Video of the accident.

aTDiYS1NVW4

Wheel comes off, hits him straight on in the head, knocking him out (and probably killing him) instantly. Straight on into the tire barrier. So sad that his dad survived probably the most dangerous era of F1 and motorcycle racing, and he gets killed at age 18 in such an innocent looking accident.

RIP.

How fast would you estimate he was going when the tire hit his face?

They were saying 150km/h.

Horrible fluke accident :(
I hope he didn't feel anything.

Wow, how often does another driver perish without their vehicle physically touching anything? Talk about a fluke. Poor guy, RIP.

wow
thats sad, just watched the video.. looks so harmless, i didnt even catch it the first time. Dont they have "tire restraints" so that this kind of thing doesnt happen?

They use tire tethers in Formula 1, but I have no idea about F2.

They have them in F2 as well, but they do fail. Even in F1 they fail when impact is big enough.

Telemetry shows impact was at 200km/h!

He died instantly the tire hit from massive head and neck injuries. His foot was still on the gas when the car was stopped after crashing straight into the tire barriers. Brutal.

edit - video updated with working one.

Very tragic, and that's a genuine freak accident - you cannot make racing 100% safe.

Looked totally innocent, I had to watch it twice to catch it. Wow...RIP, 18 years old.

Tragic.

 When you're meant to go it just happens, what are the chances of that tire hitting him dead on the head in that open of an area.

RIP.

Poor kid, it seems he did not die on the spot. http://www.flagworld.com/news/?p=20883

"
Henry was driving between Westfield and Sheene corner when he was struck on the head by a wheel and tyre from another car which had hit the tyre wall ahead of him just before. Henry was immediately knocked unconscious and his car failed to negotiate the following Sheene corner and collided with the barriers.

The race was red flagged and the medical team were with Henry as soon as possible. He was removed from the car, stabilised and taken to the medical centre where the medical team prepared him for transfer to the Royal London hospital, the regional trauma centre, by helicopter[...]"

That was the initial report. Later reports say even though there was a faint irregular heartbeat when the doctors attended to him, he was long gone.

Jesus... I had to rewatch it twice just to see it. You would never think of a driver getting killed in something like that.

Reminds me of the Dane Cook "tire in the face" skit,

But still sad to see an aspiring racer have to go like this, RIP.

Heres Raikkonen's crash from '05 where you can see the effect of wheel tethers.

He was never walking around, that's the driver of the first car that crashed (the one that lost the wheel) that you see walking in the video. Their cars just happened to be similar colours.

The driver walking around was the driver who originally crashed and lost the tire. They didn't show any more footage of Henry after the crash.

The guy walking around was the first car to crash.... his tire came off, bounced across and kill the henry who was in the 2nd car that crash... The camera angle of them showing the first driver makes it look like they are filming the 2nd guy....

Wow, thats insane,
OP, the wheel didn't even look like it came close to his head, the angle was bad. Thats really horrible thought how the wheels are tethered on, i wonder how many tires on theater / death compared to tires free / deaths there are...

Sutil had his accident in China this year and both his tires broke off from the tethers... one going across the track...

On any formula car the tethers only attach to the hub, so if the have a failure beyond the hub (ie: the stub axle, center nut or the wheel itself) the tethers are rendered useless.

Massa got hit in the head in qualifying yesterday, surprised there's no thread about it.

Seems more and more like they need to move away from open-top.

Would be cool to see the cars with a canopy, make them look like jet fighters on wheels.

Massa news is in the Hungaroring thread.

Though safer, I don't think they'll move towards closed cockpits. Open wheel racing's been dangerous since its induction, and huge leaps have been made in terms of safety regulations and equipment, and probably saved Massa's life. I don't think these two fluke incidents is going to drastically change the regulations of the sport. Wheel tethers could've saved Surtees, and the Massa incident was a total fluke.

Hakkola

Yeah, I agree, doubt anything will change, but fluke or not, 2 incidents in 2 weeks is pretty eye-opening.

I was going to check the Hungaroring thread but I'm just starting to watch the race now, don't want any spoilers.

Ya def. finish the race b4 you go in that thread. It's full of spoilers, a few of us were watching live this morning.
