Hey man, if you don't mind me asking how much are you getting charged for 5000 share transaction? I am getting charged $29 for any buy/sell transaction under 1000 shares won't let me buy more and i am with TD waterhouse, what is everyone using, may be there is something better for me!???

I am going to cry again of course over missing the boat. I had to cash out stocks yesterday in the morning for a large purchase. I had been holding TLM for a while, and bought it when it was 11's and 12's. Then it dropped, and so I held as long as I could making trades along the way hopefully timing dips and rallies to offset my losses. I actually bought $10k more worth of shares when it was 9.39 and 8.40 (in the same day) - but because I needed the money knowingly for this purchase. Right, so I bailed on it early for what I bought when it was low because I really had to have the money safe and secure. And then I had to sell yesterday as I was going out the door and sold my remaining shares at $10.39.
If I would have been able to hold until 2PM or so today, I'd have made about $4,000.00+ in profits. Instead, I had to trade my ass off for the last two weeks risking a lot of cash just to wind up losing $111.78. Arrrrgh!
And so, I cry and bitch and complain. ;)

I've changed my strategy for alot of stuff now. I don't worry about missing the boat I just worry about not falling off haha.
I take profit wherever and whenever I can now, even if its $100 after commisions I'll take it, and so far with this strategy I have made more money buying and holding and watching something sky rocket then plummet to a loss again.
Sucks to hear Z_Fan but you'll make up for it somewhere else.

I sold my YRI at 6.50. Don't feel too bad, I was watching Fast Money the other day, and they gave it a good pat on the back, I think that might be why it's still going up. I plan to jump back in if it ever goes back below $5.... a super solid stock.

"Veteran contrarian commentator Dr. Marc Faber maintains that physical gold should be held outside the United States and is also now recommending junior gold exploration stocks. This is one of the best short commentaries on the state of US capital markets I have seen in ages. He sees a ‘very strong rebound’ for gold explorers which have been ‘hammered’. US stocks will rally further he maintains, at least for a short while. In January to March next year you must get out as the economy will implode, he adds. "
I also agree with the amount of money printing happening, watch after the G20 meeting weekend, we will see a very strong rally, it looks as though DOW has a positive divergence just waiting for a downtrend breakout
oil seems due for the same setup as well.
I wont be surprise the rally started will bring DOW back to 10-11k, then comes Jan-march which the biggest sell off will begin
from Marc Faber's interview, it sounds like anything holding in the US isnt a good idea, and points to physical gold. But at least all gold stock should benefit along side with the coming rally. then I will sell and look for ways to counter the weaking US dollar.
Anyone want to start a thread to where to buy Gold bullion :)

Don't get me wrong, I think Gold is headed upwards over the next 6-18 months, but all those Gold Bulls being quoted are really only seeing a small part of a larger equation. Gold is a great hedge, and a great play right now (imho), but it does not create cash flow (ie: equities), and therefore is not entirely fool proof.

yup, I think the market has put in the bottom so buy low and sell high. gold tested the 38% retracement yesterday at around 773 and is now holding.
look for a big rally for the entire market for the next few weeks leading up to new year. Then take caution (especially) if DOW makes it way back near 10-11k
http://goldseek.com/news/2008/12-2gt/2.jpg
as you can see worse case scenario, DOW could be headed to 4000, notice the red box how there was a blip upwards and everyone thought things are back to normal. Well then it went south like no tomorrow. I see similar pattern unfolding, first a huge rally, then get the fcuk out.

hey, for those that trade HGU
is this fund safe other than the fact that it can gain and loose twice as much because of its leveraged abilities?
I ask this is because I've always traded stock and index, but with gold on the verge (IMO) breaking out to the upside in the next 6-12 months I would definately consider taking a position in HGU because of its potential for twice the performence.
My question is, are there any additional fees or penalties that come with the Horizon Beta Pro funds? or just treat it as stock?
I'm also curious to see if its better to invest in HBU (which is more directly connected with the comex gold price rather than the 10 or so gold companies that may in a way be a higher risk play during such volatile enviorment)
HGU experts please come forward :D
I'm also taking notice that Horizon BetaPro mangement continues to add more funds in their group. And it may not be such a bad idea to look at the HDD(US dollar bear), HAU(soybean, wheat BULL) when the time comes.
The same question could be had for an oil play. Would anyone of you rather put your money in HOU (bull for oil price) or HEU (bull for oil sand companies such as encana and suncor)
biggest reason is I like how it is canadian dollar traded, therefore I can exit all my US dollar account and starting building my profolio away from the US currency, its only a matter of time when it starts to drop, the last thing I want is having to come out on top in a few years only to give it all back because of the exchange rate (unless Canada starts allowing us to use the US greenback for goods haha never going happen right)
i've just pre-registered my TFSA yesterday, so comes Jan, its lock and load.

