Anyone in the Calgary Area, specifically to the north, HEADS UP!!!!

Massive storm system heading your way, with baseball sized hail already reported. It may weaken before it hits Calgary... (I hope), but so far it's on a direct course.

At 12:20 A.M. MDT radar shows a pair of strong thunderstorms - one cell 55 km southwest of Rocky Mountain House and a second cell 35 km south of Rocky Mountain House. These cells are both moving southwards at 40 km/h. These storms produced baseball sized hail earlier this evening. These storms are also capable of giving gusty winds and heavy downpours.

We were almost directly under a lightning bolt on our way back from the mountains a few hours back. There was a massive flash about 50 yards to our left and an immediate thunder which sounded like someone shot our car with a shotgun, Pretty freaky! :eek:

Looks like the SW portion is starting to weaken as it's passing west of Olds. Main cell is still going strong, but it's path is to skim the airport heading SSE. I think it will weaken as well.

Well that was easily the most intense storm I've ever been involved in.


Drove from Mckenzie towne, where there was no lightning, no sign of any storm, to my house in Sherwood NW.

No rain at all until I hit deerfoot/memorial, then I almost had to pull over. People had their hazards on, debris was flying on to the highway, and the sky was almost constantly lit up by purple lightning.


Just got home now to see it had passed us in the NW and was reaching my friend in McKenzie towne.


Gotta love summer storms, best I've seen since I've lived in Calgary.

It passed my area like 20 min ago in the nw pretty much on the edge of the city, the wind was so strong it was shaking my computer desk and when I looked out the window to see why, all I saw was rain. Flash flooding down the street on the low point. Feel bad for the corner house who parked his car outside, it's flooded to just up to the bottom of his front bumper. Light show and thunder still going on though

Might go for a drive tomorrow and see how much wind / hail damage there is in the fields.

I thought the world was going to end out here in Airdrie... one minute sleeping peacefully, the next the wind whipped up and the sky turned purple. That is, until the rain came in sideways with 100 km/h winds and blocked out the sky... which was fine, until the goddamn hail that came down with all the Lord's fury. I feel sorry for the guy with the brand new G8 GT parked outside on the street... I can see the dimples in his sheet metal from here.

Calgary is very lucky that this thing turned into a line the way it did. I'll take wind over very large hail anyday.

holy crap it took all of 10 minutes to turn shitty, i left my garage when it got super windy, got to the end of the road and it started to rain, got to the end of that road and it started to rain hard, got past 16th ave, on 68th street and my windows fogged up, pulled over to turn on defrost and ac and it was so bad to drive that i had to follow the yellow line in the middle of the road to get home... praying that nobody was doing the same because i couldnt see three feet in front of my car... I HATE RAIN, yes it replenishes the grass and farmers bitch alot less, but it just sucks to try to smoke in your car

Both ways out are seriously impassable.
