Tough question, after the year the market has had its tough to think things are going to stay hot, if your not too market savy I would head to your bank and have them profile your risk tolerance for a mut. fund.
Dont know much about financial stuff at all...any recommended books to start learning? There were just too many out there and I couldn't decide which good books to buy (or online reading material)?

I would prefer to answer this in my question thread so others can see it but in any case, depending on your level of education to this point a decent start would be the canadian securities course. Even if you don't want to pass or take the test the books are quite useful for entry level finance.

You might want to talk to your broker and see what kind of tips they can give you. Like pinoy says, on your spare time try taking the CSC.. I'm telling you now, the course is intense.

A place on 16th avenue (small financial place) is giving 4.5%, but you have to lock it in for 5 years. It's pretty worthless.
I locked in at First calgary at 10% for 5 years in 1999 - those were the good old days.
Yeah I can get 5%, i'm looking for something a bit more.
man, i got some really hot stock tips right now, but not having my CSC i can get in a lot of trouble for offering advice. Do some research on a company that you have interest in, start an account with a discount brokerage and start investing. Learning on your own is the best way, i will have my Finance Degree at the end of April, but almost everything i have learned is through personal experience. One such discount brokerage you can try is Action Direct through the Royal Bank, but you'll first have to be approved. Try your local Bank branch as they will likely have services to offer you similar to these.

There are no issues with recommending stocks, you can't get into trouble. If you had your CSC and you started giving tips to people, claiming that you were certified you would probably get into even more trouble. Post your hot stock, lets see it...
The problem with trading your own portfolio is that you have to have enough money to cover your fees, trading a small account is tough.
Aber, mines diamonds in the NWT, ownership of 40% of Diavak partnership. Expectations that their kimerlite pipes hold nearly 10% of the worlds diamonds. 2 major player's trying to buy them out as they can't afford to let this little company become a major player in this market (de Beer's and Rio Tinto). They have already made contracts to sell diamonds to Tiffany's (and already sold some). Canadian diamonds are of the best quality.
Ticker: ABZ on the TSX
Gonna retire when the stock hits $60.00 :)

Here is a better buy. BME on the TSX they have a 1000BOE/day Nisku well shut in until tied into facility. They are drilling two more wells on the same play. This will more then double their production. Watch the stock hit $2.00 or more by next summer.
They are trading at $1.06 right now...you do the math ;)

Poker's a pretty good investment, just requires time, luck and skill. Almost the equivalent of most stocks anyway.
I made over $2K for the month of November, and to think there is still a few days left. :thumbsup:All cash, no taxes :D
Anyway, what type of returns are you looking for? Immediate or long term?
TD offers a GIC fund based on the major indexes. You are guaranteed your investment and whatever gains the indexes yield.
Another one to consider are income trust funds, can invest in major industries, oil & gas for example, yields dividends of say 10% per month which you can reinvest or accept as cash. You have to do some more research on this one, just something my accountant brought up during our last conversation.
Even more immediate returns is to gamble on stocks but you probably have better luck at the baccarat table.
For really long term investment, moderate risk mutual funds, dollar cost averaging, just invest a little bit per month into a diversified equity portfolio. This is more retirement planning but you can get started on that now.
In the end, I say keep your cash in a 2% savings account and build up a bankrool and we'll go to Vegas for the World SEries of Poker.

so what does everyone think the next big thing is, oil, energy whats shooting up? i think energy will go up but thats just my opinion, kinda broad too
tech sector seems to be making a come back. Poor ol' Microsoft can't decide what to do with it's money (ie avoid more monopolistic/anti trust law suits) so they're just giving the money back to it's shareholders as dividends.
Definitely seeing the rebound of the economy in the us, oil's dropping, good for the average consumer as the price will likely fall at the pumps too. Going to prolly see more money enter the market around this season and into early 05 with people getting x-mas bonuses.
I think Canada remains a great place to invest, many companies worth checking into. Wireless tech is an area i'm keen will make moves, however i'm still holding onto my Canadian mining stocks, good growth and the product is in the ground, it's not like it's going anywhere so pretty secure.

