Is it true that the 06 Nissan Altima engine places top 10 of all time engines?

thats what the guy who sold it to me said. I believe him, I can feel the power.

depends how you define best. If you define best by most mediocre, I'd tend to agree with that.

depends who you talk to
http://blogs.edmunds.com/karl/2008/05/talk-back-tuesday-the-10-best-engines-of-all-time.html

that shouldn't be a selling point

I have an 06 Altima, and I definitely like it. But, I think that's a bit too broad of a statement to really agree or disagree with. Remember that power alone does not make an engine great. You need to think about durability, efficiency, etc.

I assume that the sales person was talking about the VQ engine line in general, which has won several awards. But there are different displacements, as well as different versions (from the original VQ in the mid-90s, to the current version). The North American '06 has a VQ35DE in the 3.5L or a VQ25DE in the 2.5L.

(Edit: sorry, most of the 2.5L in North America may have the QR25DE, not the VQ)

The new VQ-HR used in the Altimas/Gs/Zs/etc is supposed to be better than the VQ-DE in the 06 Altimas/Gs/Zs/etc, but I don't know.

Check out some sources and see for yourself. Here are a couple good Wiki links:
http://wikicars.org/en/Nissan_VQ_engine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VQ_engine

Overall, I think the general consensus is that it's a very good engine. I don't know how well that compares to "top 10 of all time".

omgz no rb26 on the list wtf?? :nut:

Seriously though.. VQ35DE's are pretty good bang for your buck imho. But to say anything is top 10 of all time is pretty tough..

That edmunds list doesn't have a single toyota motor on it. What makes the BMW's TT 3.0 that much better than toyotas 2jz? It took them well over a decade to make it after toyota, but it doesn't seem any more advanced or proven.

I would put the Alfa Romeo 1750 DOHC on that list ahead of the Honda Powerplant.

Built in the late 60's and the design was used in models through the mid 70's with both spica mechanical fuel injection or weber side drafts, Aluminum block DOHC hemi head - a sweet engine.

It was pretty much the blueprint for the 1600CC cosworth racing engine that eventually spawned the toyota 4AGE (16 years after the Alfa engine) and then forced Honda into engineering the VVT engines to compete with the Toyota powerplant (7 years after the Toyota engine)

It's been a solid design commuter engine for Nissan. Does everything well but nothing great. Also nobody ever notes the various issues that have plagued the design over the years such as major oil consumption in some years.

Nissan has bored and stroked the engine to its limits though as the VQ37 is not smooth at high RPM at all.

On a top 10 list of performance engines it doesn't belong but overall it probably has it's place.

Personally I would put the Honda B-series at the top of the Japanese engines.

Yes, or the K.

Mind you the K still has to prove itself a little bit more, but the Workhorse B series should be there.

100hp/L, 300,000km+, amazing engines for their time.

OP never stated if he had the qr or vq, or are both engines on top 10 lists.

didnt the toyota/lexus IS350 6 win last year? (north american chart)

There was a time when VQ was ahead of the curve. And it's an awesome engine when VQ35DE started showing up in 2001.

8 years later, almost every manufacturer has a 3.XL V6 that's better than the VQ. Nissan milked it for way too long.

Is the current 4.0 v6 in the pathfinder a VQ series engine?
