I'm looking at getting my first DSLR camera. I'm a total newbie when it comes to this, and after a lot of research, I've narrowed it down to the Canon XSi.

I'm deciding on where I should buy it, and if I should get a lens kit or not.

I'm looking at mostly taking pictures of scenery, especially buildings, landscapes, etc, and some portraits. Looking to use this for random stuff around town and traveling.

Costco has a package that includes the 18 - 55, as well as a 75 - 300 lens, along with a SELPHY ES2 Photo Printer (that I don't really need) for $979. http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10320650&whse=BCCA&Ne=4000000&eCat=BCCA|79|4708&N=4008713&Mo=16&No=0&Nr=P_CatalogName:BCCA&cat=4708&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-CA&Sp=C&topnav=

The camera store has a similar package for $899, but no printer. http://www.thecamerastore.com/products/cameras/digital-cameras/digital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-rebel-xsi-18-55mm-75-300mm-kit

My final option is to buy just the camera itself with the standard 18 - 55 lens. I have a Visions gift card, and if they can price match, I can get it for about $550.

I would also like a wide angle lens eventually. Does it make sense to try to get a package with that instead of the 75 - 300? Or should I get familiar with the camera first?

I would go with the body and a higher end lens if you can afford it. The 18-200 IS lens has gotten me some great shots and is light years ahead of the 2 kit lenses you are referring to...I also have a rebel XSI. I have come to realize that lenses make the world of difference...so if you can afford it, try and get the body and a higher quality lens.

My .02

And if you want to buy the body only, I have the 18-55 IS lens from that kit for sale that was used for about 50 shots before being replaced....virtually brand new. This will allow you to get familiar with the camera and then you can upgrade to a better lens once you figure out what you want to buy. I will sell it to you much cheaper than new...PM me if interested.

the xsi with kit IS lens is 650 at dell.ca btw
i'd do that and sell the kit lens

then buy something like:
tamron 17-50 f2.8
canon 70-300 IS USM or 70-200 f/4

the kit lens is decent, but the 70-300 is horrible. a cheap alternative is 55-250 IS but u'd just want more range/sharpness later on
