Yeah can I buy a individual Kobe steak to my size? Previously at AGA to get any of their best beef, I had to buy a whole section as a minimum order. That's impractical for individuals unless, people can find 4-5+ people to split the order. To buy a whole section of 'real' Kobe beef, would cost me several thousand dollars.

Overrated Like the chop house.

I'm quite certain the kobe beef you are eating at any restaurant locally is not the real deal and most likely the cheap American version.

I had real Kobe when I was in Thailand, it's nothing like the "Kobe Beef" that they have here. The stuff here is definately NOT authentic, regardless of what restaurant you go to here.

And ya, the price is the telltale sign. For a 7 ounce steak, the going price is around $200-300US for Japanese Kobe.

True Kobe beef (Wagyu cows actually raised in the Kobe region of Japan) is rarely the real deal anywhere outside of Japan.

In North America Wagyu cattle is cross bred with Angus cattle (so they can survive a more extreme climate) and then raised with a Kobe style diet and lifestyle.

That's a bit much, I think.
I paid about $170 for an 6-ounce or so steak.

And it was a pimp restaurant too, 52nd floor of this building in Shinjuku, with our own private chef and window view overlooking the city.

But agreed, you won't find it here. Tried "kobe beef" in New York city, and it was crap too, so I don't know if it'd be in Calgary.

That looks insanely good. I don't think I could bring myself to spend that much on a steak tho haha.

The beef can be exported, but any genetic material that can be used to clone the animal cannot since it is of japan's national treasures. There is currently a project in Alberta going on to try and recreate the experience using Alberta beef.

I know there is one type of beef that is considered better than kobe but its much lesser known ( I believe its french, it has a french sounding name at least)
