Normally you buy in lots of 100 however you can buy less if you wish. Some brokerages may charge an additional commission fee when you are buying odd lots.
In addition to commission fees RBC Direct Investing now has a flat rate $9.95 per trade. No minimum account balance required. This should force other brokerages to follow I'm guessing.

Gco
If any of you are following gco now would be a good time to buy IMO.
PP closed 2 million cash @20 cents per share. Another set of assays came out that were good and the stock is trading at 15 cents. It should be at least in the low 20s now if not much higher from the projected deposits.

Agreed - thats what enticed me to purchase. I think a few beyonders have a position in this.

What online brokers so you guys use? Do you pay for real time quotes? Do you have a good stock alert system?
Right now I am with questrade but I don't think its that great for me anymore. Also looking for realtime quotes and alerts that is free or cheap.
Ideas?
woodywoodford
02-04-2014, 07:19 PM
Realtime quotes will almost always cost a fortune, except when it's free (ie NYSE). TMX you're outta luck.
I'm having some doubts on QT too though. Nice service and all that, but I can put limit orders in and watch the bids & asks bounce around well inside my buy/sell zone for half an hour but not fill the order. Makes no sense, maybe this is what they mean when talking about soft dollars buying "best execution".
bmeier
02-04-2014, 07:40 PM
Thinking of switching to virtual brokers they have great reviews and are low cost. Where can you get free real time quotes for NYSE?
Questrade has been OK for me but I like to try different companies from time to time.

CompletelyNumb
02-04-2014, 10:39 PM
I pay Questrade for the full monty. L2, real time, etc... Buying and selling OTC stocks multiple times per day makes it worthwhile.
Plus they had a 3 months of free trades promotion on so I started a new account to take advantage of that.
bmeier
02-04-2014, 10:47 PM
Ya if you trade that much it makes sense. I don't trade that much so its more just for my own interests... I might see if they will give free l2 if you have a certain amount of equity.
sabad66
02-04-2014, 11:45 PM
L2 / realtime with Questrade was 89.95 a month last time I checked. A bit too much for me.
With RBC you get L2 if you have >50k. They also recently reduced commissions to 9.95 flat

I just stumbled across thisthis (http://www.rbcdirectinvesting.com/active-trader.html) , sounds like if you trade more than 30 times/quarter you can get level 2 and realtime for free. Anybody know more about this? Min balance, etc etc.? Hell, I've traded probably 30 times this month alone.

Charts. I play the stock price and the volume. See where moves are being made. I try to grab the cheaper ones so that I profit more with only a few ticks increase. +0.0005 is nothing on a one penny stock, but a gold mine for a hundredth of a penny stock.
Also keep a close eye on message boards. Look for stock promoters. Pumpers and dumpers. Rumour and hype can make a stock jump back and forth all day long. Investors Hub is a fairly active source for this. I'd recommend not blindly buying stocks that are being suggested though, check the charts and make your own determination.
And the best advice I got from that crowd was simply "You never go broke taking a profit". Lots of these stocks are jumping up by multiples of ten or more. But I usually cash out after it doubles. At the very least cash out my initial investment and play with free shares. I don't long hold these like some traders.

As for the other stocks I posted, some took a dive. Daily P/L was a mere 14%. Holding on to BGNN and XNRG for longer than normal as I believe they will see a jump.

It is possible to lose more than 100% on certain securities, like futures.
Simple example is a crude oil contract, they require about $5,000 in margin (your cash) for you to open a position. Then, for every dollar crude moves up or down you make or lose $1,000. So, if crude drops $10 that day, you owe the brokerage firm $5,000.
Voila, your P&L is -200% :D

I expect the stock price to at least double if their first quarter financials show strength after the complete re-structuring. They still have solid contracts in place and haven't done any major layoffs.

It's a stock I've held for a couple years, it was recommended by my ex's dad who is a day trader and he has helped me a lot over the years with some great tips. He told me to put money into TBE and just forget about it, that it would make me money without any work at all. That was before they even started their dividend.
A lot of analysts are big on it as well. Great management team and healthy results. They've done a great job thus far, had a couple stumbling blocks in the last year but that's over with now and I see an easy 30% upside. The dividend pays ya 7.5% as well I believe at this point.
I'm also really big into BAC and plan to buy more.

TBE has been mentioned a few times in this thread. The 8.5% divi is nice but overall pretty flat (at least for the last 5 months or so when I bought in). I may buy some more now that you mention they are over their hurdles. Need to do some DD tonight

I added the following to my portfolio:
GTAT
CSIQ
SLTD (Small gamble for me)
ARIA
3 Solar stocks and a bio-tech company. All look like they have great potential.
SLTD is developing a 3d solar cell that should be 25% more efficient that your standard cell. I can see huge potential once they're prototype testing is complete and these cells hit the market.
ARIA is interesting because there is a major short interest holding the stock down and they have nothing but positive news moving forward.
CSIQ and GTAT just seem like great mid-term investments, I can see myself making 2-300% on these by 2015.
Cheers

I've held TBE for a while as well. What I love about it is their ability to stay within their cash flow. Great control of their balance sheet unlike so many other juniors. They've said a few times they will not risk balance sheet to pay a dividend. I'll make some money, but I know over the long term I won't lose my shirt.
AudiPWR, I don't understand why these solar companies are worth what they trade at... CSIQ is a fat debt cow and none of these companies actually make money. That makes me nervous for companies that have market caps in the billions.

I'd say its a pretty good buy. Stable dividend and management has turned it around from the two mishaps last year (twice at the same property which is basically written off now). They have grown on every metric (if the acquisition plans out as intended).
Q4 is going to be the first financial release with these new assets included although only operated a few months I believe as TBE.
Market is going to look for a good quarter and a good guidance. If both are met with a stablized dividend and growth it should get back to the 2.50 range in the following months.
Their financing late last year put them at a 3.xx forgot exact number, but that is what they think they could hit so it's a good long term hold for sure.

EDIT: Whoops, thought I was in long term... oh well
Maybe even HEMP or ERBB......just a side note on a potential cheap MJ stock....GDSM just opened up an incorporation in Colorado..."MJ Aquisition Corp"...rumour has it they will do a reverse merger with a public company. Will it happen, I don't know? but a small amount of investment with a share price increasing like the other MJJ stocks might be a no brainer, cheapest MJJ stock to get into right now. FWIW

^^ turns out it's not diversification when every one of them is a canadian intermediate lol. painful couple days over here, but ATH had a nice little turnaround today.
Really tempted to sell some stuff and load up on PDN. Could easily see it climbing ~50% in the next 6 months. Problem there is selling good companies at a bottom, bloody hell.

Well... Half of them could be short, half of them could be long. :D
And, it might be diversification if it was biotech. But thats the only exception I can think of. :poosie:

Majority of comparable companies do not even have infrastructure/ machinery and is trading at $1.00-$4.00 per share...this one is producing from their second mine!! Major revenue here!....hoping....
FWIW..check out Whales website....JP Morgan and other companies buying millions and millions of share earlier this year.....do they know something us normal traders don't?

Really hoping it's not a leak. I mean I've accepted that money's gone, but still secretly hoping it'll come through.
