View Full Version : Avoiding PST when "Importing" a vehicle from Quebec?

Hey folks,

I'm wondering if there is a way to avoid paying PST on a car purchase (CPO vehicle from a dealer). If the dealer is in Quebec and they shipped the car to me here in Alberta, would they be able to leave off the PST just like when you make most other purchases from provinces with PST and have them shipped?

Obviously I would need an out of province inspection, and have to pay for shipping, but saving the PST would be worth it - so much more choice there!

You have to pay it up front then apply for a rebate.

Curious, why Quebec? More selection with regards to what? Pricing is good I take it?

Now that you know how to avoid the PST, make sure you avoid all the crappy salvage vehicles that are dumped in Quebec.

There is a ton more selection and the prices are definitely a few thousand less - even in the $20,000 price range.

(For example, a 2006 Jetta 2.0T for $17k)

Quebec also because they don't have front licence plates to ruin the look of the car.

Many of the vehicles on our lots come from auctions in Quebec anyway - plus I'd only be looking at those with warranty.

I wouldn't touch a car from Quebec with a 20ft pole. With or without warranty.

DO NOT BUY A CAR THAT HAS SPENT IT'S LIFE IN QUEBEC! There's a reason they are cheap. Resale value is lower there because the cars don't last as long. You will get body panel rust within a couple of years and the undercarriage and suspension completely rusted. A couple of years there with their humid weather and widespread road salt is plenty enough for the cancer to start and it will rust everywhere and your cheap Quebec car will be worthless when you try to sell it here.

Its easy to spot Quebec cars brought here even if the body panels are still clean the undercarriage, control arms, suspension, exhaust will have rust on a new car that we don't see here for 5+ years. Popping the hood will reveal rusted bolts all over the engine bay, shock towers, etc.
