So, I'm in the market for a king size bed...and after looking around a bunch, the prices from most stores start at around 1,500 and go up into the 3K range...

...but then there's these guys on kijiji:

What's up with this? Not a scam I'm guessing, but is this furniture just liquidated or stolen or what?

Any opinions??

No name stuff that's cheaply made with cheap materials and details overlooked to cut costs? :dunno:

I guess it ain't bad if you're just looking for a mattress.

My dad is a GM of a mattress factory and there are times where a retailer orders a specific bed but ends up cancelling last minute. If no one we know is interested in the bed, the bed could sit around for months and they end up selling it for CHEAP just to get it out of the factory. For example, the factory made a bed that has a MSRP for at least $3000 and I know my dad got rid of it for $500. Whoever got that bed is fn lucky.

The phone #s posted on kijiji don't belong to anyone I know. Your best bet is to see if you can take a peek at the bed. Check to see if the fabric is clean, stitching is clean (no loose threads), and see if you can lie and roll on it. If you feel like the bed is uncomfortable or your gut tells you it's not the one, then don't go for it. Also, if the individual trying to sell you the bed is rushing the process, chances are it's a bad bed.

Shopping for beds is pretty trippy but most mattress stores offer some sort of return policy just in case your bed is too soft or too hard after a couple night's rest. So take that into consideration. Good luck!

I think I bought a mattress and boxspring from a similar type outfit a few years ago.

It was an E-bay auction, winner of the auction (it was like 99 cents), got instructions and information of who to call. Met up with the guy who had a large storage locker in one of those self-storage facilities.

He had a ton of mattresses and boxsprings in there. Most were mismatched pairs. Some had small stains (like a grease drop, little bit of dirt, or scuff from shipping. The one I bought had a ripped carrying strap/handle but nothing else wrong with it.

The price was like 1/3 of the regular price of a mattress, so I bought them. Never had an issue or problems, still have it and it works great.

Paid in cash, didn't give any "personal" information, and everything was ok.

The first link is International Furniture wholesalers. Hes been in business in Calgary for many years, so rest assured you won't be getting the run around. The owner i believe is Les.

the second link is choice furniture. Matt and Mike are awesome guys with great product. Those two run their business alone, so low overhead at wholesale = good prices for you. They now have a big warehouse where you can test all the furniture out to see how you like it. their website is www.choicedistribution.ca I dont think they update their website often but it gives you an idea of their products

I also bought a mattress from the site above. They were based out of a self storage place, and had some random mattresses to look at and test(everything was in plastic). However, I wanted something else and he offered to get it made. This is where the story goes bad. They repeatedly missed delivery dates again and again after we first agreed on the mattress. It took well over 2 weeks since the promised date for the mattresses to get it delivered. For the first delivery date I drove all the way down there from the NW, 40 minutes or so, and was told when I got there that they didn't have it. What a waste of time.

Horrible experience dealing with them and their delivery dates, but slightly made up for it by giving me free delivery after I drove down there two or more times and coming home empty handed. If they have something you like in stock, it's a good deal. But if they have to get it in, or get it made, move along. Not worth the hassle.

One thing you might want to keep in mind.

You can haggle pretty hard with the sales people at the conventional mattress stores. The markup on mattresses is HUGE.

If the mattress pair is $2500 regular price... you should be able to get it for $1500-1800 delivered and sometimes even cheaper.

The closer you get to leaving, the lower the price.

There's a fellow who sells mattresses out of a storage unit in the SE near the Deerfoot Casino... I can't remember his name, but I have bought 3 mattresses from him and the prices are awesome.

It's not major brand names... but still, decent stuff at good prices.
