Hey Anyone Know when the New Telus Network is rolling out?

possible this fall, but until there is an announcement, no one knows.

it will probably launch in January, as they have publicly announced that it will be fully launched for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

I would advise using the search button as there has already been 4 or 5 threads on this already with dates in them.

i think its completes the Nationwide Coverage by early 2010 for the olympics, but i can be wrong.. just read up saying it might launch in major provinces first like Quebec, Ontario, BC, And AB first and slowly make their around the country

Rogers LTE is slated for 2010 to I believe.

Will Telus' HSDPA match Rogers current 7.2mbs network? Only to fall behind again when Rogers activates its 21 mbs HSDPA?

As much as Rogers rapes customers like all carriers up here, at least they have the fastest 3G in North America

Suey
08-17-2009, 01:54 PM
Not Sure if it will match, but i heard they're skipping GSM, 3rd Generation of 3G so its 3.5G? not sure if thats correct, correct me if im wrong. Also heard it will be at 14.0mb/s

No, telus is launching HSPA, which will, by far, blow Rogers out of the water for data speeds. HSPA is also a stop gap as (while not official yet) has been rumored to then have LTE by the end of 2010.

From what I understand, at this point, HSDPA will only allow 15.X down, and rogers for what ever reason is sitting at 7.6 down. When Telus launches HSPA it will allow for the full 15.x down, and when the upgrade to LTE happens, speeds are going to go insane as current testing with LG has shown speeds of 100 down and 50 up

Sure, it's capable of these wonderful numbers.

Will you EVER see them? Nope.

7.2 down on rogers right now? I get max 1.1. At 3am.

Telus' EVDO network is 3G, it just stands for third generation, nothing else. It's also faster than Rogers' 3G Rev network.

You're limited by your handset. Not many phones especially phones on the Canadian market can do more than 3.6mbs.

I have a Nokia N85 and I'm getting 3.6mbs (my phones max).

I get this in the middle of the afternoon on Rogers.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/520266985.png

Odd thing about rogers is that all the traffic to sites on the east is faster, wonder if they route everything out east.

Even if Telus can sustain 15mbps, their backbone won't be able to support it. They're congested as shit already.

I think the iPhone 3gs is the only Rogers handset to support the 7.2mpbs HSPA 3g?

I'm not in 3g coverage out here in Hanna but in a few weeks when I get back to Edmonton I will have to check my download speeds.

It's not going to be the first 3.5G if telus releases theirs. Rogers will launch a faster network with 20mbps DL speed which is not 4G (Lte/WiMax) They just got this network and it's not covered Nationwide as of yet so why would they invest in new technology when they haven't even finished developing their old one.

fixed

with the amount of companies making the switch to HSPA, including Vodaphone (the biggest), you can be sure that all of the "must have" phones will be available. There are still a few things in the air, but we shall see what happens in a months time.

Ahh! Yeah, current Telus phone with SIMS (World Edition BB's and the Storm) won't connect to a 3g/4g GSM network in North America. You can unlock a storm and use it on Rogers but you only get EDGE.

Sorry, didn't realize you were talking about current Telus phones. Those phones will remain on the CDMA network AFAIK.

Alrighty.

Telus/Bell's new HSPA network will soft launch this Autumn (So. Ontario...Vancouver...). It will have a country wide roll out in 2010.

It will run the bands like Rogers so you will have phones like iPhone 3G/s, BlackBerry Bold/Bold 9700/Odin, Nokia E72/N95, etc etc. I'm not saying Bellus will pick up those exact phones, but you will be able to run an unlocked version by popping your sim card in there.

Its going to be interesting.

The Palm Pre is launching on August 27th with bell, and i really want one, but on the other hand waiting for the new network might not be such a bad idea.

That means that Bell and Telus will be running with Sim Cards, and will have phones like the iPhone 3g/3gs, BlackBerry Bold 9000/9700, Nokia N95/N900/N97/E71/E72.

You will not be able to run your first gen iPhone, BlackBerry Curve 8300/8310/8320, BlackBerry Curve 8900, BlackBerry Pearl 8100/8110/8120, or any other 2g/EDGE device on these new networks.

From what I've heard is that Telus won't launch their new network until January or so.

The network is 100% built right now and ready to go. The issue is the cell sites have not been tested yet for e911 service.

This testing will not be happening until late Oct Early Nov and take 6 weeks to complete since every tower needs to be tested. After the testing is complete it take another 6-8 weeks for the CRTC to review and sign off on the results.

E911 needs to be 100% up and running on every single cell site before the network can be launched. IF your phone can not be tracked via e911 it makes Telus liable and I doubt they're dumb enough to risk the lawsuits that would follow especially with the CRTC fines ontop of that.

Despite all this, Yes Telus finally inked a deal with Apple to carry the iPhone But it looks like the plan will be to take pre orders for the holiday season and send them out in Jan of '10.

Something Win-mo (Omnia 2, Diamond 2 maybe)

Those are a given. I've heard Samsung Omnia 2 when it comes to WinMo.

As far as dumb phones:
LG BL40 (new chocolate)
Probably Sony Ericsson (C095a, C510a, W760a, etc)
random other devices.

From what I've heard there will be no such thing as an unlimited data plan on the new network. Also tethering will be included in the plans.

Ya I'm a bit bummed by that. I think I'll grab an unlocked magic/mytouch 3g and use that on Bell until something better comes along.

You will have to buy an unlocked HTC Magic/Dream for it to work on Bell since Bell/Telus have no EDGE network. MyTouch 3g will not work on Bell or Telus

i dont have any info on pricing yet. my best guess is that it will be similar to the curve or world when launched. 3 year contract will prob be something like $299. cash price will prob be 6-700

I guess 600 or 700 the extra 100 makes no difference. I actually just put one on hold at the Telus dealer I use. I was told on Nov 4th they should know the exact dates.

I called Telus and they have the prices for the phones, just not the plans yet. So if you need to know any of the prices, just give them a call. The iPhone is the obvious prices that Apple sets. So nothing new here.

also I don't know if it has been mentioned yet but Telus is going to go with 21mb/s instead of there planned 7.5. I am not sure if any of the phones support it yet though. I know there new air card will.

$799 for a no-contract iphone 3gs 32gb!? I guess ill cancel my contract, pay the disconnection fee and go to Rogers since they are willing to credit me the price of the phone...

I can't believe you have to get a voice+data plan of $50 or over to get a $99 Chocolate. LOL the phone doesn't even look that good from the launch party videos. Apparently it is pretty thing, and feels cheap.

I'd rather have the Motorola Sholes (Droid) over the HTC Hero...hm to wait or not.

Has anyone done a new contract + phone purchase online with telus? I'm thinking about getting everything setup plan-wise with L&R over the phone, but I don't know if you need to go into the store when getting the whole shibang.

Also, $249-150 device credit on 3 year = me very :D
