I heard on the radio today that the City of Calgary is laying off 200 workers... Is this maybe crossed signals?

The UofC is definitely laying off 200, it could be a coincidence that the City is as well.

Im pretty sure he was being serious.. when you think about it, during a recession so many people take the opportunity to either go back to school or even STAY in school. I know the bissett school of business at mount royal college had something like 2500 applications for the fall and only 400 spots to fill... I dont see why the U of C would be doing any worse??

Because students don't pay 100% of their post secondary education costs. Schools get funding from the government, the same government that has been hit by the economic downturn and has to reallocate funding to stimulate the economy.

Exactly. Recessionary times are perfect for upgrading your education, and also lets you wait out the storm at the same time.

wonder if this has to do with me getting shafted with student loans this year too. Usually I get what I want no problem and this year I'm having trouble getting half with the same kind of information entered.

I can think of a handful of people who don't need to work at the university pretty easily. Bunch of lazy, unionized slackers.

Is it going to be some kind of combination of faculty like professors or administrative people or janitorial people that are going to be laid off?

I just figured I could have been confused by hearing the last part of "unviversity of calgary" and assumed it was the "city of calgary "... Coincidence indeed...

...they still have jobs out for students on career services, as in U of C hiring students for IT and such :dunno:

Probably cheaper by hiring students. Just be glad there're equal opportunity laws so they can't hire just India students.

uofc has shitty profs and not enough classes already, if they are firing professors it better be the shitty ones (and no the ones that get paid more)
