I missed the launch.. Stuff like this I view as the signal, everything else before that is the noise. I just don't have enough capital and time to filter through the noise on my own.
Point is... if its good, it goes to $10 or $20 or higher. If it's not, then back down to 0.2. Which is why I buy so little.

So today I've been having a bit of an off feeling about XBI. It's been going up for.. well forever. haha. Thinking of getting out while I have some decent profits and hoping to jump back in if (when?) it drops.
Thoughts? Someone talk me into or out of this. haha
themack89
05-23-2015, 08:47 AM
The philosophy and construction behind XBI is so different than most ETF's which is why I am so obsessed with it. It's comprised mostly of small cap biotech firm's engaged in research, not companies distributing and selling pharmaceutical products. So they aren't generating revenue, but instead raising capital to go towards product development. Once a product works, or they get some good news, kaboom stock explodes.
Spread this type of investment strategy over 100 stocks at a time when this type of research seems to be gaining more traction due to advances in technology and understanding of biology, especially with a pocket of demand waiting at the gates for the products.
You can sell, but I'm not planning on it. :poosie:

It's easy to get a jaded viewpoint and fail to see the bigger picture (happened to me in oil and gas). Do you think you might confuse rate of success with intensity of success? In that sense I'd say yes you would have better "odds" at the casinos, but the payout structures are remarkably different. I might be wrong on this too, but my portfolio return is ~95% between stocks, ETF's, futures, futures spreads and options, which says on average my ideas are working, despite how crazy or naive they may seem (because I don't work in the industry).

Yeh I think I'm just very jaded with the industry, especially with alot those pre-revenue companies. Since it's a relatively tight knit community (especially within Canada), I do get pretty good insights into what some of the more local biotech companies are up to, and the disconnect between what those companies are telling the market, what they are actually doing, and what the investors think are happening just really scares me.
Don't get me wrong. I like the industry alot and that's why I'm building my career in it, specifically in the biotech start-up space (pre or early revenue). I get to work very closely with potential investors and other biotech startups. It's a good place to be and the rewards are definitly there if the company makes it. It just scares me how many things will to need to line up for a biotech company to be successful as compared to some of the other industries, and I find it very difficult to see how anyone can make a truly informed investment decision based on the very limited public information that's available. Not that I wouldn't invest in any. I'm an angel investor for one right now. But in terms of buying stocks in biotech... I rather go pay craps lol. I say almost 80% of the C-level biotech executives I talk to/work with have said they don't/wouldn't invest in the biotech equity market themselves when asked the question.
Anyway, definitly a very personal, one-sided, and jaded opinion :)

Up 11% on news that the CEO would be ringing the bell to close the Nasdaw market.
Typically these bell ringings involve a significant news release, hoping for some major cell news! I would be a bit disappointed if he is just doing it for publicity.

I misread your post.. I capitalized on Halo yes, but it wasn't a huge position. I was mostly concerned about TCK which I meant I had 1000 shares of haha. Its up 8% today seemingly on no news, which is insane volatility for such a high market cap company. Anyways, I am calm now, back into positive territory for it.

:werd: I'm glad I got in when I did, even though it didn't seem like a steal of a deal at the time (I bought at around $106). If it dips down to $115 I'll buy more, otherwise I'm just going to continue holding until I have more excess money to throw at it than I currently do.

I finally closed mine down. No major complaints, but it's just not a polished experience.
The customer service guys are completely useless though, it took 8 months to close the account because I had some cease trading shares in there, and none of the CSR's knew what form to send me to get rid of them. Couldn't close account until that happened, and it wasn't until I disputed inactivity fees that my situation got escalated and someone finally knew what I needed to do.
Not impressed, but it didn't cost me anything and I never had trading/contributing/withdrawal issues so like I said - no major complaints.

I don't have a super useful answer for you, but my dad and I use an investment advisor at Richardson GMP, and he gets tons of opportunities through her. His account is notably larger than mine though (I don't get any of these), and from what I've seen his minimum investment into these things is somewhere around $40k - I know that factors into it. Hopefully someone else can chime in as well, cause I'd like to know a little more too. I'm for sure going to ask my advisor next time I'm in there.

Good lawd, I honestly can't believe XBI is still running like this. Makes me want to get rid of like half my holdings so I can dump them in the next time it has a short retreat haha. :D
riander: That still won't get you there haha. I think Accredited Investor status is just the first step? From my limited knowledge, you need to be in a place where that 40k represents probably 1-3% of your portfolio. You've got your work cut out for you!
Beyond IPO fund pooling?
I got into XBI middle of last week after reading your guys posts.
Also just dropped 7k into FIT today... up 2.5% so far!!

I’ve been debating buying in to FIT, since I heard about the IPO. I think it’s a good bet, but I’m not willing to sell anything to free up the funds just yet. I’m either making too much money on my holdings, or waiting for them to buck before I sell them:rofl:
On a somewhat related note, XBI is still going cray. Awesome.

I was up 4.5% at one point, and updated my stop loss to my initial investment. Hit it and sold. Lost 20 bucks :( (two trading fees)

I like that play, I don't know dick all about the company but I know everyone has a boner for it. The hype is enough to warrant a long--big institutionals are gonna need their share inventory. Get out before everyone else does though :D

I dumped all my XBI at $260. Shorted $260 calls actually, figured might try and collect some premium.
Only reason is because for the last couple of multi-month rallies its had have always extended for about 50 bucks.
Trade what you see not what you think :dunno:

Yeah, TBH I was thinking of dumping as well. I mean, obviously I considered it a couple pages back when it was at like $250, so naturally it looks like a better sell now haha.
I'm considering putting some money into SBUX, or possibly FIT. I'm a little scared of FIT though, it's still at the stage where it could swing like crazy.
Edit: Anyone going to pick up some Netflix shares pre-split? I’m probably going to get some today in hopes of a bit of post-split gains.

Watching NFLX shares right now makes me glad I never followed through on my threat to buy them yesterday

Wait until low 240's or mid 230's. That's what I'm gonna do anyways. $10 Selloff for XBI is nothing yet

You thinking it will fall as much as it did in April (or close to)?

Bought into PTK (Poet Technologies) this morning after following them for over a year after it was mentioned previously. Hoping for some big gains from this one..
