View Full Version : Something you did back in the day about cars to piss off your parents

How many of you have parents that are completly against cars?

It got me thinking, how many people on this site actually went ahead of their parents, (mother, or father)'s saying no you cant have this car or no you cannot buy this and that? For me i went ahead to do everything i possibly could to piss off my dad because hes a grouchy old fuck and now hates cars, so i brought home a mustang without his permission or knowledge:D BTW that didnt go too hot, but i was more than happy to see him get mad ;)

Share your stories! i wanna see what you did against your parents wishes about getting cars or anything in general!

My parents love cars. I showed my mom the lime green Corrado with glow in the dark wheels FS in the marketplace, and she thought it was awesome!

My parents don't believe that I know anything about cars so they always get that "You're going to blow yourself up and come crawling to us for money" look when I tell them what's new with it.

He still doesn't know I've put about 4G in this summer. I'd just rather avoid the lecture. When I had to drive him to the dealership to get his car I tried to stay away from hitting boost so the BOV wouldn't release, but I hit a few times.

"What's that? What's wrong with your car now?!"

"There's something wrong with the intake."

"Figures..."

(didn't help that BOV opened under/in a tunnel/overpass.)

Hahah my dad thinks my N1 looks stupid, but he loves the car... Back when I parked it last year before winter I would always catch him taking it for drives... and he's always asking to wax it... But he always calls it a lemon and says it's a piece.

And finally: "My car's making a wierd noise, can you look at it this weekend?"

When I let my dad drive my car, hes constantly boosting and hanging onto gears too long. Sometimes he even mis-shifts and grinds between 3rd and 4th. I have to remind him to let the turbo time after hes driven it!

With my last car, he took it for a drive one day, then a couple days later I noticed a flat spot on a tire. I confronted him about it and he denied everything. It was definately him...

I baught an old 5 litre almost 2 years ago, engine was completly built internally and spun into 3rd gear

That's lame. I would have been choked. I had sort of the opposite experience.

I never really pissed my parents off with cars. The first $4,000 I saved when I was 18 for a car was used to buy a 350 small block swapped 3rd gen Camaro. It was my step-dad's idea LOL. The salesman we bought it from couldn't tell his arse from his elbow, and just assumed it was a v6. After he said that, my step dad popped the hood, saw the motor, shut the hood real fast, and said "we'll take it". I felt like such a badass haha. I miss that car.

Never had this problem. My dad has always, since I was born, owned a Supra.

When I drove home with my S2000 CR, he didn't like it, but he'd always take it for drives "to put gas in it for me" or I'd find him washing it during the day.

For me it was stereo gear. My parents had cars with the basic AM/FM radio in it, and were happy with that. When I show up one day after a spending spree with enough stuff to put a 15" sub in the back of my car. My parents were pissed that I spent all that money and all I was going to do was "Start an electrical fire" or "Make myself deaf by age 30". I had so much fun building boxes for that car, sealed, ported, slot-ported. I never knew there was so much room in the back of a Hyundai Excel.

In the end though, my dad had me secretly put a deck and 6x9's in a box, in the back of his little Suzuki Samurai. Didn't want to upset my mom.

My primary reason for keeping the thing looking relatively stock is so they can't tell how much of a money pit it is, haha. The new exhaust tipped them off this summer though. I'd rather them know about the car then the bikes...

Dad used to have a Torino, now has a loaded Miata and more speeding tickets than I have, so he can't really complain I guess. Mom just shakes her head.

My dad, instead of fixing the problems he had with vehicles hed let the problems go as long as possible.

Eg. we owned a Chevy Sprint 3cyl wonder car. It developed a bad rear wheel bearing. Bad enough that it sounded like a steam roller after a while, but dad didnt want to fix it because "it still goes from A - B".

So we take the car one night and beat the crap out of it, drive it sideways on empty parking lots with the e-brake, go offroading a bit....until the bearing lets go and the car sounds like its running on rims and loses a lot of oompf

New bearing put in the next day.

in terms of cars as a career "you'll never get ahead in life with garage/gease work, etc..." so I ended up purposely taking all possible automotive courses, autobody, autotech, welding, etc...

I guess in a certain way i purchased my car new to kind of piss of my parents. They were always telling me that i dont apply myself and that i need to do this and that to be successfull.

Spending time under a car was obviously not going to get me anywhere.

Although my career has nothing to do with cars, it has plenty to do with being mechanically inclined and good with my hands. I feel that because i was so interested in vehicles and how they worked that i learned a lot about the way things opperate and developed a thirst for that outside of the automotive world.

So when i purchased my car (and house) it was like an "efff youuu!" to my dad to show him that i was successful and made something of myself despite his negativity.

Enough of that deep thought, time to surf some porn!

You guys have lame parents, lol.

The only thing about cars that pissed my dad off, was when we found a goldmine of a scrap '67 cougar (for parts for mine), I sold the rear window in trade for a side mirror, and $50 (not really knowing what it was worth at the time, and having no internet to look it up).

He was furious, and now I know he was rightly so, as a good condition rear window was worth a few hundred more than that, lol.

All of my parents were car nuts at one time or another. (Mom, Dad and Step Dad).