Tyler Resources just did a press release. $3 here we come!:bigpimp:
Tyler Resources Announces Outstanding Drilling Results Including 112.78 meters Grading 1.3% copper, 1.07% zinc and 27 g/t silver at Bahuerachi
CALGARY, ALBERTA, Jan 25, 2005 (CCNMatthews via COMTEX) -- (CCN Mathews)
Tyler Resources Inc. (TSX VENTURE:TYS) is extremely pleased to announce assay results for the last of the December 2004 drill holes including RC2, 3, 4 and 5 as well as the completed portion of core hole #16.
Reverse circulation drill hole 04-RC-2 returned an average grade of 1.3% copper, 1.07% zinc and 27 g/t silver over 112.78 meters, including 48.78 meters grading 1.81% copper, 0.14 g/t gold, 22 g/t silver and 2.03 % zinc in the main mineralized skarn breccia and associated QFP hosted endoskarn complex. Hole RC 2 ended in mineralization.
Further improvements in the methodology used for the drilling and recovery of samples from reverse circulation drilling have been made and the twinning of an additional core hole is currently underway to assess the variability of sample grade between the two drilling methods. As previously disclosed with RC 1, the Company believes that there remains a possibility that results from RC 2 to 5 may still understate the true grade of the intervals drilled due to loss of fines during the sample recovery process. Results for these holes are, however, within the range of values expected for the areas drilled as well as the geological environment and continue to indicate clear bulk mining potential.
This assay data has been reviewed by the Company's independent consultant, Mr. Keith McCandlish, P.Geol., Manager of Mineral Services, Associated Mining Consultants Ltd.
Please refer to the drill hole location plan map attached for the general location of drill holes. A section reporting grades and geology has been completed and is included for section 580 N which includes core hole 04-BAH-15 and RC 3 and sections showing the geology and grade distribution for RC 4 and 5 will be prepared and released when core drilling of those sections has been completed. http://www2.ccnmatthews.com/database/fax/2000/125tys_maps.pdf
Field work has recommenced with core drilling as well as reverse circulation drilling under the new drilling and sample recovery protocol. Samples will be shipped in batches as drilling progresses and further assays are expected by mid to late February.
The Qualified Person responsible for the design and implementation of the Field Program as well as the preparation of this news release was J. P. Jutras, P.Geol., and President of the Company. The work program was carried out with the participation of Dr. Shane William Ebert, Ph.D, P.Geo and Director, and Mr. Brent Gonek, B.Sc, Geology, G.I.T., consultants to the Company.

This stock reminds me a lot of RIM, albeit on a much smaller scale. The range in which it travels on each day is enough to make money quite easily, or alternatively lose it (if you have enough money to invest).

haha you're right actually. I took 89coupe's advice on BME, and it's doing incredibly well (for me, anyways, especially since I was very leary about investing in small companies). I am still not convinced about Tyler, but after I saw the posts here, spoke with 89coupe a bit, and did some research, it seems that its an okay move. Hey Weapon_R,
have u looked at what Burmis is trading at today. ;)
If you want in on all the other tips, let me know.
I have a stock tip thread open on my site but I also have some others that are a little more high risk but as of late have been doing very very well.

I'm watching it daily :)
I'm very tempted to sell right now. Once it hits $3 i'll triple my original investment..
What did you do with TYS? No real movement as of late.

I'm selling some at $3.00 just so I can buy all my new car goodies. But I'm holding the majority for the long term. This stock will be $5 this time next year.
I'm still holding my Tyler, waiting for the next results.

my dad is a contractor for them...thank god for stock options.
Wanna follow an interesting company check out IMA Explorations. They're a silver mining company with a potentially huge deposit in Argentina. Picked up this stock a long time ago and been sitting on it for a couple of years now hoping that their pending law suit will soon go away.
IMR (ticker symbol) trades on TSX-Venture
