LOL did someone steal redlyne's car...

Just to comment on the shot - I personally don't think it works because you can actually see how much motion was introduced into the picture (i.e. the arrow, the other yellow stripes, the pillar in the top right). Just my 2 cents.

First time ever shooting basketball and only third or fourth time shooting sports. They didn't turn out as well as I had hoped...they just aren't sharp.

I was shooting at ISO 2500, F/2.8 and I couldn't get a fast enough shutter speed. Any pointers?

Was shooting in manual, aperture priority kept telling me to shoot at 1/60th. Yeah...right...

Most of them were taken at 1/250th or 1/320th. Autofocus settings were continuous, 51 point manual point selection.

There's your problem for it not being sharp. As for shutter speed, it must be a very very poorly lit gym. You'll have to set up some off camera flashes. You can try bouncing it if its a low ceiling gym or against the wall for shots around the paint. But never direct as players hate that. I have never used flash for sports so can't help you there.

So, on the D300 there's that switch on the back with the three settings. First one let's the camera choose the point, second one let's you choose how you want the camera to track (what I was using and I had it in the center,) and the third one is a single autofocus point. I thought the one I had it one would be the best?

Also, the white balance was annoying...one end of the court was a different cast of light than the other.

Try this for focus settings, I can't remember the last time I've missed a shot that wasn't my own fault using these settings:

AF switch in the middle (single point if the subject is stationary or for subjects with very predictable movement)
AF-C (obviously)
AF-C Priority --> Release (anything else slows your frame rate)
Dynamic AF Area --> 9 if the subject isn't moving too much, 21 if its smaller and/or more erratic
Focus Tracking with Lock-on --> OFF (if this is on it slows focus speed in most situations)

Turn active D-lighting and high ISO noise reduction off to get the maximum burst (18 NEF's).

Make sure you have the latest firmware, Nikon claims they improved the AF slightly.

In addition, some people prefer the AF-ON button to be the only thing that activates AF, so you may want to experiment with that and see if it works for you. It's also handy for re-composition because even in AF-c, if you take your hand off that button, it will stop focusing even if you recompose and press the shutter. Keep in mind though the AF-ON button won't activate VR.

For the WB issue, try taking a picture of a grey card under the lighting, and then apply a global WB setting using the grey card to all your pictures in Capture NX.

Haha thanks...I wish the holes in the cage were just a bit wider though, you can see kind of a white haze around the boarder of the picture, which is just the extremely out of focus cage wiring.

On Saturday I'm supposed to take pictures for a friend's acrylic nail business, so if I get any good ones I'll post them here and you will have something different to look at :)

Thanks. The biggest challenge is definitely the super dirty glass and cage wire. F2.8 and good ISO performance are a must as well. Most of the pics I took were between ISO 800 and 3200. I think next time I'll bring a cloth and some windex to clean the millions of finger prints etc. off the glass...I'll look like a tool cleaning the zoo's glass for them but whatever haha.

I plan on making an entire post pretty soon doing a 1Ds III vs D3x thread. I want to give people on our forum a neutralist view going between the two. I thought it would take me longer to adjust to Nikon but I guess most pro photographers can pick up a camera and learn exactly how to use them quite quickly.

I think one of the most noticeable differences between Canon and Nikon is the flash system. I truly love the amount of control Nikon puts right at your finger tips.

The only one that ended up a little distorted was the one on the far left actually. These girls are all 5"9 to 5"11. It was quite odd for full bridal party to be this tall. Actually now that I think about it the girls were taller than the guys, very backwards lol.

looks like the effects of a wide angle all the way back, like on the edge of fisheye territory.

i like the scenery, fish creek or nowhere close to the city?

quazimoto clearly shoulda pano'd that shit...with a 70-200, at F11, and 400 iso...hand held of course.

shots look great quazimoto, I'm sure the clients will be very happy. Looks like you're making the best of the new camera.

The photo makes the bride and brides maids look funny, its not their fault...lol

If a person can't handle criticism then he/she shouldn't post it ;)

It's easy to critisize a photo that you yourself probably could pull off 89coupe isn't it... Now if you would have let me finish, it wasn't even an edited copy of the photo. They were literally shots I had taken off the camera just to show the couple before they left on their honeymoon. The series I had taken just before this was catastrophic since the one girl didn't want to go in the water at first.

The location of the photos is actually at confederation park. If you go into the middle of the trees there's a nice little creek. Some of the spots look really nice especially closer to the twilight hours.

Now just for you this was adjusted for the lens distortion lol. But yes the girls are actually quite tall. The guys were anywhere from 5"4 to 5"8, it looked very backwards.

This photo has accounted for the slight distortion. Unfortunately I wasn't really able to step back further as I could barely position the lights.

Sorry, I have to agree... the two on the left look distorted, and strangely 2d.
It's not just a classic 89coupe critcism that's completely off base.

edit: was also gonna mention something about the bright spot of grass on the first pic, it's a bit distracting... but i guess these are untouched

Otherwise, the pics look fantastic... amazing that you managed to find a location like that in the heart of the city.

those are some Beautiful wedding pics. Very good idea on the stream and the lighting is perfect too:)

I think part of the issue with the other girls is the lighting. the lighting hitting the girl that I'm assuming is the maid of honor is still quite strong due to her proximity to the bride/lights, while the other bridesmaids are much darker. it really shows up because of the shiny material of their dresses. I still think the shot works, but that's just me.

Well there was actually two strobes firing for it. I had the one on the left side firing at -1.0 and the other firing as normal. It was tricky becuase the bride wanted to do shots in the creek with the girls but she had a french wedding dress and it was quite massive.

All in all I was happy with it and the couple loved the shots. Either way it's a tricky and difficult shot to pull off.

yeah...I woulda gone with a lil more power on the left side...if I knew anything about lighting that is. but I just shoot bikes ;)

Here's a couple of quick shots from last Saturday in Edmonton. I was there to work on the car (#27) not necessarily to take pictures. First time I've shot at ISO3200. Some of the drivers wanted some prints but I have no idea how well they'll look printed, I guess I'll find out

Its sandstone not brick, and even with a regular photo they will look like that. The HDR just accentuates the detail.

the building looks like it has plastic wrap over all its stonework? even in the original exposures? interesting...

And the saturation of the sky is overly fake. I can see wavy lines going through the sky as it has been over processed. Maybe change the the hue of it to a more natural blue.

I agree, but it looks like it was caused by a polarizer ~90 degrees from the sun.

Nah look at the top left area you'll see these wavy lines that go through the image. A sign the contrast has been played with too much.

I think overall it looks nice though. It's interesting how the bricks have this shine type quality.

and I think the wavy lines are just colour space issues, no?

I like all the guesses...LOL...but sorry, none of the above.

Its just my lazy editing, there was a tree in the left corner that I removed.

As for the sky, yeh I could tone it down, but the marketing director of the Lougheed house just loved it the way it was, so I left it ;)

The final edit has no wavy lines in the sky ;)

You got lucky none of the homeless around that area tried to grope you. I love that building, it so nice for weddings but my god the homeless people.

And no that sky is saturated and the contrast is bumped. I think if the hue was change just slightly it would have a more natural blue to it. Like I said overall it looks nice. I had seen a lot of the pictures they use for promotional materials and they need new ones to say the least.

You used a polarizer though did you not? and it looks like you were nearly 90 degrees to the sun? I wasn't talking about the lines (didn't even notice them until quazi said something) but rather the large variation in sky color which tends to happen when under those conditions.
