Hid.im is a new web-based service that allows users to hide .torrent files inside PNG images. This means that users can easily upload hidden torrent files to their favorite image hosting service and forums, or use it as an avatar on social networking sites without being censored.

That's fine for sharing the torrent file but that won't allow you to download torrents without being censored so the gain you get is rather marginal IMO

So yeah, what's the point of this again? So I can use a .torrent file as my avatar on Beyond?

Pretty much. That way you can share the torrent file with people on any web page without getting in trouble. Stops the need of website such as btjunkie. Those sites are still going to exist though because the ease of searching and the ability to read users commends on the torrent.

i don't see how this buys anything at all. Any site that has a ban on torrents could easily scan images and find out if an image was a torrent. :dunno:

Was this really a problem to begin with? Sounds like it's only for pedophiles.

The only implication here is you can turn any image site (picasa, flickr, imageshack etc) into torrent sites until they change their term of use.

But it'll always be cat and mouse when it come to piracy.
