I remember seeing a pretty in depth Vacuum thread a few months back but I can't seem to find it.

Regardless, I'm getting pretty pissed off at the current dirt devil and would like to upgrade.

It's down to a dyson ball or a central vac.

Well all know what a dyson is worth, roughly 550 for a DC25 ball.

Now I came across this ad for a Nilfisk central vac made by Miele.
http://www.superiorvacuums.ca/specials/SuperiorNewsprintFlyer%20last.pdf (local vac shop grand opening special good till Sept 5)

$698 installed

In theory the central vac should out suck the Dyson with 586 air watts

Now which is a better buy? Is there a better deal on a central vac else where?

Where will the central vac canister be located? I think if the filters aren't good and the system isn't perfectly sealed, you'll get dust re-circulating around your house.

I have a Dyson (DC14) so I'm probably biased, but my parents had a central vac, and the previous house I was living in also had a central vac and they both weren't very good.

My reasons:
1) The seals for the plug ins wore down throughout the house so even though the central vac motor could move a lot of air, it was so inefficient (leakage) that it wouldn't vacuum properly.
2) The hose was long and heavy so that meant it was a huge pain in the butt trying to drag it up the stairs (comparable to carrying an average vacuum cleaner). Also, I found that the hose would damage the corners of the room/frame over time just by rubbing up against it as you're going from room to room.
3) And if you have allergies like me, this won me over: http://www.asthmaandallergyfriendly.ca/vacuum-cleaners.html and information as to what they test for http://www.asthmaandallergyfriendly.ca/fileadmin/pdf/Press_Releases/Canada/afcertification-en-07.pdf

I bought a Dyson. Absolutely unreal how much this thing sucks up. The 1st vacuum in the basement filled the entire cannister with dust / debre from the dry walls which I had no idea was there and the builders vacuum surely missed.

Can't say I have any experience with the central vac system, but they have always seemed to be a pain in the ass.

the cannister would be in the garage... and the house is new so I wouldn't be worried about leakage or antyhing.

I can understand the long hose but I'd be willing to sacrifice for better cleaning. They have those hose socks that should protect the walls and such.

Understandable, my dad had the hose sock and it did reduce the damage to the house, but it was hard to get a grip and still did some damage, although over a longer period of time.

The best way would be maybe to find some friends with a central vac and a Dyson and see if the Dyson picks up anything the central vac doesn't. What kind of carpet do you have? (Berber, cut pile, etc?)

I went with a central vac over the Dyson. You can install this yourself in about 1-2 hours. No issues with suction/leaking or damage to the walls. Just bought a hose sock and haven't seen any problems. Better for resale on a house as well. It won't add value but when selling your house it's better than saying that you'll leave your Dyson in the closet. :D

hah.. I think that theory was discussed in detail in the old thread with the vacuum always leaving something behind? I just have regular pile.. nothing fancy..

Had a Dyson, MAYBE worked a little better than a cheaper vacuum -- crapped out right after the warranty period -- not that impressed.

We put in a central vac, and I love it. It's got a lot of suction, and there's very little noise while vacuuming, unless you're in the garage. I installed it myself, so the whole project was done under $1000 including the vac & kit.

I bought a Eureka Boss CV550, and been great for 2 years now.
