What will the indexes return? Tsx, Dow, sp500, nasdaq etc.

I'm tempted to buy more since things are on the downtrend but I know that Couch Potato strategy dictates that you continue to put in the same amount of money every month whether it goes up or down.

I don't daytrade or own any stocks but all of the Canadian banks are close to their 52w low which has gotten me thinking.

US Market, I'm most heavily invested on Apple, Microsoft. I put some limit order for MS in case it drops to my wanted price after the recently rate increase announcement.

Markets usually reach extremes on both sides of the pendulum. I'd say we're just beginning the down swing but not we're not near a capitulation yet. US economy and unemployment numbers are still red hot. Markets are a forward looking device so it's anticipating a cool down soon. I think valuations will get even cheaper once the feared recession actually hits and the fear becomes not when will the recession come but how bad will it get.

You know its a good time to buy when the thought of buying into something gives you the cold sweats and sweaty palms. Feeling great after buying and thinking you're a genius usually ends badly.

Is it typical for people to move positions back into cash during times like this and buy at the lowest or is it too hard to predict whether the bull run will end?

i personally won't be buying anything until mid-late jan at the earliest... seems like exchanges worldwide are entering the clutches of a bear market and there won't be a huge bounce up anytime soon. so time is on your side, hopefully you can get in at a really low price with patience. another idea is to take your allocation for investment and divide it into say 5 different equally spaced transactions over the next 3-6 months...

i always like FANG stuff but F is looking really sketchy right now, unsure how that will play out. also keep in mind there's a lot of other sectors to consider, financials, utilities, consumer goods etc so good to be broad (but not too broad).

One thing I've found beneficial for short term trading is to watch the charts, and never buy on the way down praying to catch it at the bottom. This almost always leads to overpaying when I have done this in the past. I like to wait for the rebound to start, with an oversold indicator on my charts, then get in. Full rebounds don't generally happen in one day.

TD is definitely looking like a nice buy long term wise though right now. Price is down a lot from where they were. Glad I liquidated half of it when they were high 70's.

I'm pretty new to this so it's interesting to see different approaches to people's successes.

I was watching a Youtube video where Phil Town suggested that you can't always know when the stock will hit bottom so you can put 25% of your cash into it, and if it goes down again, put another 25%, and if it goes even lower, put another 25%.

With your approach to waiting for the rebound, does it offer maximized gains at the expense of safety?

I mean there is no one right or wrong way. That's why I try to never tell anyone how to do things, just offer my own perspective on what I have done and learned.

The way I like to do it just prevents me from riding a stock downwards, which adds time before I can flip it since I have to wait for it to rebound back up to my entry point just to break even. Or even worse, having to buy your way out of it by averaging down. And if I catch a deadcat bounce sort of trend, where the stock props up for a day before continuing down again, I still do have room to average down like this Phil Town that you watched said to do.

Doing it this way gives up a bit of potential return, by never catching the absolute bottom. However even if you're buying on the downtrend it is very hard to catch the absolute bottom anyway. So I feel like it evens out in the end return wise. It just adds a layer of safety I feel.

If you're new, TheChartGuys on YouTube have some videos on basic charting. But the MACD is one that short term traders use quite frequently. It would be worth your time to read up on that. It gives you an idea of when a stock is being oversold, therefore the most likely scenario is a rebound correction in the short term when overselling is going on, buyers see a value purchase and move in causing the price to rebound. Weed stocks have been killer for this since it has been all hype and fear trading for the past couple years.

What sort of swings are you trading on? We definitely don't see the seasonality swings like we used to years ago, but I imagine you can do ok on a 3x leveraged ETF if you're really watching it. I know a guy that lost like 5 million dollars trading NG futures years ago. Shorted it hard in winter time, and the price never dipped in the spring. Eventually it got so bad the trade commission stepped in and froze everything to liquidate whatever they could.

The entry point into MEG would be after Q4 earnings since everyone had a bad Q4 and I expect it to dip a bit more. MEG shareholder rejection of the $8.50/share bid tells us the market expects MEG is worth north of that. MEG's price was $8.03 at close on Sept 28 before the bid announcement, so there is a good chance at a 40% gain depending on what the oil price does.

Oil was substantially higher end of sept then it is now.

WTI was, but WCS tells the better story here.
WCS was $30.62 on Sept 27, and Jan 17 it is $44.51. 200ma is $8.79 (duration of the bid was 105 days).
Looks oversold to me. This stock follows oil closely so be fully aware when making decisions.

Doesnt matter. Most investors dont know the difference. Plus tons of lsrge money moved out of the cdn sector over last 6 months. Dont see the market going anywhere until wti goes up regardless of the narrow differentials now.

The lack of follow through on MEG today from yesterday's last minute run-up to $5.50 tells a lot.
It probably will be OK if you want to long MEG, but I think the risk/reward isn't worth it until it hits at least high $4s for a first position.

On an unrelated note, I'm eyeing an APHA entry again sometime soon; hopefully low 8s/high 7s if possible. With lots of buzz surrounding GGB's new offer and website, I think there are a couple catalysts coming down the line.

Feeling pretty good. Shaw is up 10% and TD up 6% since I got into them right before 2019.

I'm small potatoes so these gains are enough to make me happy haha.

Gains are nice. Collect some dividends, buy some more and keep buying the dips. It's great. It's boring but when your balance gets into the 6 figures, any movement is like being at the casino haha

I might have to. I’m quite well invested into energy at this point though, over 40% of my portfolio is currently energy.

Ouch. That is brutal.

Yeah, so brutal that it's allowing me to shop for my next supercar.

Keep doing what you're doing bro. There are those of us who prefer to stay positive and be happy for other Beyond members!

Some people just like to haphazardly comment on what is 10% gains on 30% of your portfolio.

What do you guys think of Disney? I was thinking about them today because of their live action movie releases this year. (Dumbo, Aladdin, Lion King)

So I did some googling and I guess they also jacked up their parks ticket prices too and they also have that new Star Wars attraction opening this year.

FOX deal likely closes end of this month too.

I dumped Disney after the price was propped up on all the FOX purchase news. They have aspects of the company that are good and profitable, then they have aspects that drag them down. I definitely wouldn't consider them a short term investment.

TD is back up in the 70's now. I shoulda bought more around Xmas time but hindsight is 20/20.

I'm just wondering if the market will support it from here on out because analyst expectations say it could hit 80 sometime in 2019 and/or be a good rebound year for TD.

Either way, I think it's a good long term hold so I just have to decide if I want to go long or make some swing trades on other securities.
