View Full Version : VERY VERY BAD Shop experience

so i have a supra.. before i bought it the timingbelt was done at a shop called HARDCORE TRUCK AND AUTO, also known as MURPHYS AUTOMOTIVE.

the job cost the previous owner 1700 which is a bit outrageous for the work done.

now i bought the car knowing this, was told it was under warranty, was given the reciept and told that they would give me no problems should anything happen.

i had a licensed mechanic do an inspection on my car to discover that the exhaust cam seal and crank seal were badly leaking oil, and there was a groove in the belt from it never being tensioned on the B-side of the belt.

i immediately contacted the shop with these results, to which they replied i would have to bring it in for them to check out before they decided whether to cover it. by this point they were already aware i was not the owner from when the work was done and that someone had examined it.

before i got a chance to bring it down (only two days later) and during some very gentle driving, the belt slipped a cog due to the oil leakage.

so i call the shop, tell them that it broke, asked if they would cover it and got the same response that they would have to look at it. fair enough. i purchased an ama membership and had it towed to the shop last tuesday at about 7pm.

i went in the following wednesday to give them my keys, show them the reciept and have them look at it. they said they would very likely look at it the next day. i waited until friday and came back, they still had not looked at it and the shop owner was a little bit rude and said if i was lucky, they would look at it by the end of next(this) week.

its now friday, and i came down to politely ask if they had looked at it. he looked under the hood and because my timing belt cover was painted thats where he stopped.

i was then fed a load of crap--the warranty is a limited warranty, its non transferrable and void because someone else removed the cover to inspect it.

fair enough, its about what i expected. now my only question was: why didnt you tell me any of this before i towed the vehicle to your shop?

well he couldnt answer that. the closest he came is that i talked to someone else when i towed it aand not him. i said it wasnt my responsibility to make sure i was talking to the shop owner when this happened.

brb police have arrived

WTF what did you expect? They would do all this work over for you no charge? Especially since you drove the car knowing there was problems.

So after that.. and before the police arrived..

(Apologies for capitalization in first post, was mobile)

I was pretty fuckin' nice the whole time and all I wanted was an answer as to WHY my car was parked at their shop when they KNEW that they weren't going to warranty it a week ago.

I had spoken with the shop owner last Friday, he knew then that he wasn't going to transfer my warranty or do any work on it because he already knew that I wasn't the original purchaser, and that I had opened the cover.

I had mentioned that the crank seal was leaking like a sieve, and he said that he was positive he had never replaced any of the seals in that car.

Interesting. It's at this point I REALLY wish I had brought my camera in and recorded everything as I had planned. He just admitted to defrauding the previous owner of the car. I had the receipt in my pocket saying that he replaced the cam seals and the crank seal.

He just kept going in circles how he wasn't going to cover it like I didn't understand when all I was asking was why he wasted my time.

I then, still being calm, asked him if it would be appropriate to sue him for my towing costs and wasted time, to which he uttered threats about "catastrophic"ly destroying me and my car, nearly jumped over the counter, then yelled at his secretary (wife?) to get his mechanic (son?) who came out with a big fuckin' wrench in his hand and also started threatening me.

I was told I had 45 minutes to have my vehicle off their property or they were going to impound it, thus I had to call the police. Doing so prevented them from towing it, as if they had with the police on the way, I wouldn't have been responsible.

I also wanted to press charges for being general douchebags, but, I guess that's not a law. Damn.

Apparently the CPS was at their shop just yesterday for a fight of some sort, don't have any other details though.

They left my car unlocked, with no brake on, VERY close to a slope, a small push would've sent it into the side of their building.

Essentially, I consider it as them having my money, as this work was done a week before I bought the vehicle and reflected the end cost.

Truly though, I'm glad in the end. I couldn't trust those retarded assholes to fix it properly anyhow.

The physical appearance of the people working in this shop very closely reminded me of a hick family out of a bad horror movie I can't remember..

New belt arrives at MY shop tomorrow AM. Will be running by the afternoon.

What? No. They did the work in the first place and screwed it up, and even admitting to defrauding the previous owner and not replacing the crank seal which is leaking which is the cause of the belt slipping off and being half destroyed after only 15k km.

I have a receipt for work done. It's the warranty statement as well, and says that it should be covered.

Also, as SOON as I discovered the leaks and improperly installed belt, I phoned that shop first thing. They knew then, as they did when it slipped, and when I dropped it off that I was not the original purchaser and that I had opened it up.

It seems the only way the warranty would've been covered, was if I was the original person, and if I had paid them to do a check up, I was also told quite clearly that their wait time was approximately 5-6 MONTHS.

I was also told by the person who sold me the car that this shop was a good shop and good people and that they would have NO issues warrantying the work, he made sure with them before he sold the car that it would be transferable.

look man, ive been in this trade for many years. and in not lieing at all about this, there is so many butchack rednecks its not even funny. thats why i dont understand why everone goes retarted when transport canada trys to tuffen up the laws. well the laws gets rid of these red necks. i could have told you that you werent going to get waranty befor you even towed your car there. you got to look at it this way, do you like to work for free? the shop is going to pull every thing he has no not waranty it. and driving it know it wasnt fixed right is the last nail in the coffin. but getting the kid to threaten you with a weapon is over the top, i would have called the cops too.

Yeah, I totally figured too, the only reason I did is because the guy who sold me the car convinced me when I bought it that they were a great shop and would give me no trouble if I had any issues.

I bought the car in October, this all happened this week. It was running great when I got it and all the work had just been a week or so beforehand.

I still can't believe he admitted to not doing the seals and charged for them. One more thing for me to do later.

Just threw in a cheap belt for now because the DODGEME CARAVAN wasn't cuttin' it.

I used to sell parts to these guys. The guy's name is Mario, and he bought out Murphy's and changed it to Hardcore. We had routine issues with them not paying their bills, and consistently had to stop deliveries to them. Back when they had a guy named Ken working there they had a few issues with some of the work he did, and the new guy Andrew they got is a total piece-of-work.

We had quite a few shady experiences with them, but to be quite honest, the owner knows what he is doing with his motors. The rest of the "crew" there leaves a little more to be desired however.

Wow, not really surprised to hear all that.

That's what I was told when I bought the car, but someone fucked up and I'm pretty sure it was him who did the work personally. He's also the one who threatened me and got all pissed because I told him he fucked up.

As you can see, more than one cop showed up.. The tow truck driver said there were two parked around the corner as well, and someone who works at the neighboring shop mentioned there was some sort of fight the previous day and the cops were there also.

Here's the results of their work:

So, I figured out why the belt went, and why my replacement went a few days later. Totally didn't notice, but, as you can see clearly in this picture:

http://idealsound.ca/supra/dirty.jpg

MY FUCKING idler pulley is MISSING THE FUCKIN BOLT?!

Like fuck, how can you put that back together and miss that bolt. I did only because I didn't remove the idler, they REPLACED it on their job.

Basic logic tells you that if things start breaking on work that was just done, you can pretty much bet they do shitty work and have an attitude to match. It will just end up being a waste of time and likey cost you in the end... as you found out the hard way ;)

Thanks for posting up this thread though, even thouhg you are taking some heat you are helping people be aware of a shitty shop that takes short cuts on work.

You're right, and as I said I knew it in the first place, me being tight for cash just made me hope that maybe they weren't fucks. Nope.

Short cuts?

They didn't put the bolt in the idler pulley! It was held in by the set bolt.

That's not a short cut, that's just a straight up fuck up.

Now that I have proof of that as well, I should really take them to court.