More info about the ETF HGU.
MER of 1.15% (which is quite high for an ETF)
Management fees: Like a mutual fund, your costs include fees for managing and operating the fund. This is called the Management Expense Ratio (or MER).
Since you're very bullish on Gold I think this is your best bet instead of picking out individual companies. The exposure is great and once you begin seeing the pattern that this forms it's somewhat easy to trade.
If it goes below 7.50 today I will probably pick up another chunk, if it falls below 7.00 then I'll be loading up on it with all cash on hand.
Markets look bad today with more job cuts, and more bad housing news. Plus RIM is making a hostile bid which is driving it's price down.

ExtraSlow
12-03-2008, 10:13 AM
My understanding of how and MER works on an ETF, is that when they make profit on a transaction, like selling the underlying equities, then for each $100 they made in profit, they will take $1.15 out before reinvesting the $98.85 in the next transaction.
It's not a direct fee that you pay as a person who owns the ETF, but it's a drag on the performance of that Fund.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty new at this myself.

I think ExtraSlow has it right, as for us the buyer/seller the 1.15% MER is worked into the price of ETF's so basically treat it like a stock and don't worry about the MER unless it's paying out a dividend in the form of stock reinvestment.
Someone can probably provide better insight on this but from what I understand the MER on an ETF is factored into the price of the ETf.

yeah ive always traded the USO fund, then again its in a US fund so the HOU is definately attractive alternative,
the only thing is I think oil has a bit more to go at least till 40 dollars before I will take my 1st position, then I will probablly have to save some money on the side line in case it shockingly heads to 20-30 dollars. otherwise (as I have read some where) if you got caught that it dip first before rising, I could very well find myself down even if oil price were to regain back to my entry point. I guess that is the down side to this vehicle.
Between HOU and HEU anyone have a comment as to which is a better play? same witgh HGU and HBU, wouldnt HBU be a safer play because it tracks close to the comex price?

gold is in a channel, continues to test the key support of 773, a loss in this fight would send price down to 730-740 and if 681 weeks ago was the real bottom, then I suspect there will be alot of buying around this area and so will I with cash standing by :)

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

I'm profit taking my 400 shares of HOD and calling it a day.

I don't think you want to do any long term investing with a leveraged ETF. Getting double the daily volatility doesn't mean you'll get double the long term return. In fact, it's pretty much impossible.

I'm a huge fan of AET.UN. A well run company with good assets and high yield. I'm in for a little bit at 15.19 and 16.60 from October.

^By saying long run i mean 6 months or less.
How long would you keep an ETF?

Just to be clear, I have no problems holding any non-leveraged ETF for the "long term."
However, these 2x and 3x ETFs, in my opinion, aren't suitable for anything but shorter term, less than 30 day, traders.
There are some good articles about leveraged ETF's out there. Such as Leveraged ETFs - The Value Destruction Trap (http://seekingalpha.com/article/31195-leveraged-etfs-a-value-destruction-trap)

just have a noob question for you guys, i just bought into a stock at $20.60. i bought in just after the cut-off time, at this price, i understand that the order will go through when the markets open tomorrow.
will the price be the same or can it change?? i did notice that the funds are still sitting in my cash account. and i did get a reference number for my purchase.
this is the first time i didn t make the cut-off.

Did you put the order in at market price, or a limit price? And the cash normally takes 2-3 days to move anyways.

^^i transfered the funds into my cash account to day (right before i made the purchase).
I selected "market price" and hit submit and got the reference number.

the reference number could be for the order itself.. not the actual transaction. all i can say is check later tonight and if its there then it will tell you what price u got it for...
if its not there then it will buy it at opening price 2morow.

Check the order status and activity on your account. If it hasn't gone through you can still change or cancel the order.
$40 oil is definitely possible. Once it breaks through that, $35 is possible too. That's why you have several entry points, if possible haha Yeah most of us are trying to pick the bottom so we can ride the wave back up.

thanks guys, i bought into cos.un. I looked at the historics (opening and closes), it looks like the close-open price are very close to each other within cents (last nights close was the same as today s open).
my status says "pending"
looked like the markets took a hit today, that s why i jumped in hoping that the tsx will recover tomorrow (crosses fingers).