As soon as I bought my First car (Ford Probe) my Step Dad said I should buy some Jaguar lettering to put on so noone would even try to race me. (Well before the Ricer revolution, 1994) I think he was just trying to keep me safe in retrospect. His old favorite was a 1957 Chev with 450hp

My Biological Dad always looked down on my domestic cars. He was a huge Import fan. He owned a ton of American muscle back in the day though

My Mom never wanted me to own anything with more than 4 cylinders, because it was too fast. She owned a Mach 1 and Chevelle SS and now a G35 6speed sedan.

The one secret I have kept for years is my Bike. They are terrified of the thought of me having one. They've personally been in wrecks or have had friends die on them. I've owned it for 8 years now. I used to have to hide my helmet and jacket when they came to visit.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. But my Dad has taken more of a turn than my Mom.
I'll buy something, he'll say "how much was it?" I'll tell him a price that was a few hundred less than I got it for and he'll shake his head. Then when we go see family or friends, he'll say "Go show them your *insert part here*" and be all proud about it.

hahahaha my Mom thinks it's still ridiculous and a waste of money.

Not about any of my cars (because my parents never really cared about them), but I remember going over to my folks' place and having one them look out the window and ask, "Where's your car?". I said I didn't take the car and pointed to the motorcycle. Neither of them said anything, which is how I knew they were really disappointed.

My parents always supported my car purchases. Mostly because I didn't pour money into shit cars like a lot of my friends did. First car was a 2001 Accord that ended up with a turbo, second was a 1998 Explorer that has been the most fun vehicle I've ever owned. Recently I bought a 2004 RX-8, dad thought it was awesome, mom fell in love with it, now I'm selling it so I can get another truck. As much as I love cars, my life dictates 4WD and towing 7500 pounds.

I never did anything with the intention of making my parents mad but ended up doing it indirectly. My brother ruined my parents' cars with shitty tape decks and old 6x9s, eventually getting the cars really messed up one night by a thief that took everything. My brother didn't do anything properly so anytime I wanted to do anything to one of the cars once I got old enough the answer was always no.

So one day I took my mom's credit card and bought a JVC KD-LX30 El Kameleon CD player from Ebay for $350 and brought it to a shop to have installed. When I got the car home I had to show my parents how it worked, I got the, "WHAT IS THAT? I DON'T WANT THAT, GET THAT OUT OF THERE!" It stayed in the car and later that summer I spent $1300 on a D-class Rockford Fosgate amplifier, a 12 inch Rockford sub in a ported box, 4 Rockford speakers, wiring and install. Then another $450 on a Code alarm system....and I should clarify that this is all on my parents' car, I couldn't afford one.

I tried to show my dad how the alarm worked but he wanted no part of it. My dad's got a keyring like a highschool janitor and didn't want to put anything else on it so he would leave one by the door to deactivate the alarm before taking the car, he found that annoying. And when I showed my mom what I did to her car by turning up the stereo and letting the subwoofer thump, she grabbed the armrest with one hand and the door with the other hand and screamed, "WHAT IS THAT? WHAT'S THAT BANGING? WHAT'S WRONG?" So I turned it back down and we had a silent drive home.

But then, the day before I moved to Alberta I was removing everything from their car thinking after 3 years they would be happy to finally be rid of my stereo junk and I told my brother he could have the CD player as I didn't have a car in Alberta. He was so happy that he told my mom I was giving it to him and she rushes out into the driveway to yell at me, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THAT'S MINE, I PAID FOR THAT! LEAVE THAT IN THERE!" So I guess she didn't mind it so much after all.

Then I got to Calgary and told them I bought a car for $20,000 and was spending all kinds of other money on it, they just told me to be careful. My parents are visiting me this week and I keep pointing at S2000s telling them I'm going to get one soon and my mom who is always in the front seat this week says, "Where's your father going to sit?"

When I was 16 I had a 78' Honda Civic, and I broke a spark plug off in the head trying to change them.. I took the head off, took it down to Moore's and had them drill it out and put a heli-coil in it. They decked the head for me and I put in new valve seals.

I replaced all the top-end gaskets, new timing belt and water pump, got it all back together and timed and it was running great. I was finishing it up, (putting the air cleaner back on the carb) when my dad came into the garage and said:

"Goddammit, why don't you get a car that you can work on! there's no room to work on that thing! American cars are much easier!"

Then I fired the car up and he was  .. when He left for work in the morning I was just starting, and I had it all done just as he got home. He couldn't believe it haha!

He never questioned me working on cars again. Whenever they need work done now I go over and do it for them.

I didn't buy ridiculous cars or anything when I was still living at home. Couldn't really afford it. But parents wouldn't have cared if I did though. They were just happy that I didn't drink and smoke/do drugs/crime and get into shit all the time like most of my peers in similar living situations. Buying a Mustang or something would seem like a pretty harmless thing to them.

Nowadays they are proud when I buy big things. I'm the first in my family to make an above average income, so they want to floss their son a bit :D

They can't figure out why I need to own 5 sport/muscle/exotic cars (well, 6 if count the SLC), when they only own 1 4 door for themselves, hehe.

