I was thinking to buy a charcoal colored 2005 toyota matrix XR edition and I was wondering from a guys point of view if its an acceptable car for a 17 year old boy. It drives very smoothly and it is fairly new selling for about $9000. What do you guys think?
its sort of like this:

I don't see any problem with it. It was designed and targetted at the young driver generation (not as much as the new Matrix, mind you), the "young professionals" if you will. Also, being a Toyota, it will be insanely reliable. All in all, for a "first car," I think it'll do well.

The bottom line is that it's not how other people think of you, it's that you love the car you have. I have a rusty, crappy, dying, piece of shit 1990 Honda Civic that I got like 6 years ago now, it's gone through hell and winter, broken down more than once, patched back together from cannibalized parts.... man I love my car ^__^

And if you really are worried about your manhood, a fitness freak I know (used to live with the guy, like 185 lbs 2% body fat o_O) uses a red Matrix of the same model as his daily driver, so I think you're safe :P

yeah man, if you like the car get it, it doesn't really matter what other people think, toyota matrix are great! reliable, good on gas, look decent and they have room to boot! i'd say go for it, and if your still not happy- throw some D's on that bitch!

From the "guy approved" perspective who is the first person you imagine driving that car when meet one on the street? For me it would be a middle aged lady. A Ford Flex or Edge might be better for image if that is the type of vehicle you are looking for or better yet an Xterra or some other kind of young guy sport utility.

Ford Flex, or Edge? I don't think so, to me that suits a middle aged couple kind of vehicle. Matrix definately fits the young person persona, when it comes down to looks, utility, and even performance if you step up to the XRS model.

I agree with the Xterra, suits a young person as well if you like offroading, outdoors etc....

Toyota Matrix is a great vehicle, my sister has one and i drove it around for her wedding day. Decent enough space for people in the front and the rear, I would certainly recommend this vehicle. I would have killed for one as my first vehicle :D

Go with some lightweight 17's, or 16's would be even better.
18's will just add to your unsprung weight and negatively affect acceleration, braking, and handling performance. It's not a powerhouse, but can be made into a fun car.

Gaytrix is decent car. Not my first choice, seeing as it is just a Corolla hatchback. The average Matrix owner is 48.

If you want a Matrix, stop looking at Toyota and look at a Pontiac Vibe. It's EXACTLY the same car, with a different badge on the front, and it also costs significantly less.

To the OP:
1. If you mean "is this an acceptable car for a 17 year old who needs basic transportation", then the answer is yes. Point A to point B, practical... the "T" badge actually means 'toaster'; it's the appliance of automobiles. You could pretty well stick any Toyota nameplate in there and you'd have the same answer. If you like it, buy it.

2. If you mean "is this a cool car and something that a 'car guy' would approve of", the answer is a plain and simple 'no'. As a 'car guy', there are a plethora of other cars I'd opt for in the same price range before even considering a toaster.

I agree 100%. The Matrix is a good first vehicle but don't expect to gain any "car guy" points for buying one.

And @ 17, I doubt you can afford any insurance for "car guy approved" cars anyway.

Matrix is a great choice until your insurance come down and you can buy something nicer.

I said my sister owns one, then I said I drove it around for her wedding day. It was a lot more roomy than my saturn sc2 that I owned at the time so I could haul around family members.

Do you need further explanation?

A matrix in high school would be better than the oldsmobile cutlass i drove in high school, and just having wheels alone in high school gives you attention from girls... least with a wagon theres tons of room to fool around in the back seat... ;)

Meh. When I was 17, I just wanted to drive a car that nobody figured belonged to my mom. Matrix could easily be Mama's car.

That sounds like a great, reliable, and respectable mode of transportation. If you get it, don't mod it. It won't be worth it. If I were you I'd get that and then start saving for a project car that you can take time to research and build without the hassle of it being your daily driver. :)

get an integra and save $7000. They're both gutless and slow but at least the integra looks better.

get a 98 Maxima and you'll have 5k to spare, something just as reliable, more quick, and won't depreciate much more. While the Toyota will keep depreciating.

Its a good appliance car - nothing wrong with it. No one is every going to say nice car if that is what you are looking for.

I would have killed for such a car in high school. Seems like you made a good choice!

NO MODS!

the only acceptable mods on such a car would be rims and tint. Even then, don't do it. lol

I bought my 98 Integra as a first car and really liked it. they are kind of a girls car, but no worse than a matrix.
