Reference to this thread. http://forums.beyond.ca/st/278631/contest-free-gas-cards-sponsored-by-tomcopdr/

Contest: Describe, take photos of your past or current home improvement project(s) DONE BY YOURSELF (can be as many that's going on in your life, around your PERSONAL home)

How to win: Contestants SUBMIT their entries (for a period of time), then Beyond members VOTE for 2 winners

Prizes: $50 and $25 Home Depot gift card. (awarded to different member/winner)
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r95/Tomcompany/Past%20repairs/Random/100_3511.jpg

What can I submit? It can be anything relating to the home/garden section here. Examples: You beautiful summer garden, your do-it-yourself (no professionals) tile work in a bathroom, kitchen reno, etc... At the end, it'll be up to members to VOTE. (so the more photos, detail description of how you did it will probably get you more points, as there're no way of regulating cheaters taking photos from a paid professional job, just hope they won't get any votes if it's too vague)

Submission period: Post AND describe your own home/garden projects (can be unfinished, or work in progress, or a constant updated post) from NOW till deadline: Sat, October 3, 2009 11:59pm (Beyond time), 2 weeks

Voting STARTS: (please don't vote before submission deadline, could be more awesome entries coming in) from October 4, 2009 12:00am (Beyond time) till October 11, 2009 11:59pm (Beyond time), 1 week voting.

How do I vote? Such as how do I tell the difference if someone just sumbit photos of a professional's job as their own? Well, it's an open interpretation contest of how YOU (voter) feel about the submission and how DETAIL of a description they present, what materials they used, how they did it, how long they said it took, etc... come on you're a big boy make your own judgement. Also, if you KNOW OF a member who's submiting professional (not their own) project, then just out him/her... I love seeing drama unfold here... I might even personally buy you dinner.

Besides, anyone who can afford to pay professionals would be a LOSER to submit it as their own just to win fifty bucks :thumbsdow

Terms:
- PROFESSIONAL TRADES PERSON can NOT submit projects within their business; come on honor system (i.e. if you install tiles for a LIVING, don't submit a tile project, you can submit your garden, etc...)
- MUST BE CANADIAN RESIDENCE living in Canada.

Sample submissions: (it can be anything, because at the end it'll be up to Beyond members deciding who deserves to be Beyond's handyperson)

Project: Shoe rack (homemade), Storage shelving (homemade)

How I did it Varies lumber, basic power tools (saws, drill), a weekend

MaterialsCombination of scrape and purchased lumber

Project: Carpet tiles in double car garage
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r95/Tomcompany/Past%20repairs/Random/100_3523.jpg

Materials These are RECYCLED, I got them when I bought a commercial warehouse bay... instead of throwing them out, I took them home

How I did it Just lay them down, no glueing (they do shift when I turn car wheels) but future plans are real tiles... razor cutter and trim the tile-carpet piece once I got to wall edge.

__________________________________________________

Project TV cabinet in garage

Materials ALL RECYCLED lumber, we used to be poor but dad built a ping-pong table out of 16"-20" pine shelf boards glued (butted ends) together, with those black folking legs... But as we got older, nobody uses that table (aside from the ball would bounce really weird when it hits the butt ends)... So instead of throwing the lumber/shelf boards out, I built a TV cabinet in the garage.

I also used handles, hinges, screws from different recycled closet, wardrobes, etc...

Project: (on going) Closing up a closet door in living room, using the open space on the other side

Materials Drywall and 2X4, basic home tools

Purpose The closet was built in the living room (TV room), and it's just an odd place for it, and it's hard to fit any couchs in there while keeping the feature of the closet... SO, I decided to "flip it" where I'm enclosing a wall where this closet is, and open the closet on the other side, which is my office.

Future plans Paint wall where closet is enclosed, purchase "L" shaped couch (because it'll just be a wall not a closet), bang some hottie on the "L" shaped couch while watching Just Like Heaven (Resse Witherspoon)

My september project has been my back yard. Dug out about 14 yards of dirt for pathways and a Hot tub pad...

