Ok so i need some help and some advice, September 25th 2009 i was pulled over by a police officer for racing, code 115(2)(c), the officer clocked me at 162km in a 100km zone on deerfoot trial in calgary alberta, the officer did not catch the other driver, I have no past demerits at all this would be my first time, the cop told me that i will have to appear in court and explian my actions to the judge on October 30th 2009, i am 20 years old i work in calgary but live in aridire so i do quite the commute so im praying that they do not take my licence but i do fully expect a fine and some demerits, im wondering if anyone could give me some information on what they think my punishment is going to be and maybe some advice on what to do?

Thank you

No worries. Been there as well. Dress well, bring a notebook with your ticket in your hand and and be remorseful. Tell them your story genuinely. If you are genuine, they will cut you slack. They will knock down the $/demerits.

Oh ya. IN B4 the tards who say dumbasss.

POINTTS.

Racing is very difficult to substantiate because there needs to be a set start and finish point, IIRC. You'll likely be able to get this reduced.

You need to be more aware of your surroundings if you're going to be traveling those kinds of speeds. You should have seen that cop well before he saw you.

Also probably shouldn't do 160 KM/H on Deerfoot, that's pushing it - even by my standards.

Do exactly as the cop told you, which is to show up at court and explain your actions.

Here are some guidelines I would recommend to you when in court:

1) Dress nice, shirt and tie. Have the appearance that you are respectful because impressions matter.

2) Be remorseful of your actions. Tell them you know you shouldn't have sped that quickly on Deerfoot and you know that you have endangered the lives of people by doing so. Acknowledge that it was very stupid of you and you won't do anything like that ever again.

3) This is important: Also mention that you have no prior loss in demerits as well (first offense), which will help. Again, emphasize that this was a one time thing and you feel lucky you didn't cause an accident from your stupid stunt.

In combination of being respectful, remorseful and having no prior convictions, the judge may reduce your ticket to something much better.

Personally, if I was in your situation and it was a first offense, I think I would be able to represent myself as described above and wouldn't need POINTTS (very pricey)

You also appear before a gentleman in a small office. It is not a big scene as you may think. Learn from this error :)

Instead of points, how about use that guy, Brad Lawson who was mentioned in another thread? (403)467-7228, couldn't hurt to talk to him about it, could be a cheaper alternative to points.

If convicted of racing, especially at those speeds, imo you are likely to receive a suspension.

If you actually were racing, then I think you need a suspension to smarten you up.

You also appear before a gentleman in a small office. It is not a big scene as you may think. Learn from this error.I think this is a Part 2 offence and requires a court appearance. That means no visiting the First Appearance Crowns. You can talk to the prosecutor in court though.

One thing that you could try is asking if they'll let you plead to speeding instead, hopefully at 50 kph and not more - that way you'll only get a 4 demerit ticket and just pay it without having to explain why you shouldn't be suspended to a judge. Speeding at 51 and over is 6 demerits and the judges often give out suspensions for those excessive speeds.

you must have the gts-t confused with your mazda. A gts-t can go well over 200km/h let alone 160...

Don't go in by yourself, hire points and let them take care of this for you. This is probably not something you should handle yourself.

why are you guys helping this street racer? The only proper way to learn is to lose your licence for 3 months or so and have you take the bus.

I hope you have demerits, a fine to pay AND you lose your licence. If your permit was that important you shouldn't have gone those speeds on Deerfoot.

Can you read? I believe it is not a possible option to take the bus! But learn to slow the fuck down dude.

BTW it is actually kinda hard to resist pushing to those speeds in a GTS-T.

Normally I'd agree...

But the OP didn't show any attitude. And obviously he is worried about what's going to happen.

His job depends on his commute.

And as I said he doesn't show any attitude, didn't ask how to get out of it, just asked for advice on how to handle it, and was curious about what the possible punishments may be.

He is obviously worried, and since this is a first offense of any kind for him, and thankfully since nothing happened I think he probably learned his lesson.

Normally I'd be dishin insults, but in this case I think he may have learned his lesson.

I have contacted a traffic ticket specialist for my defense in court, i have read that some of you think i should lose my licence, well your right i do deserve to have it taken away, i have defensive driving scheduled next week, along with a letter i will be writing to the judge and anyone else it concerns explaining my actions and how they would effect everyone if something did happen, so i'm not making any excuses for what i did i'm just hoping i can proove to them that im not some punk kid who deosnt care if he looses his licence i would be pretty screwed out of a good job, i normally do not commit this sort of action it was just one of those times where your not using your head, So long story, yes fine, yes give me demerits, but im asking to spare my licence to better myself.

Those are all good things. I'm glad you admit that what you did wasn't smart. Hopefully, you also realize that it was dangerous.
You could probably negotiate on your own with the prosecutor, but if you want to use a ticket agent, that's fine too.
If you choose to do it on your own, you can call the crown's office before your court date - 2 weeks before or less - and ask to set up a time to speak to the duty crown about your ticket (*Note: this is not the normal procedure - you can only do this if you are actually scheduled into a court room, not scheduled for the JP counter). You could then come in and show him proof of completing defensive driving, also bring a letter from your employer about losing your job. I'm not saying for sure that he'll reduce your ticket at that meeting, but you will at least have everything you need to show him to let him make that decision.
Let us know how things turn out.

Dude.. you got my support now. You're actually doing stuff to mitigate your actions, and that speaks a ton louder than any words. I'm normally all for the "lose the license crush the car", but I also believe that a guy should have a shot at a second chance too. Sounds to me like you're earning your second chance.

...and if this guy had wrapped himself around a light standard, killed himself, possibly someone else (which has happend before at those speeds), we'd all be calling him a douchebag. The fact that he's alive to be remorseful is nothing more than luck.

Quoted for humor. Your saying you have never, once in your life, reached that speed on a public road? It isn't like i try to race kids and see how fast my car is, but driving to Saskatchewan or on any other two lane road, passing can get a bit sketchy with people coming head on. Hitting 160 isn't really hard.... and its not like the moment you hit it your automatically lucky to have survived. I'm not condoning speeding, but realistically it isn't all that terrible.

If I'm on a nice stretch of road that's straight, good visibility, no traffic around, I might slowly cruise up to that speed, but I won't sustain it, because I know the road is not engineered for those speeds.
Doing that speed on an empty road that's nice and straight is not the issue here...the OP was RACING. Although I've never raced, I can imagine the adrenaline gets pumpin' and maybe it's like being intoxicated, and bad decisions get made.
