I'm currently considering on buying a "brand new" car, which has 75 kms, from a dealership. Anybody know how many miles/kilometers can a car have and still be called brand new?

Should the car be labelled as a demo car then, and should have a discounted price?

Had 6 on ours when we drove it home. I've heard stories with a few hundread KM's up to over 1000.

My dads car had 700km on it and was still considered new, but he negotiated $20000+ off the price.

I guess 75 kms is fine. Not sure about 500 kms and up though. I'm just concerned that it doesn't get broken in properly. I tried searching AMVIC's website but had no luck.

Also keep in mind sometimes manufacturers take random inventory off production for sample road tests. The local dealer have removed the sticker from the manufactuer saying along the lines of: "Dear customer, in order to maintain a high quality of standards, this vehicle has been choosen for random quality control. Therefore, xx miles were accumlumated to ensure your enjoyable driving experience, blah blah" (or some PC crap like that, usually on driver' window)

So yea, 75km is pretty low to be new.

I've seen anywhere from 4 to 400kms on a brand new car. Like Tomco said, no abuse or test drives, just moving cars to offsite facilities, or sometimes as a showcase car at an offsite location.

A car is still new as long as it has its "new vehical inspection sheet" or NVIS paperwork. Milage dosen't matter, or year. I remember reading a story about how a truck was forgoten in the back of a lot for a couple of years. It was sold as a new truck.

In a few of those OOP threads, I recall a dealer can still sell a car new and w/o OOP to another province with the NVIS and under 5000kms.

If I have time I'll find the thread.

Yeap, as long as the car isn't registered, it can have 1000 KM and still be considered a new vehicle, once its registered, it loses its new vehicle status and has to be sold as a used from what I was told

And its New Vehicle Information Sheet

I don't know if there is an actual KM limit. I think the key is that it's never been registered / sold by the dealership. I know there is a difference though between "new" and "demo". I'm guessing that again it has something to do with the ownership issue, not the km's.

Had 12 kms on the WRX, 7 kms on the Forester.

Technically the dealer is suppose to do a PDI which includes a test drive.

I saw my STi come off the truck. But it had 75kms when I got it. They said it had to be test driven. I am pretty sure the GM and the sales guys went for a rip. haha.

My 335 showed up at the dealer with 1 km and I got it with 6kms. that is a new car.

My car had 60kms on it when I got it but they drive it on a track to break it in off the factory floor so it didn't raise any concerns. My G37 had 8 kms on it or so when I took delivery, so I know they didn't really touch it. Main thing is there are different circumstances to each car, but if it causes you concern just ask about it and see if the response is reasonable.

I know a dealer selling a car to another province new with less than 5000km is true, so obviously some mileage can be put on a car and it's still considered new if it's unregistered with the NVIS.

What? You post the weirdest shit.

You still say your cars are new in your profile. Idiot. The amount you drive 17th to get noticed put's you over 30KM.

Wow. 5000km? That seems like a lot to still be considered new. But I guess it matters more on if it was registered.

Obviously you wouldn't take delivery of a car with 5000km unless you knew about it before purchasing.

I'm sure the price would reflect the milage but for the sake of discussion, a car is still new as long as it hasn't been registered.

Kind of like asking the definition of a virgin, a car with over 50km on it would not be virgin to me. From the ship to the transport truck, from the truck to the car lot. Anything beyond this is a demo/used. IMO.

Had 20 on my civic and I think 15 on my accord, so, I'd be surprised to see something over 75.

It all depends on the dealership if they have a test drive units or not then lots of the cars will have under 50kms otherwise as in where I work the managers believe in the customer test driving the vehicle they like and selling that vehicle to them

Ericksen Infiniti , we use to have entire units just for demo/test drives but then Go Auto bought us and took ownership and got rid of that concept so now every vehicle is getting miled up

Is it the same with bikes? I think it would be pretty hard to ever buy a car with 0 on the odometer, but my buddy just picked up an 09 gsxr 750 with 0km on it. How can that happen? Was it trucked in on a pallet or something?

probably on a bike you can just push it around the lot or hop on it and walk it.

wouldn't make sense to put a car in N and push it so 0km on a bike is plausible :dunno:

It would be nearly impossible to get a car with lower 5 KMs on it as once it comes off the carrier, it needs to get PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) by a mechanic and taken on a mechanical road test and when the vehicle is purchased, you have to fuel it up somewhere so getting a 0KM on a vehicle is kinda hard.....not to mention if you bought dealer installed 3M, undercoating/tint, alarms etc, there will be additional mileage put on if everything is not done in house

I never had a new car over 50km.

Kinda OT but related...

Do any manufacturers preset odometers to say 999,995 km so it rolls over to show a very low reading when the customer takes delivery?
