Well my over the weekend volatility play with TVIX didn't work out very well; down 5%.

What's a bit confusing is that VIX is about even (around -0.5% to +0.5%) while the 2x leveraged one is down 5-6% :dunno:

the 2x leverage ETF's will always do slightly worse than 2X, no matter which direction the movement, you always lose a bit. That's essentially the MER of the fund. Although that sounds like a lot for a single weekend.

the assumption is that it takes a while for things to start up, so there will be a period where supply cannot meet demand and it is during this period price will rocket higher

i could be wrong but I was told 2x etf does better tracking what ever fund on the downside because of the decay and price erosion over time.

Yeah for sure, you don't want to hold 2x or 3x leverage ETF's for long periods of time (weeks or months) as it'll be worn away by decay. But this is the first time I've seen this big of a difference (esp for something less than a week) or even in the incorrect direction.

I stared at MEG charts for like an hour last night given the oil news, but foolishly expected my buying window to be bigger than 30 minutes.

Increased my position at $6.57.

Looking to play the channel with part of my position, looking for it to hit $7.50.

Any advice on determining what ratio to play the channel with, and how much to hold for a breakout?

A breakout "feels" imminent, but prolonged sideways movement definitely looks possible.

All i wish is i had bought UA over their last earnings instead of NKE. Probably not a bad roll of the dice on UA. Steph Curry has been killing it for them

no kidding

even I couldnt follow my own advice lol

"after the initial breakout, MEG has came back to retest the 7.00 area as support. obviously there are a couple of gaps under 7.00 namely at 6.75 and even as low as 6.40 which could happen if any negative oil news hits the market, but for the time being I see these are good buying opportunity. I will only be concern if price gets back below the 50DMA at 5.64,

It's like this morning when I saw LABU shoot up and got very itchy to dump it, but everything I can possibly think of trying on the XBI chart shows it should be targeting at least $59, so I exited 1/3 of my position at $37 for LABU so I could ease some of my lack of confidence.

I'll likely be pissed at myself again when XBI rockets up to $61 like you called

I know what you mean, as long as I can move 2 steps forward and 1 step back I think i am doing pretty good. There was so many profits that I left on the table in the last couple of months it is no longer very funny.

Its not necessary, but id advise much more research either fundamentally or technically to play options, as your losses although limited (limited to the amount you buy your contracts for) can happen at a much faster rate.

To do option trading you usually need to get your account approved for level 2 trading and off to the races

just want to mention the DOW has broken the last intermediate cycle high which confirms there is no bear market (from a technical point of view). This has been my believe for months now that since 08, the governments has learned their lesson to not allow a crash to take place and they will simply dial up the printing press (devaluing the dollar if they must) and continue to sustain the current bull market. Even if there is a crash, I believe we will see new highs first.

as for oil, it was amazing how it recovery after the initial drop due to the opec news over the weekend. This should not come as a surprise considering their reputation to make any sort of agreement. as I was expected, any drop became a buying opportunity and technically it rallied off the 61% retracement level of the 35-42 rebound. Still do not believe in technical analysis?

I dont trade purely off TA, I use TA to guide my trades once I understand and take on a market direction that is everything will go up together for the next couple of years.

However with oil dropping significantly as a result, bears (who are calling for 10-20 dollar oil got excited again) and I must say, oil is now neutral and requires price to break above the previous swing low at 40.8ish to regain a bullish tone and put 44-45 price target right back on the table.

Meg has been recovering tremendously, my regret was not following my own calls to open position in the low 6s as that 'was' the extreme buying zone from my last Meg chart.

will not hang on to see if the market can generate enough momentum from the recovery

i had a great run, but left so much profits on the table and I failed to recognize how strong the gold miners performed. despite gold moving side ways, it continued higher. at this point I will not chase something that is insanely over bought the risk reward just is not there.

I was hoping as I wait for gold/stocks to pull back I can look for other trading opportunities like oil/biotech. at the end it appears had I held onto all my gold mining shares I would have produced a even higher return lol

the launch of the china's gold fix in April certainly did not help me waiting for a re-entry.

I will now just wait this out for gold to dive into it's seasonal weak May-June period.

And if you are still holding a large position, I would expect since the price is near the high, you should be able to scale out or down a little. Always anticipate it can go in both direction.

I sold half of my Meg. so if it goes up to test or break a new high I win and if it drops back down 5-10% I can cost average down again I win

Every morning before market opens, I'll look at my short term holdings (i.e. LABU in this case) and set a stop loss order that expires at the end of the day. Since I spend a bunch of my day in meetings, or with people coming to my office, I can't realistically monitor it enough.

thanks to 1 company reporting bad earnings over night, it has dragged the entire biotech sector down all morning.

the breakout while it felt good when it lasted, the back test failed and so I have to re-open the possibility of my alt count that price can head back down of a larger degree correction that would retest if not poke slightly under 53 xbi and IBB 270.

obviously I do not like this scenario one bit, I rather see impulse strength.. like all trades.

unless biotech can recover (like oil) after achieving a swing low under 56 XBI then the initial bullish count of finishing a wave ii correction and back up we go can still be had.

^

I am still hanging on hope that biotech will rally here just under 56 given that in EW terms, after price moves or completes 5 waves, it typically retraces to the previous wave 3/4 zone and often even slightly breaking below the previous wave 4 (which is under 56)

so let see if EW can succeed here.

confirmation that our bullish count remains in tact is to see xbi recover back above 56.5 and ibb 280

I set a stop order that takes me all the way down to the EW scenario SilverRex just charted. I'm hoping this is the bottom of wave c, otherwise if it continues to drop off ill take the rest of my remaining (meager) profits on LABU. I cashed out 1/3 yesterday so really nothing to complain about, I was just all geared up for a big breakout.

