dunno if anyone is following oil companies in Iraq, but a Canadian company just re-opened the choke on a monster well there
The new flow rate of 11,500 bbl/d was reached after two days of flowing and stabilizing the well at progressively bigger choke sizes prior to the final flow. The final flow rate was achieved on a one inch choke with a wellhead pressure of 2,155 pounds per square inch.

- Challenges now will be producing and selling the oil
- Sarqala is only 50kms away from the ISIS front

They have their fair share of operational issues in the past that have lead to under performance, but a lower entry price and dividends made me pick some up a few weeks ago.

I'm eyeballing the 95 / 95.50 bull call on WTI options, February expiry.
$100 buy in yields $2400 payout if price recovers by expiry. I like those odds given the time frame.

Every person and their dog see's those articles. And it's Goldman of all people leading the herd lmao; there is a portfolio experiment somewhere on the internet doing the exact opposite of their "recommendations" and "forecasts" which is turning out to be wildly successful.
My philosophy is human's are notoriously bad at predicting things further than a day into the future (sometimes not even), which is why I just play my own esoteric odds and try to keep it simple. Simple meaning: oil is low'ish, I think it's a decent price to get long. So that is what I will do.
(Not trying to be offensive just expressing my opinion)
As for buying oil futures and futures options, gotta get a brokerage that offers commodities. I use Interactive Brokers because their commissions are dirt cheap and they have amazing options in terms of choosing which markets to trade and data streams, etc. Makes places like QuestTrade look like dog shit.
P.S. For perspective purposes, US Oil production increases in the past few years amount to between 1% and 2% of global demand. And they are drilling like mad men. Oil has fallen ~30% from its peak in the last few weeks--I guarantee the US production numbers are not the only factor behind this price movement, and I guarantee its not 'new' information either haha.

The drop IMO is just macroeconomic bullshit to be termed lightly hah.
Saudi is playing games and the actual supply demand function of oil is really not as bad as what media is depicting. Media is playing hard ball on oil and pushing it down over nothing vs fundamentals. China economy slowing down, europe crisis/recesssion. It is the same story every year and then when oil is at $90 everyone will be growing so much and demand is exceeding supply and oil will hit 120 and then the reverse will happen.
Since the start of september the media has been feeding negative oil stories to further the blow, from various nations reducing demand to economies slowing growth to saudis doing x and someone else doing x. It's just a bunch of garbage artificially holding oil low but once earnings and guidances come out over the next little while I foresee a recovery or at least some stability.

Not a bad buy, I got 150 earlier in the week at 34.34, and picked up some at 42 in late september.
Averaged at about 37 so not too concerned but still shocking on news today it went down.

From a theoretical perspective, it's not logical to play a predatory pricing game... And this is under the assumption of infinite bankroll, which all players involved have... in a manner of speaking.

Looks like it might be another rough day for the energy sector today. Oil down to the upper 76s atm... how low will it go, now that is the question.
Thinking about jumping in on SU soon here with the dip, maybe even a small position in LRE, I can't stomach putting much into plays like LRE, call me a pussy :poosie:
In terms of the overall market, I am betting it continues to go down, which is why I am sitting on ~70% cash atm. My old man likes to call it the triple waterfall effect in these down markets.
Fuck do I ever wish I got in on CSU years ago, this stock has hardly been hit by any of this uncertainty recently, with a 920% 5 year return

Because I haven't tried going so far back in time with Futures Options, I put a trade on today for Feb 89.5/90.00 CL bull call spread. Took about an hour to get filled but I got 'er.

As a newbie to options, I am curious if I am interpreting this correctly. When you say 113 @ $0.33, that means the total premium was 113*100*0.33 = $3,729?

correct, thats my total investment into it right now and its currently worth $791
BUT since i have 113 contracts it fluctuates a lot with very little movement so im not worried yet, if its still down on the 17th then i will be worried. lets hope that most of what rrx lost today was in panic and its now really "on sale" and hits $8 again soon

My take is that no other company has been positively affected by positive earnings of late. Why would LRE be different.
This downturn is in the hands of the speculators at wall street and the Saudis.
I think there is likely to be plenty of buying opportunities over the coming months. Oil is being walked down to 70.
Hopefully LRE's Natural Gas % will help it next year.

It's all bottom fishing now methinks....buy into O&G companies with good fundamentals that will withstand a downturn (few B market cap, good cash flow, earnings & reserves,) and you will make money in the long run. I would avoid Jr's like the plague right now.

I've refrained from posting in this thread lately since I'm in the O&G finance space, but just thought I'd throw in some colour on this. It doesn't really matter if you hit record production or cash flow or whatever, if you're not going to meet what consensus expects you to hit, then you're probably going to get penalized in the market. In the case of BXE, production (although a record) was way under what every analyst on the street expected. Guidance for the year was adjusted downward, and if you look back to when they first released 2014 guidance you'll see management has been way off all year long.
Not going to comment on LRE but there are better stocks to own out there, it's a discount valuation for a reason. Hopefully we see more green on the screen soon...

I was just looking at bloomberg out of boredom and noticed that these headlines are all directed towards Opec / Saudi and blame shifting over to them for not cutting production engaging in a 'price-war'.
But, I thought about this for a few minutes and it doesn't make sense to me. The United States shale oil is much more expensive to produce, and technically if there is oversupply, then anyone who is still producing is contributing to the oversupply. The strange part is how the US produces oil with higher cost basis, OPEC lower cost basis, so does it not make sense that if the price is dropping you stop producing the higher cost oil first?
How come the headlines don't ask the US to turn off their taps, because for the Oil market it seems more logical to do so? Maybe I'm wrong.

^ most people think OPEC is not cutting production so north American producers feel the pain and are forced to cut back. They make money on any price so aren't too concerned in the short run. Another belief is that this is all a political shell game and the US doesn't want OPEC to cut production as low oil prices are crippling the Russian economy and currency even further.
Either way...2015 will be a year of sub 90 oil prices the whole way, hopefully for Calgary we stabilize above 80. I predict a very cruel 2015 for calgarians...lay offs are coming and will be painful. Housing market will drop...doom and gloom.

Lots of theories about this stuff
A) Saudis want to hurt USA oil production
b) Saudis (with approval from USA) want to harm Russia and Iran.
Marginal costs for new tight oil supplies in the USA are somewhere north of $80/bbl. Some analysts have the "true" marginal costs around $110.

Remember kids, we aren't running out of oil, but we are running out of "cheap" oil. Even the Saudis have seen marginal costs go up.

Difference being that the US does not export their oil... but as far as we go up here, as long as our dollar stays low we will be fine. still a good demand for our heavy crude that is paid in USD

Well E.TO hasn't been doing so hot for me.
Thought it would be a great pick this year. So far it just falls.
