I'm not really mechanically inclined so I'm just wondering what exactly happened here. There was a Mercedes in front of me at a red light. There was a loud "bang" coming from the MB and the car obviously shook quite a bit. The light turned and the driver pulled over to the side to examine. Left on the ground was a metal disc and a spring.

I've never seen anything like that happen before.

to OP: sounds like the spring perch or damper failed, making a loud pop, and resulting in the spring and perch falling to the ground.

You don't happen to be Brazilian, do you?;)
