High-definition WRC coverage coming to America

Television coverage of the FIA World Rally Championship will be available to millions of households in the USA later this year thanks to a new partnership between series promoters, ISC, and the Discovery Channel's HD Theater network.

WRC programming will be shown weekly on HD Theater starting in October. As well as coverage from every round of the championship, a range of other features and news bulletins will be shown.

Part of the Discovery Channel's range of networks, HD Theater is one of the most widely distributed high-definition services available in the United States. Specialising in adventure, technology, nature and world culture programming, HD Theater also covers a number of racing events, all of which are shown in a 1080i picture format and with 5.1 digital surround sound.

“This is tremendous news for the championship and our fans in the United States," said Simon Long, ISC CEO. "It is a ground breaking deal which means the WRC has a high-profile broadcast presence in the United States via a hugely-respected, quality and innovative partner in Discovery Communication’s HD Theater,”

“We’re looking forward to the opportunity to take the WRC to an ever wider audience in the significant U.S. market, and working with HD Theater to bring more attention to what we firmly believe is an ‘epic motorsport adventure by the world’s greatest drivers,’” he added.

Clark Bunting, president and general manager of HD Theater, said: "HD Theater has been a pioneer in high-definition programming and we are excited to introduce the FIA World Rally Championships to our American audience. This year we’ve seen the action go from the snow-covered roads of Norway to the hairpin turns climbing the Cordobese Sierras of Argentina, and the adrenaline-fuelled rally action will shine in high-definition."

Unfortunately, it looks like it's US only at this time. But that means for US satellite subscribers will be able to watch it, or Apple TV US account holders, or probably torrents.

The channel in question is HD Theater which used to be called Discovery HD Theater, and is not the "Discovery HD" available on Canadian networks.

Bell ExpressVu for sure doesn't have it. When I emailed them, they said they'd forward the request to the team that does channel management, because there is content on HDT that isn't offered on other networks already available on Bell.

I've also emailed HDT asking them for info on if HDT will be available in Canada, or, if the coverage will be available on some other channel currently available in Canada.

Torrents may very well become available from this, but for what it's worth, torrents already exist of the Eurosport coverage as well.

^^ Keep us updated on what you find. I'm sure I'm not the only other ExpressVu customer who would be interested....

We don't even get Mythbuster on our Discovery HD. No chance in hell we'll get WRC. Since our Discovery HD is owned by CTV, it's more likely we'll get it on TSN2 than Discovery HD. Since they already spend $ on F1, I really doubt they will bring in WRC.

As much as I like to see the WRC on HD, it just doesn't look interesting at all.

For those who might be hanging on to find out what results I might get from my emails, don't hold your breath too much. I have nothing to report. HD Theater hasn't replied to me and Bell has already given me their answer as identified above.

So if I am reading this correctly, they will be showing every round of the 2009 season in HD starting in October, right when the championship is wrapping up. To me I would rather watch the rallies on the same weekend in lower definition than watching it months later in HD.

Funny you should say that... I have all of the eurosport coverage for the past 3 years, and at the beginning of this year I stopped watching the WRC because it was getting ridiculously boring. I found out about a month ago that Hirvonen is actually leading the championship atm, so I am pretty excited to be getting back into school where I'll be downloading the torrents again. :D
