View Full Version : Best doughnuts in Calgary?

ExtraSlow

Looking for the best doughnuts in Calgary. Lots of good bakeries make some very mediocre doughnuts. Timmies no longer excites my tastebuds, and I was never a fan of Krispy Kreme, although i think they are closed now.

So where do you get your Doughnut fix?

Also, on a related note, does anyone know any bakeries that are open evenings? Prefer North and Central locations.

The Boss and I were talking about this out of the blue yesterday and we really couldn't think of a place. Maybe Robins Donuts? I haven't been to a robins in like 6+ years. I don't think there are any Country Style places around either. We concluded that everyone just wants coffee these days. :(

Safeway FTW. +1000.

Freshly baked every morning, you can smell the donuts and bread throughout the whole store. It's definitely my favorite place to go to.

I agree that Superstore might have decent donuts when baked fresh, but who knows when that is :nut: . I find superstore baked goods to be so disgusting due to how they're stored. Everyone touches them with their grimy hands, etc.

another +1 for safeway.

So good, especially the ones covered in the caramel maple stuff.

I'll answer the second part of my question.
Urban Bakery on Edmonton Trail is open till 9pm weekdays. I doubt if it's fresh at that time of day, but it's open. Just picked up a pie. Will report back.

Everytime I go there and have a doughnut, it tastes like it was sitting there for a couple of days.

Another one for safeway. Their danishes are likewise great. I hate superstore's pastries, they're always crazy hard, even the fresh ones. I'm a softie.

Haha I like the croissant donuts there but I feel like shit after eating one. Maybe it's because a croissant is already so fucking fat already, then you glaze the shit out of it and drizzle chocolate on top.

Gas stations have good donuts. I usually gas up at Petro and grab a donut and then put it in the microwave there. Not bad even though it was probably sitting there all day.

Yeah they packed it up, but I believe you can still get the pre-packaged ones.

My wife bought some ham and cheese bread from there, and it was pretty effing good, but I could only eat a bit before feeling all the lard and butter that goes into it.

Drive out to strathmore in the morning and go to Rocky's bakery. They are usually sold out by 10:00am. They are soooo good and always still warm when you get them. So fresh

question from a corn-raised yankee:

why do canadians love doughnuts so much?

i really don't get it.... doughnuts are even used to coerce the secretary in Strange Brew into giving up the secret code to the evil factory!

Mmm.. It's not just Canadians. It's North America and more, probably more in the States as there are more variety.

Busy people = Not much time in their day/morning to eat, and donuts and coffee are quick, easy, full of energy and delicious.

nope, i'm from the states, and can assure you that this is a Canadian cultural thing... i've never seen any culture anywhere in the world so obsessed with doughnuts as canada. i mean c'mon, i'm typing about doughnuts on a canadian car forum :)

do a google search on "canada doughnut consumption" and you'll see that canada has the highest per capita doughnut consumption in the world. (e.g. http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/food/articles/2008/04/12/canadas_holey_icon_our_eyes_glaze_over/

there is also a book about canada's love affair with the doughnut: http://www.amazon.ca/Donut-Canadian-History-Steve-Penfold/dp/0802095453

Tim Horton's is HANDS DOWN the absolute WORST doughnuts in existence.

They are like Wonder Bread with icing since they no longer actually make them fresh anymore.

The best donuts I've ever had hands down... was actually in St. Louis (I was there a month ago):

http://www.missouri66.org/donut_drive_in.html

Blew away everything I've found here. The locals all seemed to be pretty aware how good they were... there was a steady stream of people there. Maybe in the states it's more of a regional thing. *shrug* As I didn't see ANY chain donut stores there...

Safeway has the best donuts but the best Chocolate cross-aunts go to Superstore. It's hands down the best, this is at the Country hills/sarcee one that I go to. Don't know about the rest but definitely worth a try.

I don't know about Superstore's freshness in the morning, but any sweet stuff there in the day is simply terrible. I used to love their muffins, but now they rarely have Carrot flavored anymore.

Pretty sure they are all shipped in frozen from gfs like literally everywhere else. Placed in a special oven to warm up that they call "baking".

Personally have never understood the appeal of donuts, I'll eat them during a meeting or something but almost always regret it. They are really not that great of a food.

I guess they are cheap and have that going for them?