Oh yea, the one thing that pisses off my dad is the fact the SLC's carbon fiber spoiler is about 8 1/2ft wide. He keeps questioning me how i plan to drive with a spoiler that's about the width of a normal laneway, and I just tell him people will get the f*k out of the way for such a cool car it won't be a problem. Then he goes into a tirade about respect on the road and how I have none, etc.... (to which I have to remind him I have 0 accidents/tickets, unlike his 0accidents/4tickets, so I'm like totally a better driver than him, heh)

Oh yea, and he also dislikes the exhaust on the cobra - same reason - respect on the road - says I'm irritating drivers around me with such a loud exhaust. Haha, I say good, let 'em know I'm around! He likes to show me all these articles in the paper where people are complaining about cars with "loud" exhausts....then gets all upset when I say 'f*k 'em, what do I care about some whiney bitches who don't like a little noise'

wen i was shopping for cars with my dad he always said just get a A-B car, like his suggestions consisted of a ford focus or a 4 door cavalier. i laughed like crazy everytime he said that cavalier, we were at jdm dealerships lookin at rx7's 300zx's and stealths, i was just about to buy a 92 r/t stealth wen my dad decided that since the timing belt wasnt replaced it was a no. so i ended up wit a 96 integra rs. he kept sayin no chance in hell ur gettin a turbo or a RHD drive car or else u go get ur own insurance and house. . so he will be very pissed off wen he finds out im buying a 92 toyota soarer in a couple months.

by the way did i mention he drives a 2008 acura TL type s 3.5l v-tech same engine as the nsx and 286 hp and he dosnt want me having a car over 150hp

parents are ridiculous since they almost killed me for puttin my tanabe exhaust on my car and planning on puttin a turbo on it haha

Yeah parents didn't like it when they found out I bought a 240sx, a few years ago lol. not happy at all! and it was on the day of my HS grad haha. more than 2 years later, I still have it, spent too much money into it. but my rents don't really care much about it anymore, they know i'm good with cars and i guess they are content that it was a good learning experience for me. my pops slipped me a 100 bucks after i fixed a timing belt on our Mitsu Galant a couple weeks ago.

mom to my dad: "oh it's just a belt, it's an easy fix right?"
dad: "No timing belts can be quite complicated, shops charge a lot to do them"
mom to me: "can you fix it?"
dad: "of course, he turbo'd his other car, i'm pretty sure he can fix this".

i don't get it, why would a child want to piss off a parent, as if they need pissing off. sending us to this world is already a big burden, why piss them off? get a grip!

Your sig certainly doesn't match your comments. And it's not like we're TRYING to piss off our parents when we were young just because we wanted to do something that our parents did not agree with.

There's a lot I could say about buying things for my car and pissing off my parents.

But the biggest thing car related is when I'm driving and one of my parents is with me, they think I drive too fast and always get pissy.

Also, on the rare occasions when I'm with my mom and she's driving and I tell her to stop sucking at driving, that makes her pretty mad.

I'm still modding the car that I had from back in the day. By now my parents have realized there is nothing they can say to change my mind on how I spend my money on mods.

my idea of being happy is happy and not pissing off anybody around me......and i just think it's not right to piss off parents--car related or not.. period...

sorry if you don't seem to like it, but that's just me. i know there are some parents that are pissed off but they still love their child, but i mean com' on, we can only have 1 parent in our lifetime, i don't see a child adopting a parent. not that i know of..

Parents thought I was absolutely bonkers when I said I want to switch out my broken 4G63 N/A for a 4G63-Turbo from Japan in my old Talon at home in my garage with a serious lack of tools and experience when I was 17 lol ;)

Then when I succesfully completed it (almost a half a year later lol) they couldn't beleive their eyes :D

And then I was told I'm crazy again when I said I want to put in a bigger turbo, fuel injectors, FMIC......... I heard the classic:

That's fine, I don't mind if you're a pushover. Who cares what you want to do (even if it's perfectly legitimate, but others may not view it the same way), as long as it doesn't piss off anyone around you.

Well, I would say majority of parents are like that. And like I said, it's not like we purposely do these things to piss them off.

I must have been lucky because I have 2 parents!

2 parents to piss off..wow.. when i say 1 parent that presupposes it's mom and dad, coz they ought to be 1, right? unless yours are divorced or something

What?..

and it amazes me you're so concerned about not pissing off the people around you, ( as if it's alright to piss people), and you can piss off your 2 parents---and you said not purposely though. well, that's your idea, and who cares what you want to do as well.

For this bit add a bit of a Scouse accent:

Well, I'm usually the one who gets pissed more than anyone I know, and I've never pissed my parents off since I was an early teen.

I originally commented because you made it sound like we want to piss off our parents for shits and giggles and that you don't get why we'd want to do that. Also, I'm bored.

On a sidenote, I don't go around concerned about not pissing people off. I have better judgment than to waste my energy on such a behavior.

Indeed, you are a fine person. that's good to know. nice meeting you here. i guess we started off on a wrong foot because of the title of your thread. and that was my stand. but in reality, i'm not a pushover, i just love my parents, like everyone else does i'm sure.
