im looking for something cheap for winter that a can bastardize. preferably rear wheel drive (drift stylez yo!), something reliable (import) with decent power, and lots of fun. :D

what would you recommend?

edit: car should be relatively compact.

I'd look at a 280zx or 300zx from the 80's!! Those things are soooooo much fun in the winter, and have an absolutely ass-kicking heater!! So hot it'll burn your feet!

I loved my old 280zx turbo in the winter, -30 was good for a couple of pounds more boost :D

I saw that too! I think I know what's wrong with the one that runs on the booster cables but dies when disconnected, my 78 280z did that..

82 BMW 320i, RWD with an LSD. It's my parts car, but I haven't pulled anything off of it, haven't had to. I really should get some air in the tires and check out how the heater is in the winter. Body is all banged up, she's not pretty to look at, but damn if these cars aren't fun to drive.

For a compact import that has to be rwd, I'd probably look towards 'yota... old corolla or something similar. Always potential to be a rally-beater in the future. Unfortunately the late 80s brought about changes to make most small imports FWD.

AWD- I've seen the odd beat up turbo DSM for $2000-$3000.

If it doesn't have to be RWD, you can look towards that Nissan Pulsar or whatever you want really... Also, you can occasionally find a Swift GTi for cheaper than a 3 cyl. metro. Except the SSGTi has 4 wheel disc, better suspension, infinetely better 16 valve 4 cyl. motor (forged crank/rods/etc), that you can basically bag the crap out of off the 7500rpm rev-limiter all day long and still get 40+mpg. Definetely a good winter beater... Drifting is accomplished by snow tires on the front and cheap summer tires on the back (or hand-brake). Pretty neutral car even with that kind of front/rear tire set up... in the slush/snow/ice I and haven't had back-end become the front end yet.

My ssgti was my winter beater while I had my Talon. And really my daily car as the Talon spent more time in my garage then on the road. The Talon went out the door and paid for a trip around Western Europe and more school. The beater still gets beat.

I picked up a 1989 Mazda MPV, rear wheel drive for a winter beater. Fuggn fun as hell in the snow, so easy to drift yet keep under control. Plus you can do drifts with 6 of your buddies in the car at the same time, not to many cars can do that! (legally)

edit: what years did it come in RWD so i can look out for them? not reliable. It seems one should put aside 50 to 150 in repairs every month. (saw that on club4ag). As for RWD, all of them up to like 83 i think, and the AE86 or corolla GTS 85-87.

the car is over 15 years old, chances are there are a lot of little things that need to be replaced. will it make it through winter? I would think so, but be forwarned.

also, dont get an ae86 cuz there are already enough rusted out ae86s out there, dont need another one.

i dont think rwd older cars is a smart idea in the winter, no matter how much fun it may be, itll still be a bitch getting up hills no matter how good of tires you got on it... get something awd, like an izuzu impulse awd turbo cheap and "should" be good in the winter

I found one for a winter beater, took a bit to get it roadworthy, now I dunno if its really a beater.
It just looks like one.

Haha a datsun 510 would be a sweet choice. I also know someone selling a non-turbo S12 (200sx) for 3,000. The car is in good shape too. Red in colour, and I'm almost 100%sure those are RWD.

i think i might take that guys 84 turbo 300zx for 500 bucks if it can be fixed.

I'd bet its the alternater. A new 1 would cost around $150.

Sounds like a good deal to me:thumbsup:

HAD ONE, kept on getting stuck every where..........too low!...........not to mention hard to find, parts are and arm and a leg, 'cuz they don't share parts with anything that sells in Canada...any front wheel drive with some half-assed winter tires is 100 time better than any RWD...........

Eagle talon AWD TSI. I picked one up real cheap for $5K and it was mint with low km's!

I have an 1990 volvo 740 that I mostly drive in the winter, it's RWD and I put nokians on it and nothing has stopped me, hills are fine. Just get a really good set of tires and you don't have to worry about anything.

Old volvo would be cheap but the car is huge, bigger exterior than my benz, but the doors are aluminum and it's very safe if you get in an accident, and a very fun car in the winter.

lowered honda civic with +3 degrees of camber, summer tires in rear, winter tires in front, no shocks in the rear, no thermostat, a heater fan that dont work, no rubber on peddles, shovel, ice melt, and some 2003 toyota matrix floor mats.......Most fun in your life winter car!!!

O plus did i mention it will plow snow in your drive way?

well, if you don't want a chevvete (you need taste ;) :D ) why not a 1st gen rx7? great suspension, rwd, less than 2300 pounds, cost of 2000 or left, and there are quite a few rotary heads on here.

Ah 1st gen Rx7... I donated mine to the kidney foundation, got tired of trying to start the thing...
Carburation + winter = no fun IMO

I saw a 1990 turbo Laser AWD 5speed in the bargain finder for $2,800, get a 80's supra, with the pop up headlights, RWD Inline6, cheap.