I really should set a higher stop for part of my position in this volatile stuff, as I would have been happy to see part of my position out the door at $36 after coming back from that meeting.

heads up as oil's monthly contract is about to roll over which will affect my oil charting. last time was on the 21st. when ever this happens, oil typically pulls back to fill the gap.

would be nice for Meg to hit 8.00 in the morning tomorrow (take profit) and buy back low

considering next month's price is above 42 right now. once the current month expires, price will be above 42+, and possibly can move a bit higher then fall to retest 42 as 42 will become support.

it 'may' be a good place for exit and entry. assuming tomorrow's market opens high

SilverRex
04-19-2016, 03:18 PM
a quick look at gdx which tracks gold miners. the final wave V sequence should be ending soon. cant rule out it can still make a higher high if it extends further. once a top is in. I expect the wave 2 correction to finally begin with a bare min to retest the 38% level just above 19. (remember how price tends to go back to the previous wave III/IV range?)

obviously I would love price to go lower to the 50 and 61%, but with such strong bullish sentiment, i am at this time not sure if we will see such a great buying opportunity. will see how things go when it comes.

http://i.imgur.com/8vHxRHa.png

also comparing to the last 2 bull market the April-May period are generally weak for metals. So if gold does not make a higher high in the coming days, then the idea is that the 1283 was infact a top and I expect a lower low under 1207 to take place and the correction will then be over.

ok so my oil chart has rolled over as I was saying the last time, price will open high due to next month's contract coming in and typically it loves to fill the gap which coincidentally the worker strike came to an end so so price could sell off.

if price continues to tread lower, the most likely bullish scenario is for price to bounce off the neckline (red) and create a perfect backtest along the 50DMA which is right at or just a tad under 41.00, a more prudent support would be at 40.00 if oil is to remain bullish with upside breakout potential towards 44-45.

oil has tested the 200 DMA the 3rd time, there is a saying, when it hits a certain resistance 3 times, chances are more likely it will break thru,

will see how the weekly oil inventory report will affect the market. while I see any negative news to again give oil bulls a chance to buy low, but I cant imagine if the news is positive what it would do to the market...

The intraday chart for XBI sure looks like a falling wedge. If I happen to be around when volume spikes I may add a short term position.

you are right, which looks corrective. a triangle with a rising support just under todays low is a do or die situation. either we will bounce here, or could suffer more pain. key could be tomorrow as there are another big earning release in the sector

Can somebody explain why biotech can breakout? Biotech companies are so independent of one another...How can the market have an effect on the entire industry?

the upper rising channel is right at or just a tad under 8.00, thinking of using that as a profit taking zone for Meg.to

but here is the catch oil is breaking above 42.5 so it has alot of momentum which means does Meg also break away from this rising flag and straight to 8.5-9.00 now

So... you re-buy out of regret of selling, then you lose money when it falls? Did I understand that right?

I've been there, and it's what's keeping me from doing it right now haha

Just keeps going up for the last month.... talk about catching a falling knife. Any reason why this latest up wave you think is reversing its 8 years of losses?

Haha, yup. I regret that I bailed early and took some meager gains and think what could have been. I spend some time convincing myself the gains represent some kind of big move, and I should get back in.

Get back in, and miraculously this always marks the peak of the move, and down we go

nothing wrong taking profits. its a win win

I am holding for 45 oil as a bare min. yes once a top sets in, it will likely retest the former resistance which will now become support at 42.5

but based on the wave III during the 26-42 run. wave III produced more. so if we measure the last 35-42 run of 7 dollar as wave I, then this wave III should produce at least 7 if not 8-9 dollar to be topping out some where between 45-47 of course with small corrections along the way. then we will get one more wave and possible to test the phychological 50.00 barrier

XBI seems highly indecisive.

It was a bad/stupid day to try pop some quick gains with LABU/LABD for me. Back to my medium term position and going to see if tomorrow brings any positive action.

LABU has now tested $35 twice again. I'd feel more optimistic if it closes north of $35 and is up for the day. Sort of wishing I took all profits when I sold part of my position at $37 in case it makes a sideways move for a prolonged period.

the quick breakdown earlier with XBI diving under 56 was a bit concerning, but it has since recovered nicely which looks like it was a shake out now breaking out of the sloping neckline.

typically a false breakdown follow by a breakout to the other side is the real deal here.

also we've tested 56 so many times in both direction in the last 2 week kinda tells me this number will be very important later. If we do make a good run up from here, I suspect this will be a good support/buy back in the near future.

as you can see.. a false break down follow by a neckline breakout to the opposite side as I write this, we will now see if it can sustain this and our final low has been struck

biogen reports earning before the bell tomorrow and here is an article that suggest the chance for the big company to report a positive earning is very high.

so I expect biotech is ready to move tomorrow

gold turning around and miners are beginning to fall. has the 5th wave top struck? my hope is to see a huge correction take place in the miners so I can load up some time in May.

picked up a small position in hgd with stop below todays low to test my luck

Your right, I didn't think anyone would jump on me for the 8 year history. It keep going up from when I bought it last month. I always think short term, get in, get out. %38 is the longest I've held stock. This is the short term investment thread right?

Definitely, and its solid you doubled up on them. Just wondering if why they would keep gaining or if they will go back to their prior trend soon

The real question is, will it be able to break past the ~57.60 resistance level? I'm considering taking profits there (assuming it reaches it).
