So I've been getting into golfing more and more now, and I think it's time to step out of the 9 holes. I've golfed most of the 9 hole courses in Calgary, mainly because of time issues with 18, but now that August has rolled in and I have more time, I was wondering what are your favorite courses for 18?

I'm looking for some good public courses that are okay in pricing, so nothing baller like $100 per round :D.

So far after looking into it a bit, most courses need a membership...but there's some like mccall 18 and fox hollow. Any other suggestions?

Silverwing, Bouldercreek, Shaw-nee Slopes, Maple Ridge, Heather Glen, Speargrass, Riverspirit, Water Valley are a few that come to mind. Check them out and your mileage may vary for each course.

I hate fox hollow. The fairway is really narrow on the front nine. Plus speed of play is really slow, much like a city course. Maple Ridge is probably the best city owned course, but it's hard to get a tee time there, now that Shag is only allowing play for the back 9 and the valley 9. I don't know what's going on there.

Try www.calgarygreenfees.com. There was also a thread about this from a year ago http://forums.beyond.ca/st/229029/golf-courses/

Heatherglen is pretty easy to find a tee time for, since they have 27 holes. Fairly easy to play. They have an island green on one of their nine's. I usually play it if I can't get anywhere else. http://www.heatherglengolf.com

Boulder Creek is cheap, about $60 bucks around including cart, but the course is only 2 years old I think and needs work. Easy to play though, very wide open. Carts have GPS which is helpful. They're still trying to attract people, so there are some good packages available, just check the site. http://www.bouldercreek.ca

There is Beaver Dam out by Madden up north which is ok, but I probably wouldn't go again. Too many elevated tees and greens. We actually did see a beaver hiding in a dam while we were there. http://www.beaverdamgolf.ca/main/index.php

Speargrass is decent, although quite east of the city. The only one I've played where there is 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's, and 6 par 5's. The scenery for the last 3 holes is pretty amazing. http://www.speargrass.ca/

There is also the Canals at Delacour which is pretty good too. http://thecanalatdelacour.com/

It's going to range around $60 - $80 for a round including cart, unless you play a city public course, which is still above $50 if I'm not mistaken.

By far the best value for your money is Kananaskis. I got there at least once a year. I managed to book a round in August this morning for Mt. Kidd. Surprised that it was available. Looking forward to it!!

Thanks for the advice!! I'll definitely be checking some if not most of those out. How do you think Maple Ridge rates compared to Shag or Confed? I've never golfed it, probably the only city course I haven't tried.

Shaw-nee has a good deal on Mondays as well.

Some of my favorites are:

Maple Ridge
Elbow Springs
Douglasdale isn't a bad little 18 hole course

Rivers Edge in Okotoks
Kananaskis golf and country club is always very nice - Alberta Residents get a discount!

Mckenzie Meadows is pretty good, $55 with cart! 6pm-dusk

I'll be checking out Boulder Creek tomorrow in Langden, apparently it's a pretty nice course for its price $25 6pm-dusk.

Come try out Oxbow Country Golf Course in Strathmore. It's only nine but you CANNOT beat the price. $50 with cart for 18 holes. If you come during the week on an evening, I'll go with ya for a quick nine and maybe even toss in your round for ya.

Stick to city courses if you dont want to pay alot, they range from 35 to 50 a round

I heartily agree with both of these statements. Fox Hollow is junk, and Kananaskis is a great course at a fair price. Plus, it's a nice drive.

Sirocco and D'Arcy Ranch are both good if you want to head south.

Try Nanton http://www.nantongolfclub.com/
A 9 that I like is Crystal Ridge in Okotoks http://www.crystalridgegolf.com/
If you can get a tee time you definitely have to check out Kananaskis. Kidd>Lorette
I've been trying to get a decent tee time on the weekend for Maple Ridge but so far it's impossible

Watervalley is better than Beaverdam and about the same drive.

I think Maple Ridge is a good city course. I'd say it comparable to Confederation Park which was my "home course" until I bought a pass to Bearspaw this year.

Fox Hollow is dangerous. I'd play Elks which is next door before I'd play Fox.

^^ are wiib and barry still at bearspaw? oh the memories... as a junior, i must've put 200+ balls into the drink on 10... i can't hit far enough to drive that bastard par 4, but it never stopped me from trying...

if you don't mind driving a bit, check out innisfail... imo, one of the true hidden gems in the red deer area.

Stay the hell away from Silver Wing. Ridiculously over priced and the course maintenance quality does not mesh w/ the price of a round. For a 18 + cart I believe I paid around $70.

The majority of the greens were in horrible shape, the lack of trees doesn't exempt you from losing balls, cause the open range and unplayable areas tend to gobble up balls like crazy.

City courses are the best bang for your buck imo.

Maple Ridge is a good course. It's a city course, but it's probably one of the better ones in the City.

Elbow Springs and Shaganappi point are gooders too.

Glen Eagles is ~$65 for twilight, that's one of my favorites in city limits.

Wiib is still there, but not sure about Barry. I've put quite a few into the drink on #10 as well. They just had the Alberta Amateur there last week, seen quite a few of them going for it on 10.

I just went to the Pinebrook golf course with a couple of friends and man.....it was epic.

Great weather, we finished 18 in 3.5 hours, and it was just an amazing course. Need to get out to different courses way more now!