How I did it: And F'n lot of digging! rented a little TaskMaster 44" Bobcat for a day that helped a lot!

Project: Stone retaining wall built, as well as window well. Completed 2 years ago

Materials: Bricks, gravel, sand, angle grinder with diamond masonry blade, large masonry saw, shovels, levels, chisel etc

How I did it: approximately 3-4 weeks. After digging out all the holes I leveled the ground with gravel and a tamping machine.
laying the first row of brick is the most time consuming, you have to use sand underneath the bricks and tap them into place making sure each one is perfectly level.
After the first layer is laid its pretty quick going, taking time to cut the stones with a giant masonry saw where needed.
Building the staircase took some patience but basically the same idea as the first row, always making sure things are level and the ground has been hard packed with a tamping machine so the stones don;t sink.
Back-fill wall the loose gravel to allow water drainage, cut top plates and glue down. I only glued the stairs and to corners of the top plates since none of the other stones can move.

I cant remember exactly but I think it was approximately 40 000 pounds worth of stones. since the house doesn't have a back alley I had to move all the bricks from the front driveway to the back using a dolley by myself.... After 1 day of moving the stones the large dolly i had bent the axle and the wheel fell off!
If I were to do it again i would rip the fence down and get a bobcat in there would have made life a lot easier.

End result (ordered too many stones and had to return them)

Project: Basement bathroom addition

Materials : Floor tile, floor heating kit, toilet, cabinet, vanity.
How I did it : I admit I had a plumber supply and install the shower stall and had the drywall done by others, but I did all the rest myself. I've never installed tile before, this was my first ever attempt. Due to tight space, these are the best angles I can get of the bathroom.

Floor heating mat cut and layed out :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/frozenrice/IMG_2464Large.jpg

I had to chisel out part of the floor to be able to embed the electrical lead for the floor heating into the floor. The bulge in the wiring where the connection on the lead was too fat. Without embedding it, it would made it hard to install the tile flat :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/frozenrice/IMG_2466Large.jpg

Tile installed prior to grouting :

Tile grouted :

Vanity and sink installed :

Shot of the water supply lines and drain (first time doing this to):

Toilet, mirror, wall tile around shower, shower valve trim, shower head, shower door and light fixture installed :

Project: Gas Meter housing

Materials: Cedar, screws, stain

How I Did It: Drew it out a few times, looking for several designs which took me a bit longer then I had hoped. Ended up building this over a weekend. Had to make a base out of paving stone to ensure the bottom was flush and secure. Had a few false 1x1 pieces of wood to place behind the boards/frame this allowed the other front pieces to bite into something. Sanded the entire thing and then stained it with oil based semi transparent.

My favorite parts: Finishing it off, was good to see that the oil based stain works much nicer then the latex crap that is on my deck (you can see in the picture). Also the cover that I made for it allows access to the actual meter instead of having to take the entire thing apart.

Project: Basement Renovation

Materials: Windows, Lumber, Insulation, Plumbing, Wiring, Wiring, Wiring, Heating System, Drywall, Tiles, Paint, Carpet... and various others

How I Did It: With the urging of my fiance and tips from family and friends, this came in on budget but way over schedule.

My favorite parts I ran all the electrical wiring to a sub-panel in the basement, along with the low voltage wiring so I could build an in-wall AV rack (you can see it in one of the pics) so I can have TV/audio/internet just about anywhere in the basement... including a TV on either side of the bar once I get the scratch for a couple LCD's.

There are not too many before pics, since there was a lot of destruction and not much to see, but if anybody wants more after photos, I can snap some pretty easy.

Thanks I would vote myself too  Lifting rocks is not fun... Its hard to capture on film the blood, sweat and tears that went into that wall... haha

Bookems basement reno looks great too, I am making plans to finish my basement and its easy to get discouraged on a large project. Plus all the little things you dont think of end up being the biggest pain...
