I've never been to one of these shows before but want to get a piece done and thought I'd check it out. Is it possible to get inked down there or is it more just an opportunity to check out people's work?

My piece would only be 5"x5" or so, but would have a lot of detail and shading. Not sure how long that sort of thing would take but I'd imagine a couple hours.

Any thoughts / advice for this n00bie?

Most of the top artists are already pre-booked for work at the show, and expect to pay a bit more of a premium price compared to regular shop work if you do find someone who is taking walk-ups... What kind of piece are you wanting? I have many well respected tattoo artist friends who will be working the show so I don't mind asking for you, but depending on your preferred style, some artists specialise in ceratin areas...

I'm looking to get a globe (B&W shading) with a red maple leaf behind it, with one side sort of wrapping around the globe. I'd like it to have a 3D feel so the shading will probably be what makes or breaks the piece.

I'd definitely appreciate any recommendations or links to your friends' work!

Sweet, thanks Tirebob - I'll take a look.

I really like Rob's style! I'll have to drop by and see him at the show. If you do talk to him and find out he has an opening let me know!

My friend holds the convention every year and good luck getting your peice done there. Most artists that are actually tattooing there are pre-booked and are doing crazy peices to show off their work. For example, last year scotty from southside did my business partners entire hand with a huge skull, some bullet casings and some other shit to show off his work, and right after that tattooed a huge jesus across the side of some guys head, that's the type of work to expect from the tattoo show.

it's still worth going down to. It's almost like a ghetto art show, but cooler.

Here's the link. I've been the last 3 or 4 years, I think. Just to check it out because I think the art can be really awesome. In terms of getting any actual work done there, most people who get it done there want something elaborate so it can be shown off by both the client and the artist. For something small like that, you're better off making an appointment at their shop. Having said that, it's a good opportunity to check out and talk to the shops and they can steer you in the right direction, so it's easier than having to drive shop to shop.
