what happens if your order doesn't get filled 100%, and then the price moves up, and you change the order to a even lower price, and lets say it hits few days from now, would that be part of the same transaction fee or i'll be charged again?

Vanish3d
09-24-2009, 12:48 PM
dinan, the "same transaction" applies only if your order gets 2 or more part fills on same day. so if it half fills in the morning then half fills in the afternoon, then u will have ONE fee. if it half fills the next days its a new fee.

i love BNN, whenever there are some CEO's or some investors and talk about a stock, most of the time you'll see lots of buying right when they talk about it....

like today, i'm holding some shares of WAV.to, and it was holding it's own with 200+ down on the TSX, and when they started talking about it, it shot up from like 5.04 to 5.29 :) got to love it....

but it is a good company, i filled it few times and still hold some shares, im looking to add few more....

All this talk of brokers is starting to make me think ScotiaiTrade is not as bad as I thought.

Free data (no additional fees), with 30 trades a quarter you get a free thompson reuters terminal (java based) which is minus a few of the extras and $9.99 flat fee.

at 150 trades a month you get $6.99 flat fee. But I didn't realize so many brokers had data access charges. If I had a windows based set up at home I would have access to even more programs.

RIMM is so messed up.

They beat EPS guide in line, and improve on margins. Stock goes down 10%. This same thing happened last quarter as well. I was thinking of selling some calls today because they were so highly priced RIMM would have to go up 6% for me to see a loss, too bad I didn't.

I use QuesTrade, but just the basic web-based platform. I don't really do anything except buy and sell with it and get RTQs on stocks I'm interested in. No fees to use it, transaction fees are $0.01 per share (minimum fee of $4.95 per transaction) up to a maximum of $9.95 per transaction. Seemed like some of the lowest fees I could find, and the only issue I've had with their service was their lag in getting HNU/HND updated after the split.

Yeah, I know that is the downside in the report but the truth is that their expectations are too high and their valuation too low. I think it is something called Apple love. No one except Apple is allowed to do well in an analyst's mind.

But RIM is not a stock you want to own. I figured that out last quarter. I bought before their big jump then sold on the extended pullback after their last quarterly report (turns out it went higher only to go lower again). One day they are not going to beat and they will crash really hard. I believe this was one of the principles Benjamin Graham had in never investing in growth because one day the growth just isn't good enough.

RIM has a trailing P/E of about 19. Which is far too low considering their growth and industry. That doesn't matter because the street expected a blowout. For a comparison Apple is a 32. Let's not even talk about Palm. Hell even someone like Home Depot has a higher forward P/E than that.

Also, remember for 6 straight months companies beat on the bottom and not on Revenue and went up.

okay, one more broker question..

so what system do these brokers use?? FIFO or LIFO ??

lets say i buy SU at 39$ then buy some more at 35$, 500 shares each... and i decide to sell 500 at 37$ ... do i sell with 1000$ profit or loss ? :dunno:

i called BMO, and they said it's FIFO, called twice, they didn't sound too convincing......

do these online brokers allow you to change that?

okay, one more question,,,, after a sell do you have to wait 3 days for the transaction to clear.....

Thanks!

The problem with TD active trader is that you have to do 30 trades to qualify for active trader. So you get raped in fees then you get to qualify to use active trader.

Thus the switch to Questrade.
FIFO with quest.

Dinan
09-24-2009, 03:40 PM
^ yeah thats why i don't want to switch, i got raped with BMO and now i'm an active trader and have 9.95 fee.... dont want to start paying 30+ again just to be able to buy after hours, cause BMO can't...

thinkorswim.ca looks really GOOD! i hope they start accepting application really soon!

It's not accounting. It's an average number. Unless you are talking about tax purposes. In which case it would be first bought first sold. So you would take the loss which could be used to offset any gains you have.

The sell is usually a clearing time that every broker has but I know my broker will allow me to continue buying the second the sell has been made.

Not that I know of.

The other nice thing about Quest is the money transfers out of the account takes at most 2 days and costs nothing.

But from my understanding most brokers are FIFO?

^ correct

19,500 (500 shares x $39)
17,500 (500 shares x $35)
---------
37,000 / 1000 shares = $37 per share

This is the adjusted cost base (ACB) for each of your shares and is used to determine your capital gain or loss.

Not sure why your broker told you it was FIFO.

