I've been holding POU for a long time. If (when?) oil goes down again, they'll drop a reasonable amount and I'll put more money into it at that point.

I am not looking for a straight drop to $30 and I don't think it will happen. I only need it to go down a little bit and get out. I will laughing so hard if it goes to $40, but I'll probably brought and sold it (and maybe even HOU) a few times before it gets down to $40. It was a no brainer (for my at least) to go HOD, but I have been wrong many times before... that's why this is a short term play to minimize exposure to risks.

My first reason is I think that oil prices were being held down artificially, and they are starting to bubble up again no matter how much Saudi & market speculators wants to press them down. Things like storage capacity levels were exaggerated, and demand is starting to outstrip supply again.
My second reason is that companies can make a profit in a 40$ oil market, and very easily in a 50$ market. They are finishing off writing off losses and now making purchases, starting new projects, and even engaging in asset buying / take overs.
Anyway, hopefully this goes my way over the next couple of months
Calling the bottom before election results and NDP budget? Seems risky.

Pharma stocks have crazy volatility, news usually just creates movement while its happening... to see growth they not only have to have good news, but it must beat the expectations already built into the price. When i saw you post about this summit my first thought was "lets revisit this stock friday afternoon" why? Cause with things like this happening there is almost always a drop right before... and a 10% drop is just about perfect... so i bought a couple shares, i've been dabbling a bit in this industry. Currently riding the waves of LXRX, $0.10 more drop and im buying back into them, did a solid 5% buying in and out yesterday :nut:

I have been watching closely on the technical's on gold/silver prices. I think we are in the very early stages of a stronger price move. I have exited all my position to lock in some profits and waiting on the side line for some retracement / key levels to turn over before jumping back in.
note. according to one Elliot wave counter I am following it appears the broad equity market (dj/s&p) still has legs to produce one more new high.
if this count is valid, then obviously stock will continue to perform well in the next few months. The real fun begins once this multi-decade long bull run completes and begins to unwind into a decade long decline (depression?)

If this is any indicator, todays price represents a decent time to avg down; I'm considering it. The only thing that has me concerned, is we'll probably see it lose a couple more bucks per share if oil gets to low 40s/high 30s again. :dunno:
Overall, I think it's a good buy now, and represents a great opportunity as long as you're willing to hold for 6-12 months.

Yeah, I was thinking of picking some up today or over the winter.

just my 2cent, technically it would appear oil may have completed a C wave at 37 or double bottom since 09 call it what you will. I've always expected oil to put this in before it's next parabolic rise to the moon (and no a lower c wave does not have to be lower than A set in 09, just dont expect it to triple in near term, the initial rise could take a while but will watch closely for a corrective retracement and double down when the time comes.
I too learn my lesson playing the oil sector back the day, anything with futures can hurt you hard and fast. I suggest oversold energy stocks with high dividend

I'm intrigued by RACE... but I don't feel like I understand it well enough to invest. It's not really a true IPO as it's being spun out and control of the company is pretty well locked up with Fiat still. Using my keen sense of "the feels", I think the big fish are going to extricate themselves from the stock taking big chunks of money with them and knocking the stock down over the next 6-12 months. I'll watch it and reassess later.

I was thinking about buying GPRO or AMBA a couple days ago. Decided to do a that trade with FL instead, I just couldn’t stomach the risk of holding GPRO over earnings. If I had more money to play with, I would have done a straddle with GPRO for sure, but oh well.

DRT.TO just posted record quarterly revenue...
https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/dirtt-announces-record-results-q3-231700727.html
"The increase in revenue was the result of continued momentum throughout North American markets, as well as the strengthening US dollar. During the third quarter of 2015, the Company saw the contribution from the energy sector as a percentage of total revenue drop from 22% in Q3 2014 to 6% in Q3 2015. The drop was likely the result of falling energy prices over the last year. This decline was more than offset by increases in revenue from the financial, insurance and real estate; management, professional and scientific services; retail trade; and manufacturing sectors. "

mining companies took some beating lately. depending on what you think, to me I see opportunity. I have increased my position significantly and while the US has a high likelihood to raise rates in December which in turn strengthens the dollar further and hence weakens the commodity sector. I am going to bet against this as raising rates at the beginning of a cycle actually drops the dollar. In other words if this is true then we will have some decent return across all commodity indexes in 2016 and yes that includes oil.

