I just picked up a T720 about 2 months ago and reception for the most part when I'm out around the city is fine. Having a room in a basement does cause some problems at times but with some strategic manuvering, I can still get full reception in my basement most of the time.

Unfortunately with the T720, theres no way of knowing if you're on 850 or 1900 Mhz. So, its basically pray for 850! I do run into a small dead zone on Barlow Tr by the old Firepark market. Other dead zones I am aware of are top of the hill on Bow Tr by the Shaganappi golf course and by the Woodies Taphouse on 17th at around 35 St SW.

roger has always, and will always SUCK. fuck them. fuck fido. go on a cdma network. both cdma companies (telus and bell) have awesome coverage. for the most part, their plans are quite comparable...so really, just look for a phone u like from telus or bell, and base your decision on that. cuz after that, the plans are about the same.

I don't think the Roger's 850 network is up just yet in Calgary. Last I heard it is up and running in the Toronto area, and isn't supposed to be complete until December.

If you want to go with a SE, maybe wait for the T630, its supposed to be sweet

http://www.sonyericsson.com/ca/spg.jsp?page=T630_Overview&B=ie&PID=10117&LM=PSM_V&gal=

Seems all the new SE GSM phones are supporting GSM 850, 1800 and 1900, so you should be ok if you want to go on rogers and use their 850 network

lol, nice greg, i can't agree more about the GSM service in Calgary, it blows ass. I hear that GSM is all the rage in Europe, but were not there now. Besides that, my buddy bought a Rogers phone+plan...and he was worried about rumors of how bad the reception is, the Roger's rep said: " were constantly working on our networks " .....his reception has gotten worse if anything.

well N.A wont get t630 till Q1 2004 which means even more waiting for us. Considering how long the 616 was out and we just got it recently. Also, the t630 doesnt seem to have a whole lot of improvements, just a few

What's wrong with the T720? The new ones are far better than the buggy, no battery life of the ones that were released initially....or is there something I dont know about?

Is there a way of telling from the phone?

Depends on the phone, but i do know that it is lumped together on the most Motorola phones. The band is denoted as 850/1900 and not seperately which is too bad.

Also what's up with the dinky 3 bars for the battery on the V60g and T720? There is a detailed battery information that you can get through the menus that is out of 6, but it just goes 2 at a time....so essentially it is the same as what you see on the top right. I never seen 1/6, 3/6 or 5/6 on that battery guage....so useless.

That's because Europe is a lot smaller than Canada. That and they have no other network to play with, they always have had, and always will have GSM. We here in North America have TDMA, CDMA and GSM. Converting everything to a single band type is difficult.

GSM technology has been around for years and years in Europe and alot of Asia as well. In alot of those places it's easier for someone to have a cell phone than it is to have a home phone....the cool thing about GSM is the portability with it. Sim cards are cool and all but GSM in North America hasn't caught on and I don't think it will for awhile.

There's no way Telus or Bell are gonna convert to a GSM network especially considering all the cash they've pumped into their networks developing 1X technology. Also the fact that one of the major US CDMA carries has a major investment in Telus as well.

what are the major pros/cons of CDMA. Well its easy to see why CDMA is still alive, but it seems that GSM is the favored network of choice.

Voice clarity, reception, portability are the pros of CDMA. GSM is great, but North America isn't set up for it yet.

portability? i thought GSM would have the advantage here.

Yah GSM does have the advantage in portability all you gotta do is plug in a new sim card and BANG you're up and running. A CDMA network theoretically does provide better reception and better voice clarity.

Another pro for CDMA is it's a complete binary system which makes it a quite secure network. CDMA is used in places like South Korea and Japan as well too but none of those phones would work here even if you did have it unlocked. They work off a 1800 MHz CDMA system and we have a 1900 MHz system.