Well the average share price is calculated so if you sell the shares you will sell all of them at an average of 37 dollars

But if you were to sell just 500 at 39 then yes you will take a loss.

bwling
09-24-2009, 08:23 PM
No, that's not the way it works for tax. It doesn't matter if you sold 100 shares, 500 shares or all 1000 shares. In your case, $37 is the price you use to determine your capital gain or loss.

Each time you buy new shares at a different price your ACB changes and you use that new ACB in calculating your capital gain or loss.

Read the ACB section on pg 21 in the following link and look at the example on pg 22.

Do you think it will continue to fall, and if so what is the down-side resistance?

Your total cost basis is still $37/ share, so you'd techically only be out your trading fee.

I just had a rant yesterday about RIM. I think I might buy some too. The only problem is I told myself I would stop trying to bottom pick. 19 P/E for the fastest growing large cap in the world. I just think Wall Street has an Apple man crush.

I am actually getting even more mad about it. A forward P/E of 14-16. What has the world come to? The market pays double for Palm.

Better yet the market pays the same for companies like Macdonalds, Wal Mart, Microsoft and a host of other companies that are never going to get any bigger.

Dinan
09-25-2009, 09:49 AM
okay, here we go again...

LIFO

lets say, i got 500 shares of SU at 37, that's $18 500

i buy another 500 shares at 33, that's 16 500

lets say thats all of my cash, i'm all in... thats 35 000

so the price is at 35$ now, and i want to sell 500, that would mean i get 17 500$ more in my account, no???

so i got 17 500$ in my account to play with... then i see SU at 38, and i'm like let me sell this and hope it drops ... so i sell and i get 19 000$, right?

so right now i got 17 500 + 19 000 = 36 500, i got 1500 more then what i started off with....

doesn't that make more sense then the LIFO FIFO thing... thats more of an accounting thing...

now if i use the FIFO, i get this...

500 @ 37
500 @ 33

sell 500 at 35, means i would lose 1000 from my frist buy cause i have to sell those....

now i sell at 38, thats 2500 gain - 1000 gain, still 1500 gain, like above

now average... 33+37/2= 35

500 at 37
500 at 33

sell 500 at 35 = 0
sell 500 at 38 = 1000 gain...

this is trending up, now i know it will get more complicated if it wasn't,,,, i think i'm putting too much into this, and i should just trade

sound about right?

Bisklimpkit
09-25-2009, 09:56 AM
^ Instead of making it complicated, why don't you just track it however you want? Regardless of which way you look at it, all of the scenarios you described above give you an overall gain of $1500. I don't think there's any difference between realizing a $1000 loss and claiming a $2500 gain, or simply claiming a $1500 gain, correct?

I'm not a fan of how QuesTrade tracks things, so I made myself an Excel spreadsheet which I use to input the stock symbol of what I bought, date I bought it, quantity, transaction fees, etc, and then I input all of the sell details to get my new/current balance. I figure just go with whatever works for you.

I have a huge spreadsheet where I document every single trade with commissions, etc. I know exactly where I stand in terms of profit and loss, per day, week, month, etc. I also keep a detailed list of stats on a variety of metrics, just so I can see where I need to change things.

If you are trading quite a bit, you need to keep track of where you stand.

I keep a basic spreadsheet on all trades, although it can get rather laborious.

I was just wondering what sort of metrics are you talking about. I would like to make the tracking more useful than just simple tax purposes.

I keep track of average P/L per trade, percentage of profitable trades, percentage of losing trades, percent gain/loss per week, P/L per week, etc. Keep in mind that I make on average (according to my sheet) 18 trades per week in my day trade portfolio. Thats where the stats are most valuable. One stat that I am trying to improve is when I do take a loss, it is usually a bigger loss, meaning, I hang on too long, so that stat is telling me I should be selling my losses earlier, easier said than done lol.

In my long portfolio, I just keep track of the buy and sell price, P/L, dates, accounts. Stats don't really help here.

I really don't see how rim's situation is that bad, they still have half of the smartphone market, and which company is really competing against them in the business segment? If alpha won't get me there, then hopefully beta will. Go speculation!

The fact that so many are willing to buy at these levels probably means more downside. Although the valuation is ridiculous and the analysts are insane, I am sticking to my rule of not trying to catch bottoms.

But when it does start to turn up RIM is cheap at these levels. I guess analysts figure that missing on subscribers in a quarter where they haven't rolled out anything special in handsets is the end of the world. I love how Goldman Sachs analyst had it as a Conviction Buy down to Neutral. All upgrades and downgrades are good for is trading not investing.