Let me introduce you to a massive pump and dump, if you haven't heard of them already.
AVXL, or Anavex Life Sciences, claims to have a cure for Alzheimers.
The science is actually quite decent on their drug, and they just announced a double blind placebo controlled study.
Cue... the PUMP!
It's currently up a whopping 80% today alone. It's been pumped once already, from $1 to $14, and it appears it might be on track to keep going up.
Word of caution, when this thing drops, it drops hard.
GL to all, throw a couple hundred into this, set your stops, and check back in a week or two.

just a quick reminder for those investing in oil, imo
looking at the chart for oil price in the past 3 decades, oil hit a double bottom at 10 dollars and after breaking out above 40 dollars, it is now trying to create another double bottom around this price.
anything at or below 40.00 oil is a good price to invest in.

For long term investment, there is not doubt that the current prices are great. For the short term though, the big question is how low oil can go before it turns around. Just a few weeks ago, I would have never thought oil would be below $40 ($39.39 today).

$39.39 is what I got too on two sources. Today is the when the Dec 15 contract expires and floor trading at NYMEX closes everyday at 12:30 our time... maybe it has something to do with that? could it be no more electronic trading for the Dec contract?

The real question now is if the Saudis have enough money to hang on until $28.
If oil bounces around the $40 mark for too long the Saudis might be in a lose-lose scenario.

I am moving more and more money into the US and International markets these days.
The only Canadian holdings I still have are with the banking industry, some larger manufacturing and retail (CoucheTard and Canadian Tire).

Agreed. Currently I'm about 60% in US markets, but I'm transitioning more as time goes on.

taking a small position in PWT just for fun with the gains i made from my recent gold/silver mining stocks.
also switched my position in slw to yri in anticipation that the recent gold rally will extend (actually I had both slw/yri but seeing how well yri has performed since I increased my position significantly on nov11, I am merely moving all my slw holdings into yri)

yup I have no faith in the general stock market right now except commodities. Considering all major asset classes are all extremely beaten down yet the equity market continues to inch higher. This divergence isnt healthy and imo is not sustainable. Something will give, either an extreme rally in the asset sector in 2016 or another stock market crash.
2016 will be a fun year to watch :D

Hopefully you guys got out before today?
I cashed out of UWTI and crystallized a loss. Decided to dump the money into XLE in the meantime, it's a lot nicer to hold for a few weeks than a degenerating leveraged fund haha.
Once oil starts to trend anywhere but sideways, I'll start thinking about DWTI/UWTI again.

My TFSA was at a 50% gain in the summer
Those have all been erased now back to even. :banghead:

I'm looking at something similar (although my gains weren't as good as yours). Tough to see, but whenever I feel down about it, I just chart my TFSA against the S&P/TSX composite returns and it makes me feel better haha.

I have a long term portfolio that I don't touch but I do day trade the Top60 (XIU). It's always profitable, 2-3% here there is better than a day's work. Today looks like a good day to dump a couple thousand shares unless it drops another 300pts tmr. Back to back slaughterhouse. :nut: :dunno:

No..... debating pulling the trigger at a big loss now, but as soon as I do I know it'll jump up to $40 just to taunt me

Oil will go back up... Provided that you haven't bought HOU at a really high price, then you may not have to sit too long to break even. I got in on some positions at $7 and I am not worried. I knew that it is more of a longer term play when I bought it.

Leveraged long term holds don't work... Even if oil goes up I doubt you'll break even
