wall mount it).

Sony also makes a great TV!!

I would avoid Hitachi LG Toshiba Insignia Vizio Westinghouse etc.

Hey guys..
Just an update.

After doing a lot of research my conlusions and decision:

Best 46" TV: Samsung 650 Series. I highly recommend this TV, Beyonders look out for some boxing day sales on this tv!

First...This was the TV that my roommate had. I have been watching Blu-Ray on it since November of 2008. Its a great tv and and the design is very sleek. When my roommate bought it in November it went for 1900, which i believe is before tax and environmental fee. Now it retails for about 1800 before tax/fees.

My choice: Visions had the SE94U Series on sale (See link above).
The look: TBH I did'nt like the look when compared to other sharp and samsung models. It has the chrome corners which is not entirely appealing to me.
Price: That being said, it was on sale for 1488, Which came out to 1604 after tax and enviro fee. I watched some HD feed at the store, looked great, but I am moving in August so I wont set up the TV until then. If the 650 Series was cheaper I would definitely have taken that over the Sharp Model. Why didn't I spring for a more expensive-better model? I feel one has to draw the line somewhere and My set budget was 1500.