The Tour is fully implemented for the next quarter and the Storm 2 should be coming around the corner. But oh MY GOD! They missed on Revenues. It is not like they cut employees like so many other companies. They were hiring. First it was the weak margins despite high revenues and now it is the "weak" revenues and higher margins.

Sorry about sounding like a deranged pumper.

One thing for sure. If RIM which missed on Revenues and beat earnings due to increasing margins and not layoffs, gets smacked like this. Earnings season is going to be very rough.

I bet if you looked on the interactivebrokers.ca website under the main menu heading "Fees" you'd find the answer to your question...

If I recall, it's free to deposit and you get 1 free withdrawal a month (ETF). It may be $2 or something for any further withdrawals.

Well I did, and didn't really understand it, I saw 100$ for a deposit.so it's better to find out from someone who actually has an account and knows.

Thanks

See Hou bouncing up today!
Also fair chance that Hgu will rise or settle with less daily negative returns then previous trading day. But I am leaning towards bullish for HGU

I'm not sure where you saw that (unless you were reading the part for MXN currency?), but I've never been charged for deposits and haven't withdrawn yet so you should be good to go.

no shit, what is everyone doing with thier HND? do we still expect NG to drop down to levels that some of us can start to imagine breaking even? or are you selling at a loss expecting NG to go nowhere but up from here?

Anyone have any plays in mind with HOD?

I sold mine at the end of last week thinking that must be the top for HOD, then it has continued to rise.

I was hoping for an oil rally, which would be a good chance to grab some more HOD, then oil could continue to fall a bit in price.

Any thoughts on where the downside resistance is for oil prices?

holding HND still.

These next 2 days will be key. Front month expires (oct contract) and Nov will be the true focus. Thats when, lets hope, that NG prices fall and HND rises to at least respectable levels.

Yes - had I been around the computer yesterday I likely would have ditched it in hopes of getting in at a lower price. I'm looking at it as more of a long-term hold in my portfolio so if it continues going down I may average down on it. We'll see...

Tsx most likely will rise today with a percentage gain greater then yesterdays.
Leaning towards the short side on NG.
Again bullish on HGU.
No consensus on HOD/HOU for today.

Also you guys ever consider Shorting your bear/bull etfs rather than longing one or the other. The potenial returns from only trading the higher priced ETF is significant.

ie gains from yesterdays longing of HOU as apposed to shorting HOD would have been a profit of 320 rather than a 200 dollar profit.

Just something to think about.

Dinan: There are no fees for taking money out of questrade by EFT (electronic Fund transfer). Its nice for people like us who do this full time. I don't like the whole restricting how much you can take out of an account.

Oh the only up side to IB as I see it is the options pricing is alot more expensive.

Also the price of trading straight equities are alot cheaper with Quest.

ie: 2000 shares would cost $20 with IB while quest will on;y charge you 10...'

Seriously look into quest if you are unhappy with your broker.
The on;y advantage to IB as I see it is the options pricing and the API availability.

Don't forget though if you shorted HND you would have made 50% whereas if you went long HNU you would have made 100% in the quick nat gas move.

I usually short the leveraged ETFs but it is something to consider that your upside is capped.

because its OTC pink sheets. It wont let you buy them with TFSA and RRSP accounts because they are "risky" and there are a lot of scams with pink sheets. You can only buy it with a regular investing account/margin acct.

So Rx, your pretty confident oil prices are going to bounce back up again in the short term, and that $63 will be the downside resistance point or trough bottom?

Not necessarily true. If you're playing some low dollar stocks then it's more expensive, yes, but if I were to buy as 200 shares of RIM, a $14k trade, it would only cost $2. Also, the commissions are the lower of $0.01 / share or 0.05% so it really depends on what you're throwing around.

Depends on what your trading. If you're all about the penny stocks it's definitely best to avoid IB. If you're trading <1000 shares then IB is generally cheaper.

I'm not contributing as much to this thread now because I'm in Yemen now. With the time change, I can't really day / swing trade like I used to. Trying to pick up some longer-term investments now.

At least I have more time to study fro my CFA!

This is true. I guess I personally am always buying shares in the 10-25 dollar range so quest is the best fit. I know some day traders who will only buy shares that are over $100.

Something that I do like about IB is the Data capablities. But that costs some serious $$$...

Do you do any API trading?
