View Full Version : WTF Calfs...

My calf muscles are not growing. Every other muscle is growing, but my calfs are not. It's frustrating as hell.

Currently, I do lunges, squats, and calf extensions. My diet is good, I have about 400 calories a day surplus. Any ideas as to what I could do to stop being a chicken?

Thanks :P

Max out whatever weight you can do on calf extensions and just AMRAP x 2

EDIT: or play soccer for 11 years and develop the sexy huge calfs.

calfs are the hardest area to put on mass.

they can be strong as fuck but still be small.

thats why many body builders get calf implants

Unfortunately you can blame your calf muscles on your parents as I have heard it is genetics that determine it.

I sit at a desk all day, a manly job doesnt help. A790 already spends his whole day on his feet.

I race road bikes, so my calves are noticably stronger and larger than other muscles.

Theres the answer.
Ride bikes.

here's a good link for growing your Calves.
Reason #3 kind of hits Genetics, but take a read.

That doesn't work for me, but I don't race. I've been riding my road and mountain bikes for a long time and I still have very skinny calves.

lol.

Who wants arms bigger than their calfs?

A790, I don't remember who posted it but it was an Article from Dante (DC Training) and he had a good calf routine.

It consisted of MAX incline on a treadmill for up to 30 minutes ;) Body situated in a certain way.

I gained .5" on mine, and some other dude on here gained over an inch.

This thread reminds me of this episode of The Simpsons.

Milhouse (crying): Why did Lisa dump me? Is it because of my small calves? They're the hardest place to add mass!

Bart: Cheer up, Milhouse. You got your whole life ahead of you. Hey, I remember when you were a nerdy little fourth-grader. And now you're an emotionally crippled mini-Hulk.

low weight, high reps. stairs, hill climbs, walk on an inclined treadmill, but try not to hold on with your hands, it takes weight off your legs

10x15 Calf Raises of various kinds. Do this three times a week and I promise they will grow.

I tell chumps who work out and complain about their calves to do as many calf raises a week as they do biceps/tricep curls/extensions. If I had a dollar for every kid who did more than fourty curls/extensions in one work out I would paid!

I don't do curls/extensions. In fact, I don't really do any iso work at all.

I raised my calf raises to 5 x 8, as well as a walk on the tread @ max incline at 1.5 mph, focusing on flexing the calf as I walked. Felt that one for sure.

GROW MOFUGGAS, GROW.

Hmm not sure what your problem is.. I guess just keep on hammering them then!

I will try this walking and flexing idea, sounds like a good one! Isolation stuff is useless, I gave up on it a while ago. So many 'chumps' show up in gym and throw down on the bench and then curl till they want to hurl and leave. Man they look goofy with their chicken legs and large upper body!

how many inches are your calves?

does anyone know how many inches are normal or larger than normal?

some random guy on the internet claims these are 20"

i would assume 15" would be about normal, 13 might be on the small side.

You should also try jump rope. The walking on an incline on the treadmill is a good one, but try walking on it backwards, so you're on the balls of your feet. This will work those calves and quads. 15 incline at a 2.7-3.0 speed and try not to hold on to the rails.

There's some pics of Fankhouser in this thread.

24" calves, just ridiculous.

Dude is huge, however 5'8" 215 on stage so not astronomical like some other pro's.

Or, take up speed skating haha

speed skaters aren't most known for their calves but rather their thighs

With calves, you have to do at least doublewhat your body weight is. Just say your 200lbs and everytime you walk you do about 200lbs of calves; if you want more growth on them you should be/try to do alot more then your body weight, if you can do 300 or 350. and try doing it a few times a week.

Arnolds encylopedia indicates that calves need to be as big as your neck.. just a fact that I have read in that. :)
