I'm trying to watch a movie and this error comes up

VLC can't recognize the input's format: The format of 'F:\Movies\Lock.Stock.and.Two.Smoking.Barrels.(1998).HDTV.720p.x264-McFly\Lock.Stock.and.Two.Smoking.Barrels.(1998).HDTV.720p.x264-McFly.srt' cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details.

The .srt file is in the folder and I have the codecs to play the .mkv file that is the movie. Any suggestions?

If you don't care about the subtitles, take the file out of the directory (or just delete it). This is the simplest solution.

There must be something wrong with the .srt file, or maybe the other one. None of the suggestions have worked. Media player classic just freezes up as well.

Check the VLC log, if that doesn't tell you anything then likely the .srt file is screwed up as you already suspect :)
