AMA plus SCAM

Friend of mine in edmonton told me about this fundraiser for the Kid Sport foundation. basically if you donate $63 you'll receive a 1 year AMA Plus membership which is a really great deal considering it includes 5 free tows up to 100 km. Most tows are like 100 bucks and up now. normally they are 140 I think.....

well, i just bought it, then it occured to me....

This was done through paypal, and it was called a donation. and I was not asked for any information regarding where to send it to and such.....

according to the link, it looks like you're buying an AMA membership for the $63 with only $5 going to kidsport. It's a great deal though.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. At the end I was thinking "wtf? there's no link to fill out an ama form?, great".

I still have a doubt in my head though, I'll be relieved when someone from AMA calls.

A great idea, but they need to change it a little to make it more legitimate looking.

it was not sitting right with me, and i did a bit more research.

I even called kidsport canada and they have confirmed it is not them collecting this.

the alarm bells really went off when i saw the descrepincy between kidsportcanada and this website domain.

I used my Visa, just cancelled it, and can't dispute the charges until they're posted.

A big :facepalm: for me. I knew it didn't feel right, but after having to need a tow the night before (first tow I've ever need in my life), and having to use my sisters AMA, I thought it was perfect timing.

Crap, I just got in this morning and found this e-mail


An online scam currently running on Kijiji invites people to purchase an AMA Plus membership for $63 with $5 being donated to KidSport.

The scam sends people to a professional-looking website - www.kid-sport.ca/fundraiser - where well-meaning people are tricked into purchasing a bogus membership. This scam appears to be limited to Alberta.

KidSport and AMA are actively working to have the scam website removed and to contain any further damage. We are also updating the AMA website Membership main page to alert people. AMA Web Services is working to have the offer and links to a payment site removed from Kijiji and is investigating if the scam appears elsewhere.

On topic, this scam was very well done, all the linking, the graphics, everything. Tik-Tok, don't feel bad, but don't forget, scammers play on the kind-ness of peoples hearts.

The paypal account has been closed and I reported a few of the ads on kijiji.

see, i thought this was legit. many companies will offer their services and a portion of the sale or whatever will benifit the charity or organization.

The Paypal part felt a little wierd, but figguring i had 2 layers of protection with my CC and paypal, so figgured i would try it.

what finally made me come back and dig deeper was how was AMA getting my information when I did not provide it? and when clicking it went from kid-sport to kidsport in the domain...

ah well, it had me fooled at least for a little bit.
