View Full Version : Cant connect to websites

Cos

Okay this is driving me nuts. I cant connect to certain websites that are KNOWN to be good on other peoples machines (my work machine too) and I dont know why.

I used to be able to connect to it and now it appears like it would if the server crashed. 98% of websites appear fine. What the hell?

Could be blocked by your provider - TELUS did this in 2005, blocked all kinds of web sites during their labour dispute just to stop public access to one specific web site.

Next up, did ya do a tracert to see where things go awry?

This happened to me with shaw when I was with them (about 6 years ago). I couldn't get on National Geographic, a forum I was a regular at, and a few other sites. NO ONE at shaw could help me. Everyone kept insisting it was at my end, even though I hauled my computer to my inlawshouse, and everything worked fine there.

That was my final straw with them. I got telus within a week. Wish I could help you, but no one ever at Shaw ever could explain it to me.

You, as a personal account, mean little to SHAW. If the big boys want to block something or are told to block something, then they will - they can plead ignorance afterwards.

IIRC, go to Apps.. Utilities.. Terminal ??? Anyway Terminal is the one you want, then "traceroute website.whatever.com" then post the results and we can compare.

See below. Don't bother with the -f 3 (not sure if it's supported on Mac) and you can hit CTRL-C once it starts to * * *

Hahaha! ok, well, at least your DNS matches mine, which is good. Are you behind a router? Have you tried resetting your cablemodem, while standing on one foot and howling at the moon? What's the output of "netstat -r" ?? I think Mac does that...

I dont want shaw to care about little ol' me. I guess more what I am wondering would be WHY they would block a small tuning company out of the US's site on little ol' me.

Shaw isn't blocking anything, either your computer or router has its routes screwed up, or Shaw has their routes screwed up. So:

- are you behind a router?
- what is the output of "netstat -r" ?

Yeah a linksys (like that matters, not custom firmware. Is linux tho.

I cant get the netstat to run in terminal.

Plug your pc/laptop directly into the cablemodem, so we can see if it's Shaw or your router that's screwing up the routes.

Check your proxy settings. I'm using Firefox and shaw is my service provider.

I had the problem in July where I couldn't connect to adobe.com, canadapost.ca and even shaw.ca. Tweaked the proxy settings and that fixed the problem.

okay good news... sort of.

Both computers in my house dont allow access to the site. As for the cable. Same story. Tried both the cable to the router and the modem.

ran terminal again in case there was a problem/change.

Call 310-SHAW, explain the "no route to host" thing to the TSR, tell him you've tried it from two PC's and without the router. If he doesn't get it, ask for TSR-2.

That's pretty odd, if both your PC's can't access it when connected directly to the modem... Not sure what to tell ya... is one of the computers Windoze? Try Start... Run... "cmd" then do "netstat -r" and post the results...

They do, but we already established the DNS is fine...

Cos, open up the terminal on a Mac and do a "route show" or "route -v show", I believe that's the command equivalent of "netstat -r" on a Smackintosh :)

Normally this message is seen when there is a problem with the routing tables, but in your case I believe the problem is your ad-blocking software. Other people have had this problem with the Peer Guardian 2 ad-blocker. If you have this installed try disabling it to test if it is the cause of the problem. If everything works you can play with the settings to relax them a bit.

holy fucking shit. I have peer guardian. Good call, I will turn it off and see.

Maybe while your here I can ask this, I was told that peer guardian isn't an add blocker but more a tracer blocker so that when you download things people aren't able to trace your IP, is the claim true?

I am not terribly familiar with PeerGuardian, but after looking at their site I believe it only prevents outgoing connections to blacklisted websites.

So while it would prevent those specific sites from obtaining your IP address, it would not prevent other sites from seeing it (such as beyond.ca for example).
